Well, it's called the corpse flower, and
it's drawing in some attention at a
local botanical garden. The fowl
smelling flower on the campus of Smith
College in Northampton is said to be a
sight to behold. 22 News reporter Aretta
Oda is live in studio to tell us more
about a flower that's like no other.
This flower is part of the aeroid
family, but is popularly known as the
corpse flower. Originating from
Sumantra, Indonesia, these flowers can
reach a height of up to 15 feet tall.
Big guy. Uh so this is the largest
freestanding flower in the world. Um
when it comes into flower and what we're
looking at is the flowering phase of the
life cycle of this plant.
As for the unique name, it comes from
the rotting flesh smell once the flower
is set to bloom. and flies are his
pollinators. Jimmy tells me that it
isn't easy to take care of these flowers
due to the irregular life cycle. This
flower will begin to smell like a corpse
as early as next week. And you're able
to visit the botanic garden of Smith
College to learn more. Now, don't worry.
I didn't catch a whiff of the flower,
but when it blooms next week, I'm sure
it'll be a very different story. working
for you. Area Odia, 22 News.
