Er grenzt an die Kantone Zürich, St. Gallen und Schwyz. Am westlichen Ende liegt die Stadt Zürich – die größte Stadt der Schweiz.
Ursprünglich diente der See vor allem als Verkehrs- und Transportweg, heute ist er ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel mit attraktiven Wohnlagen an seinen Ufern. Eine Schiffsrundfahrt bietet die Gelegenheit, die Region entspannt zu erkunden: Sanfter Wellengang, Ruhe und kulinarische Genüsse machen den Ausflug besonders reizvoll.
