A series of intense storms in Spain have caused colossal damage to the country

A series of powerful storms with hail, lightning, heavy rain and strong gusty winds hit Spain. The city of Navarrete in the province of La Rioja was the epicentre and one of the areas hardest hit by the storm. Hail fell with great intensity, with hailstones reaching the size of ping pong balls. Streets turned into rivers due to melted hailstones, and basements in residential areas were flooded. Gusts of wind blew down furniture from outdoor cafes, tree branches and even road signs on some roads. Schools in the region suspended classes due to the effects of the storm.
The agricultural region of Moncalvillo was hard hit, with farmers reporting 100% damage to their vineyards. The storm coincided with predicted outbreaks of powdery mildew, which poses a threat to this year's wine harvest.
Another powerful storm hit the central regions of the country, affecting the cities of Guadalajara, Pozuelo de Alarcón and the capital of Spain, Madrid. The state meteorological agency (Aemet) issued an orange storm alert for the entire community of Madrid. On several roads in the region, such as the M-40, cars were stopped due to the intensity of the hail. According to the 112 service, several dozen drivers reported that the windshields of their cars were smashed by hail.
The General Directorate of Traffic reported that traffic was difficult on the A-5 towards the capital near Alcorcón due to numerous accidents. Likewise, traffic was difficult towards the capital on the A-3 in Rivas and on the A-42 in Torrejón.
The Madrid Security and Emergency Agency 112 (ASEM112) informed city councils and other agencies about the severe weather situation.
