Puffin on a cigar in his khaki perfectly ironed uniform
He is wet from wading ashore
He talks about hearing machine gun fire in the background
As photographs are snapped of him
He was up there trying to ramrod all the officers
To get these guys out of here
Get your men moving, get them out of here
Patton knows he'll need more than riflemen and field artillery
To stop the Tigers
Patton yells at a Navy communications officer
If you can get the goddamn Navy to start firing
We can stop this offensive
Minutes, cruiser Boise and her sisters of steel and iron
Hammer out a barrage of naval gun fire
Those ships were going back and forth up that hill
Sounded like a freight train coming over
I mean, they were accurate
It didn't take too many of those things blowing wide open
That they turned and found some place else to go
A Tiger tank in Sicily was an awesome sight on the battlefield
However, against a big naval gun
A Tiger tank is a slow-moving target
While the German tank columns are devastated
By the withering fire of Navy six-inch guns
Patton puts himself into the line of fire
He personally directs mortar fire on German troops
In a ravine outside of Jaila
The mortar men drop incendiary rounds of white phosphorus
On infantrymen and tanks
White phosphorus, when it explodes
If it touches you, it will burn right through you
It is absolutely demoralizing
To be in a situation where it is raining fire on you
Patton later wrote in his journal
The white phosphorus was remarkable in its effect
And seemed to make them quite crazy
As they rushed out of their ravine
Shrilling like dervishes with their hands over their heads
The enemy, both Italian and German
Are terrified of white phosphorus
And I personally do not blame them
Patton's 7th Army has turned the tide of battle at Jaila
The enemy counterattack has been destroyed
The beachhead has held
General Patton celebrates with hard-fighting generals Allen
And Teddy Roosevelt Jr.
Whose 1st Infantry Division
Faced the worst of the German assault
He recognized that this was a pretty serious fight
That Allen had had
And that Allen had done pretty well
Given the circumstances
And Patton goes back
And he writes in his diary
I think I've earned my pay today
But even as Patton and his commanders
Breathe a sigh of relief at Jaila
Disaster has struck
