The Summit is a feature length documentary that examines the most basic aspects of human nature placed at the mercy of Mother nature.
K2 is absolutely the king.
It's glaciers.
It's black mountains.
Everything is raw.
It fills you with respect.
The Summit is the new documentary by Nick Ryan
about the deadliest event in modern mountain climbing history.
Featuring National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year Pemba Gyalja-Sherpa,
a climbing expert who saw the horrific events unfold that day.
If you make one step wrong,
Nick, Pemba, thank you for joining me to talk about the Summit.
Tell me about the deadliest day on K2.
24 people went up.
11 didn't come down.
Pemba, I can't imagine what that must have been like.
How does it feel now to have a film being made about that experience?
Yeah, for me, you know, this Summit documentary is
one of the truthful sources to understand
what happens on the mountain exactly in 2008.
K2, it's a completely different ballgame from Everest.
It is a very serious mountain.
He was plucked from the mountain K2 after an avalanche left at least 11 others.
The mountains of Pakistan were the last survivor of an ill-fated expedition.
Do you think that the events that day were sort of misinterpreted by the media
and that you were trying to clear it all up?
Yeah, exactly, yeah.
Not just the media, but just what was reported on
and then there was also the public reaction to it.
They're like, you know, they shouldn't be doing this.
They shouldn't be doing that.
Even, you know, well-known climbers had rode in on the argument
saying that the climbers on K2, that they, you know,
they shouldn't have been there.
They know, you know, no business been there, basically.
People think that we're mad.
How can you continue if someone died?
But if you drive a car, you see people crash.
You see people die in traffic.
You keep on driving because you think it's not going to happen to you.
There's so many reasons people would say to turn around,
to just get off the mountain.
What is that drive that makes you want to keep on going to the summit?
So there's this thing that if you don't succeed the first time,
you're going to go back again until you beat it.
Abba and the NOAA team were on the 1967 days at that point
and the weather's perfect.
You're six hours from your goal.
Would you turn around?
We were the first expedition on the mountain.
Everything was really organized.
We're talking a day in a million.
There wasn't a day like this that I can remember.
You know, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
I think the end result is like a horror film, you know,
but that's just because it is so horrific.
There is a struggle in every breath.
We're hanging on every word to get some kind of clue.
There will be things we never will know.
The bigger the dreams, the bigger the risks.
To say that somebody made a mistake when you weren't there,
you don't know.
Only the mountain knows.
