In Today's video we explore Canada's hippie capital of nelson, BC where we discover from the locals that one of the towns hotels has a haunted past.
The Hume Hotel. Yeah, actually haunted.
And one of these glasses went flying from here and smashed on the amp.
Fred Hume, on the wall there.
Is that him?
That's him.
When I woke up this morning I did not think I'd be ghost hunting.
There's documented evidence of weird things happening.
We're Lloyd and Mandy, a Canadian-Nazi couple that spent the last 18 months
traveling as digital nomads through Southeast Asia and Mexico.
Now we're in North America having a crack at full-time RV life.
Today we're heading to the city of Nelson,
located in the West Kootenays in British Columbia, Canada.
Nelson is perhaps best known for its ski resorts and thriving food culture.
It was also voted the best ski town in North America in 2012.
But we're here to see what else this quiet mountain town has to offer.
Gull Pit Rock.
It's pretty intense as you can hear I'm probably,
you can probably hear I'm out of breath at the moment.
We haven't done much like, like mountain hiking ever.
Really, I did as a kid but not recently.
So this is pretty good.
A good way to start the day.
That was a lot harder than I thought it would be.
Yeah, I'm so out of breath.
I was gonna run this morning and then we decided to go for a hike.
I was worried I wouldn't get the same exercise but this is way more.
I'm gonna be sore.
Look at the view.
Seriously, you can see the whole town.
It's so beautiful.
It's pretty epic.
It makes the town look a lot bigger than I thought.
It's a city, right?
Yeah.
Look how happy Bear is.
This is exactly what Bear should be doing.
Oh, there's a seat over there.
Should we go sit there?
Yeah.
Now the trek down.
Going the easy way.
We did it.
We made it back down.
Down was a lot quicker.
That probably took about 15 minutes not even on the way down.
Probably 45 up.
Yeah.
So all up about an hour, hour and 15 or something like that.
Come on, sweetie.
Hop in.
Oh, it smells so good in here.
here in Nelson.
It's only available from 11 30 until 2 30, I think.
And only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I think it'll be a really good way for us to see the city.
It's really cute and it runs right along the waterfront.
Absolutely beautiful.
So we're going to hop on that before we head to this really cool diner for lunch.
It's like a kiddie train, isn't it?
No, I've only seen adults on it.
And then let's get lunch.
I'm hungry.
Yeah.
So keen for the diner.
It looks so good.
So the train's late.
My train.
Maybe it's not even coming.
Yeah, I'm a bit nervous that we're here at the wrong time.
Something tells me the website might not get updated all the time.
I think we'll give it maybe 15 minutes before we call it and then we just go to lunch.
It's been 15 minutes.
Do we call it?
I'm so disappointed.
I wanted to go on it so bad.
We've only seen it once since we've been here.
Yeah, so we know it does exist, but I just haven't seen it since then.
And we've been down here a lot.
Was it the weekend?
What day did we get here on?
We got here Friday.
I saw it like the second we got here.
We got here Friday.
Yeah.
So it wasn't a weekend.
It wasn't a Tuesday or Thursday.
And it wasn't Tuesday or Thursday.
Maybe it's not running Tuesday, Thursdays.
Can you look it up again?
It says here, streetcar number 23 is a seasonal attraction that typically operates from May
long weekend until Thanksgiving, depending on weather and refit schedules, from Easter
to mid June and from Labor Day to close of season.
So Easter to mid June.
That's now.
I'm actually so bummed.
We've decided to call it, but I've been looking forward to this train ride since we got here,
but we'll have to try again once they figure out when it actually comes.
We're going to head to the diner though, so I'm not too sad.
Thanks.
I'm thinking a Reuben maybe.
Oh, Reuben would be sick.
Do you think?
Hash brown poutine, baby or shredded potatoes with cheesecake smothered in gravy.
Amanda's breakfast.
That's you, Amanda.
What's not?
Yeah.
So one of the things I found out about Nelson is it has more restaurants per person per
capita than New York City.
That's crazy.
There's so many restaurants in New York, but there is a lot here.
Obviously, we won't get to that many of them, but we'll try and get to a couple today.
Thank you.
Oh, wow.
That's awesome.
Absolutely.
There's an extra plate if you want it.
Do you want cutlery or ketchup or hot sauce or anything?
Hot sauce would be great.
Do you want Frank's or outdoor Tabasco?
Frank's, please.
Do you have Wi-Fi?
Do you have any channel?
We do have Wi-Fi.
Thank you.
So around here, the Hume Hotel.
Yeah.
Potentially haunted, yeah.
Yeah.
There's a whole documentary that you can find, but essentially, Mr. Hume, who started that
hotel, he died mysteriously and it's said that his spirit haunts that place.
Really?
There's documented evidence of weird things happening in there, you know, people have
seen him walking around at night and there's, you know, glasses go flying off the bar every
once in a while and it's just bizarre in there.
Weird.
Have you seen anything?
You know, I didn't see much when I went in there, but there was one time.
Yeah.
I walked in there and I was like, you know, I was just grabbing some nachos.
Not sure exactly how to describe it, but I saw this guy standing behind the bartender
for like three seconds.
Just like, you know, if you're just arriving, you kind of see someone peeking around, you
know, that kind of thing.
Yeah.
And I didn't know who that guy was.
I wasn't entirely sure if I saw it, but for a moment, it seemed like there was a guy peeking
behind that guy's head.
So it was Mr. Hume.
It was spooky.
Mr. Hume.
Wow.
Or maybe it was just me.
Yeah.
That's where you find some of the best weekend guests.
Okay.
Yeah, we are.
Cool.
Thank you so much.
Can you do it?
Do I have to do it at the same time?
It's really hard to do both at the same time.
Go for it though.
There you go.
Okay, go.
Well, you gotta get more of an up angle there.
Yeah, there you go.
You're getting it.
Thanks, Liam.
Better address that.
I just went in for a handshake and he started snapping his finger.
It turned into like a secret handshake and I didn't know it.
So Liam, the waiter, was telling us that this place has been open since 1937.
A lot of Nelson is just really old buildings and architecture and
nothing's really changed, it doesn't seem like in like the last century.
It's pretty damn good, isn't it?
Something about a deli sandwich...
Diner sandwich is just so good.
Okay, guys, before we go any further, we're just going to take a quick second
to give a shout out to Surfshark for making today's free content possible.
In case you've never heard of Surfshark and you don't know what it is they do,
they provide us with our own VPN while we're traveling.
And we've been using them since all the way back in Southeast Asia a year ago.
And if you don't know what VPN stands for, it's Virtual Private Network.
Having a VPN keeps us safe while we're using
Wi-Fi on the road or we've got our computers with us in hotels and Airbnbs.
And it basically is like a mask and it stops anybody from
seeing all of our data on our computers.
So when your phone or laptop is connected to the internet,
all of your information is encrypted.
But aside from providing us with extra security on the road,
Surfshark also makes it possible for us to access things like Netflix
or Amazon Prime as if we were back in our home country.
I'm actually right now watching the NBA playoffs
and I wouldn't be able to do that unless I had a Virtual Private Network
because they have blackouts all over Canada and North America.
So basically when you're using the Surfshark VPN,
you can choose which country server you want to connect to.
And not only that, you can connect an unlimited amount of devices
using just one Surfshark account.
And on top of all of that, if you sign up today using the link down below
and type in code LLOYDANDMANDY at checkout,
you will get an exclusive Surfshark deal of an extra three months for absolutely free.
So click the link down below in the description.
Don't forget to use code LLOYDANDMANDY and you'll get three months free.
There's a 30-day money-back guarantee.
So what do you got to lose?
All right, back to the video.
Thanks, man.
Bye, Liam.
Thank you.
Wow, I am happy we stopped in at that diner.
Met some subscribers, which was awesome.
And Liam gave us a little rundown on what Nelson's all about.
Maybe gave us a suggestion on another place to go to around here
that's a little weird and different.
I love Nelson.
Hey, there.
Did you have a nap?
Hello.
All right, after what Liam told us about the Hume Hotel being haunted, possibly,
we're really interested to investigate a little bit more.
So we might head there now.
Let's find out for ourselves if it's actually haunted.
I'm a little nervous.
What are your thoughts on Nelson?
I love it.
And right now, the street that we're on just smells like incense and yummy food.
It's awesome.
We just walked like three blocks, and there's definitely a lot of restaurants
and bars and cafes here.
We probably went past about 20 in three blocks.
I'm not really too sure how they can have so many in such a small town.
It doesn't seem like it's that busy.
But maybe there's more people here than what we think.
We'll get two of the Valhalla.
I just have a question for you.
We're just visiting, and we're talking to a server in the diner.
And he told us that this place is apparently haunted.
Is that true?
100%.
Absolutely.
Really?
Yeah.
I thought you were going to say you didn't know what I was talking about.
No, no, no.
Oh, no.
No.
Yeah, exactly.
He said he saw somebody in the bar, like a ghost in the bar.
Oh, really?
Yeah, yeah.
I haven't seen that.
But one night I was sitting just over here.
I was off work, and I was having a drink.
And there was no one.
But the closest person was pretty much where Jodi was.
And one of these glasses went flying from here and smashed on the end.
Does everybody know about this or something?
Oh, yeah, everyone's had one.
Have you named it?
But I think some people think there's a couple, I think.
Yeah, and then I heard maybe Lydia or something.
But I don't know.
But then there's this one.
Apparently, there's one room that's particularly haunted.
And it's at 323 or something like that.
Because I guess people, when they used to do the public hangings at the courthouse across
the street, they would go up.
Yeah.
Like in the 1800s, there used to be balconies on all the hotel rooms here.
The hotel used to look like, I think it's on here.
The hotel used to look like that.
So you see that there's all these balconies until they closed them all in.
So I guess they'd sit outside this one room and sit on the balcony and watch the public
hangings.
So I guess that room is particularly haunted.
Oh, my goodness.
I've never stayed in that room, so I don't know.
And then there's been funny stories.
This woman named Jill, she was downstairs in the basement where the housekeeper's kind
of like all the laundry is and all their stuff is.
And off of that, there's a room with lockers, like a change room.
And in that room, there's a door.
And when you open the door, it's just a wall with electrical panel.
Yeah.
Like it's not a room.
You just open it up, and it's a door right there.
There's no room for anybody.
It's really not a bad place.
And she was in there getting changed, and the handle on the side of that door was just
like, ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
Like somebody was on the other side checking out.
Oh, my God.
She like just grabbed her phone and was like, running out broken.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, but nothing bad's ever happened.
Yeah.
You're just hearing little stories.
It's kind of a story.
Someone coming down the stairs, there's no one there, but you can clearly hear someone
going down the stairs.
Yeah.
Well, I think it's confirmed.
I just asked the bartender, and I thought she was going to be like, what are you talking
about?
She told us like three or four stories of people.
Even she herself, she said she was the only one working.
She was closing up, and a glass went flying, and all these other stories.
Apparently, there's one room in the hotel that's particularly haunted because they used
to watch public hangings at the courthouse across the road back in the 1800s.
It's wild.
Man, that's crazy.
We should go to the hotel and see if we can like have a look around.
Yeah.
After this beer, we'll go ask.
Cool.
Hopefully, they know what we're talking about.
Yeah.
Thank you.
When I woke up this morning, I did not think I'd be ghost hunting.
You never know what you're going to end up doing with YouTube.
So fun.
We've tried making a point of getting ourselves out there and speaking to more people, hearing
more about their stories.
It really gets us out of our comfort zone and not so introverted.
So you're going to be seeing probably more of that on our channel, what you're really
excited about.
So far, Nelson has delivered.
Mr. Hume, I guess the person who-
Fred Hume on the wall there.
Is that him?
That's him on video.
Unfortunately, we were unable to film our entire interaction with the hotel staff at
the Hume Hotel.
However, both the front desk clerk and the manager corroborated the stories that we were
told by other witnesses.
They spoke of a specific room that they believe to be the permanent residence of Mr. Hume
that was haunted for many years.
The room is now a connecting hotel room.
I didn't get to see the room because it was actually booked out and renovated, but wild.
Everybody we've asked about it has said the same thing.
Yeah, it's definitely haunted.
They tell the same story about glasses flying off the racks behind the bar and keys falling
out of the little pigeon holes that they belong in and the public hangings that used
to go on here.
So apparently there's a YouTube video already about it called The Haunting of the Hume or
something.
I'll try linking it in the description if you're interested in checking it out.
We're going to watch it probably tonight to get a better idea of what we're talking about.
Yeah, but everybody's said the same thing and I don't know.
Maybe it's just one of those urban myths.
Yeah, everyone hears the same like one story.
The bartender did say she actually literally saw it with her own eyes and so did that server.
Yeah, I believe it.
Yeah, I have talked about them.
These are blizzards.
It's like it's a McFlurry, yeah?
Yeah, very similar.
That's probably what I'll get.
Yeah, I think you would.
I don't know if I've ever had Dairy Queen.
There was one in Whistler, but I haven't got it.
I don't think you have either.
What are you getting?
I'm going to get a blizzard with chocolate chip cookie dough and Smarties.
Or should I just get one flavour?
I don't care.
Score is really good.
What's score?
It's like chocolate toffee, but it's crunchy.
It's crunchy and it's so good.
Ah, I don't think so.
All right, get what you want and order me a Buster Bar.
You got it.
This is yours.
What is this thing?
I don't remember it looking like that.
Here you go.
Okay, thanks.
I'm so busy.
Yeah.
Your first DQ experience.
It looks so good.
I don't know if there are any people coming out on Tuesday afternoon.
It's hot for the first time.
Is it small?
Look how big it is.
I know, it's insane.
Why is it getting so hot?
It's just like a blizzard, hey?
McFlurry?
Yeah.
Yeah, sorry.
I always call McFlurries blizzards, that's why.
It's got like fudge in it and I was going to say white ice cream.
Vanilla ice cream.
It's ricest.
Don't spill it on your watch.
I will.
It's a little bit salty from the peanuts.
It's so good.
It's good?
I remember why I loved it when I was a kid.
I'm dancing.
Oh, they're really retro, how fun.
Okay, so a new thing that we're going to start on our channel
is if a town is somewhere or a city that we really love and we think we want to remember it,
we're going to start putting a sticker of it on our fridge.
So if somewhere earns a spot on the fridge, you know it's good.
And Nelson has now earned a spot on the fridge.
Where should I put it?
Just here?
Good little baby.
All right, we've just arrived back at our RV park that we've been staying at.
We're staying at Cool Waters, which is about five minutes outside of Nelson.
It's been awesome and it's got really good Wi-Fi.
So we've been here for a little while.
Surprisingly good Wi-Fi.
Yeah.
Most RV sites say they have Wi-Fi, they don't.
This one like, I don't know if they got Starlink or what it is, but it's super fast.
But I guess we're going to end the vlog here.
I've had the most incredible experience in Nelson.
The people have been unbelievably helpful and kind and welcoming to us.
Such a different place.
It's a mix between like hippie and country, if that makes sense.
Yeah.
It's got both.
Best of both worlds, I guess.
Learned about so many different places that we probably should visit as well before we
leave this area.
I almost don't want to share it because I feel like too many people might tell me enough, but...
I know, it's pretty special.
Thanks so much for watching, guys.
