She was born in 1963 in Evanston, Illinois, and grew up in Libertyville, a small town just north of Chicago, close to the Wisconsin border. Shotwell was the middle child of three sisters, with a dad who was a neurosurgeon and a mom who was an artist. Even as a kid, she was always tinkering with machines, fixing things around the house and even fixing her own bike. Cars were her real love though, and at first, she dreamed of working in the automotive industry.
As she grew up, Shotwell was an outstanding student at Libertyville High School, always earning A’s. Many assumed her passion for space and rockets was born early, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, she didn’t have much interest in space as a kid. She even watched the Apollo 11 launch in 1969 on TV and thought it was “boring.”
