안녕하세요, hello everyone and welcome to Let's Speak Korean.
I'm your host Lisa Kelley and are you ready for today's lesson?
First we'll have to meet Stephen Revere, he's our wonderful guide to the Korean language.
Hello Stephen
Hello everybody,
Thank you for being with us again today.
Today you're going to learn a little bit about how to say what you like, what you enjoy.
And you're also going to learn how to use the word but, b-u-t, that's one t, and how
to talk about things that you don't like as well.
Okay, and we also have Miriam and Jason in the studio, they're our students for today.
Hello
And you know what, I feel a little bit hungry.
Hungry?
Well, you know, it just happens to be, me and Stephen love eating and he is actually
like a total food buff.
He knows all the great places and all the good things to eat in Korea, right?
So what's the flavor for the month?
My new place that I just found is a, it's actually a 빈대떡 restaurant, specialty
I think you were telling me about this.
Yes, I told you.
It's a specialty place right in front of 홍대, in the area, 홍대 area where I live, and
they have the best 파전, wonderful, and they have three different kinds.
You can get the meat, 고기, or you can get the 김치, of course 김치, there's always
a 김치 flavor, right?
I love the 김치파전.
And then you can also get the seafood as well, just.
And you know, you can't leave out 막걸리 or 동동주 when you talk about 파전, that's
just, you know, excellent.
That's right.
They're great for those rainy days, so check it out next time it's raining.
And speaking of food, let's go over to our Let's Do It and find out what we're learning
today.
Okay, well, as you heard in the clip, we were talking about 김치, and if you've been living
in Korea or you know anything about Korea, we can't leave out 김치 when we're talking
about Korea, right?
Yes.
김치 goes into every single thing.
You've got your 김치 burgers, you've got your 김치 pizza, you've got your, 김치
can find its way into just about any, 김치만두, of course, is one of my favorites.
One of my new findings is the 김치 스파게티, and that's actually pretty good.
I mean, I can't have a meal without 김치 these days.
Pretty good stuff there.
Yes.
Now, what if you think 김치 is a little bit spicy?
It's okay, but it's a little bit spicy.
You would say, your response,
맛 is taste, okay?
있어요 is to exist, to be there, so 맛 있어요, 맛이 있어요, 맛있어요.
When it all blends together,
And then in front, 맵다 is spicy, you take the 맵, to be spicy, you take the 맵 part,
맵, and then you put 지만 after it, 맵지만 맛있어요.
Right.
And one thing to remember when you're using 지만 is that you have to have one positive
and one negative.
So, for example, you're saying something is good, but, 지만, although, or meanwhile,
and then you have to put a negative behind it, or vice versa.
Also, remember that you can use it either way.
It can be positive, then negative, or negative, then positive.
So, having said this, I want you guys to make a sentence for me, okay?
You were saying the first phrase positive, and then the next phrase negative, so...
Right, or vice versa.
What about this?
Good.
I said it right.
I say this all the time when I'm shopping.
Oh, I like it, but it's too expensive for me.
Right.
And you can reverse that, too.
Same thing.
Right?
You're just kind of switching it around, you're putting the emphasis on the opposite
side.
Right.
Do you want to try one out, Jason?
Sure.
How about, 착하지만 예뻐요.
Okay.
I want to say he's talking about me, but the sentence is wrong.
Okay.
I was saying one negative and one positive.
착하다 is to be nice, and 예쁘다 is pretty.
So you can't say she's nice, but she's pretty.
You have to have one positive and one negative.
So do you want to fix that and try something else?
How about...
He's such a nice guy, he can't say anything bad, you know?
How about 착하지만 공부 못해요.
We like a studious girl.
He's talking about you!
I said she's nice, or she's well-mannered, but 공부, she studies, 못해요.
She doesn't study well.
Or she's...
Can't study.
Lisa!
Okay.
All right.
Well, let's throw out some questions out there.
Stephen, how about something like, do you like hiking?
등산 is hiking.
We're going to give you some real questions, and you're going to try and give us some real
answers.
But throw in 지만.
So we've got
등산을 좋아하지만, although I like hiking, 힘들어요.
It's too difficult, or it's too draining.
How about Jason?
Are you ready?
Are you ready, Jason?
I'm ready.
Okay.
We're going to go with 라면.
You know 라면?
Definitely.
I eat it all the time.
In English we usually say ramen, don't we?
Okay.
라면은 좀 맛있지만, it's pretty good, but 하지만 좀 매워요.
It's a little bit spicy.
It's pretty good.
And this is the perfect chance to go into our irregular verb of the day.
It's a 비읍 verb.
맵다, right?
Ends in a 비읍.
It's an irregular verb.
So what happens is that 비읍 gets dropped, and you end up putting in an 우 instead.
Smashed together becomes
And then, let me give you another example.
어렵다 means to be difficult.
That ends in a 비읍.
When you conjugate it, that 비읍 will be dropped, and it will become an 우.
Then it will get smashed together again.
It's not that hard.
Let's go into our main expression, which is blank
I really like something.
Let's fill in the blank.
How about 불고기?
All the foreigners love
We're here at Let's Speak Korean.
We all love the Korean language.
And if you don't mind making one up for me, go ahead.
What do you like?
I like exercising.
Jason, I bought coffee for you before the program.
Who do you like?
Yes, the coffee comes through.
Well, I guess that's about it for our lesson.
Let's go and take a look at Wrap It Up and see what we've learned for today.
Okay, today we learned how to ask if you like something and to respond by answering negative and positive.
Okay, let's review it one last time.
Do you like 김치?
Yes, I like it, although it is a little bit spicy.
Alright, well thank you again for joining us and please join us next time on Let's Speak Korean.
Bye-bye.
