Today we are giving a full walk through of our DIY home build in the mountains of North Idaho. We build this house with no experience, and now that it's completely dried in we wanted to show you around before we tackle the interior! We are a family of 6 currently building our dream home our 20 acre homestead in North Idaho. We garden, raise rabbits, chickens, sheep, horses, homeschool, and do just about everything that we can ourselves to achieve a self sufficient and debt free life for our family.
As builders of our new house, we have been living with our grandfather in a tiny house that we built ourselves.
Six of us, six hundred square feet of pure luxury.
So, when we finished the tiny house about a year ago, we did a complete tour of our white plan here.
But what we have not done is a complete tour of the distribution of our new house for you.
Yes, so we thought that for today's video, we will take you back to the main house, which is still under construction,
and we will give you a general idea of the distribution and we will talk about some of our future plans or what we would like to do with the house.
Yes, but before we do that, I'm going to go get a drink.
Sounds good, we'll see you outside.
Very well.
Here.
This way.
I'm going to go make a drink outside. I want to make a drink at my home.
Energy drinks for the morning.
I would have taken three or four cups of energy drinks, which is too much.
But as the days got shorter and our training programs became more and more intense, we tried to make it snow.
I discovered Athletic Greens, and I'm really excited about this supplement because I think it will really help me simplify my health routine.
Athletic Greens is a daily supplement that contains 35 different ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, superfoods, and probiotics for digestion.
I would love to have to look for a lot of different vitamins to take because each one has the perfect combination of essential minerals and fatty acids to increase my energy levels and maintain the jumps I make all day.
The best thing about each one is how practical it is.
Just a spoonful or a packet of garlic, eight ounces of water, shake it up, and you're ready.
Here we go.
I love Athletic Greens. It's my game.
Our community and every year I've been using it for this.
It's a travel pack.
It's the first one we're getting.
Now, I'm going to head out to meet Jeremy.
Welcome in.
You just need to get out of your car across.
It's a lot better.
Oh, yes.
I see.
It's totally fixed.
Totally fixed.
Wow.
Nice.
That's great.
Before we jump into this whole series, we thought we'd give you guys a little quick update on the S-Dial and the Serchas we were dealing with here.
We talked about it in our last video.
We had a big problem with the Sercha's 2x4 central.
It was actually facing outwards and pushing our exterior metal sheet.
So we had one of the workers from the manufacturing team of the Sercha company come by this morning and kind of get things sorted out.
He was able to get through this part, but he was able to pull the S2x4 inwards, where it belongs.
And then he just had to take it off.
So, I don't know where the S2x4 is.
It should be all right.
It's in the way out.
Now, it's clean and flat.
We can put the equipment in there.
It shouldn't be a problem.
Another quick update for you guys.
In fact, we've got almost all of our heating systems installed all over the house.
All of the ducts are installed.
All of the ventilation of our stove.
All of the ventilation grids in the bathroom.
All of that has been installed all over the house.
Which is great.
Unfortunately, the oven itself and the heat pump unit are still waiting to be delivered.
So, it's going to take a couple more weeks until we have them installed.
And after that, we're going to have the kitchen.
So, this is where it starts.
Welcome to the kitchen, everyone.
To start with a little tour of the house, we're going to start with the basics.
We're building a 2,000 square feet house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms here in the north of Idaho.
Here in the north of Idaho.
As you can see, we're starting here.
This is what we call the big living room.
Well, we like a very open plan.
We like to have this big open space specifically to receive guests, spend time with family, and things like that.
So, inside the big living room, half of it is basically like a living room.
The other half will be Melissa's dream kitchen.
So, for the living room, we're planning on having a big, comfortable sofa where we can all sleep.
We're a large family, and there are six of us.
So, basically, this will be the main area here.
Melissa insisted on having a plug assigned to her.
Specifically for her Christmas carol.
Mm-hmm.
So, this window set up just says, I need a big, big Christmas garland.
Oh, God.
So, the outlet is totally necessary.
I would like a needle.
What do we have?
This will be a heat pump unit, which will be great because we'll be able to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Despite that, we'll also install a wood stove here in the house.
Melissa and I love the heat. We like the wood heating.
It's something we've had for a long time, and in terms of the environment, it's what really helps in a house.
Well, that heating, sorry, that wood stove, we're going to put it here, in the corner of the living room.
That's what we're thinking.
We still don't know exactly how it will look.
This front wall of the house was a real headache for us to build it.
I made several mistakes when making all the frames.
The two-water windows, if you see that video, were also a little difficult to install.
Like this three-door sliding unit that we have here.
It's a lot of weight.
It was very difficult to drive, but I'm very happy to have it.
We've always wanted one at home, and our property and situation here were very good.
We wanted to bring the exterior to the interior, bring the interior to the exterior, and make it a fluid transition.
It's something beautiful to be able to sit on our sofa and enjoy our beautiful views of the mountain.
So, for the front wall, I didn't want to use just traditional beauty panels.
We've been talking about a very fun idea for it, but we're not going to tell you exactly what it is,
because first, I'm not sure it's going to work.
Second, it's a surprise.
Yes, can we achieve it?
I think so, and I think it would be great if we did.
Yeah, we're not going to be using a whole bunch of very traditional materials.
We're going to sit here, and we're going to come around.
We want it to sit like this, at least.
So, we're going to come around.
We're going to come around to the front, and we're going to sit on the wall.
As Melissa said, we're going to have a special surprise on the front wall.
And as for the floor, we still don't know exactly what we're going to do.
No, we're still figuring around.
I mean, look at this.
But what we really wanted to have in the whole house is a feeling of being outdoors.
So, it was the wide view zone.
Correct.
When we first came to the house, we knew we were going to have a completely open space.
So, there will be someone in the kitchen cooking or eating.
You can talk and see the people who are in the living room.
So, we decided to divide the two rooms so that they are two separate spaces,
but still open, leaving a large table.
And then, we'll have the big kitchen sink here.
We're excited about the materials.
I want a big copper sink.
Jeremy wants black.
So, we'll see who comes in.
But it will be a big kitchen sink and a single sink.
And our front sink.
So, a lot of people were worried that now while I was working on the sink,
I wouldn't be able to see the view.
Our sink will be facing outwards, which is incredible.
So, I can be here doing my things in the sink.
I don't plan to spend a lot of time in the sink because I really want to use my sink.
I haven't used my sink in two years.
I'm not doing the dishes by hand.
But when I'm in the sink, I can see outside and see my family.
So, for the distribution of the kitchen, we will have our refrigerator here.
We're going to put a standard two-door refrigerator,
a small oven, and a propane stove.
Another question was, why don't you use natural gas for the kitchen?
That is not an option.
We live very far away.
Natural gas doesn't exist here.
I do a lot of conservation, especially when it comes to meat and vegetables.
So, having a natural gas option is very important.
So, I hope to have a propane stove with six or eight burners.
Double doors would be a dream.
And then, we're going to ventilate all of that through an extractor bell.
I know that you can make extractor bells per hour,
but I would love to have a kitchen extractor bell.
I've always wanted to have one.
It makes me feel like I'm cooking in detail or something like that when I make spaghetti.
So then, past the stove is the sink.
I'm so, so excited to be going home and having this much counter.
It's going to be my first time having this much counter.
I'm really excited to have all of this space.
I don't even know what I'm going to do with it.
Yeah, it's going to be a big wraparound countertop.
I mean, at the very end here, over by, what is the doorway to our master bedroom,
we're going to have a little organization set up, right?
Yeah.
So, the counter will probably go up to about here,
and then just under the sink as well.
And then here, it's going to go down to the level of the desk.
So, if I'm editing or working on a video or whatever I'm doing on the computer,
I'm still part of the habitable space, which is very important.
That's what we want.
We didn't want someone to lock themselves in an office and stop being part of the family.
So, right now, I'm doing all my editing on the couch.
So, it's going to be great to have this little station where I'm still part of what's going on,
but I still have to be distracted by the television.
And my favorite part of the entire kitchen is my pantry.
I've always had a little cabinet,
so I decided I was going to make a whole room to store food.
On this side of the pantry,
we're going to make a shelf with storage space below and two shelves above.
And then we also want to put a big horizontal freezer here to put more storage space.
And this whole side of the pantry will be for shelves.
I store a lot of food containers a year.
The reason why we didn't put windows in the entire pantry
is because we don't want the sunlight to get to the food containers.
So, this pantry has to stay at a cool temperature and it also has to be completely dark.
What do you think to yourself that this is a big pantry?
Which is true.
It is not?
I don't think so.
I think it is.
It's a lot of space.
At the far end of the pantry,
we're going to build another wall that serves as a division between what will basically be a service space.
We have our fresh air return here,
at the farthest end of what will be the sink.
And next to it, we are planning to make a water heater.
Therefore, it will be hidden,
as hidden in the deepest part of the house,
and we will not have to worry about it,
but it will remain accessible so that we can do some work when necessary.
Welcome to the main laboratory or main wing,
as we always like to call it as a joke.
The layout of our house is quite simple.
In the center we have that big room we talked about.
This extreme is, obviously, the main wing.
The opposite side of the house is for the children with their bedroom.
That's why we always call it, we refer to that bed as the children's wing.
For the main room, we plan to place our bed on that wall in the background.
That will allow us to wake up every day and contemplate the beautiful views that we are lucky to have here on our property.
On that side of our bedroom, you can see that we have this beautiful window that lets in a lot of natural light.
In reality, it is facing south.
Therefore, not only do we receive that natural light,
but we can also look out of our path.
We are big gardeners, so it is always nice to take a look and see how the vegetables are doing.
A very simple room.
We are not very busy people.
We don't like crowded rooms.
So it will be a fairly basic configuration.
And after that, we can go ahead and check the dresser.
Yes, the dresser.
Yes, it is a unique feature.
Many people know what dressers are,
but the reason why we call them dressers is because you can not only enter,
but you can go through it and go to the bathroom.
It was a nice configuration, but that's what we liked.
Another question that came up about this part of the house in particular,
is why are there no more windows?
Well, we planned to use a closet to dress and undress every day.
We didn't want people, or even the possibility that anyone would approach and not even feel uncomfortable.
It's a little weird.
You're right.
You have a lot of horses.
Yes, the last thing I need is to see Alexis and Dakota out there looking at the wall without getting dressed.
Nobody wants to see that.
Melissa, also in the corner of our dresser is our access track to the dresser.
And over time, here in the near future,
we will also have to frame a small trapezoid on the ceiling that allows us to access our attic.
We can ventilate everything and isolate it.
So now, while I walk through our dresser,
we will do a live demonstration of the walkthrough.
Yes.
We will enter the main bathroom.
So, the first little room inside the main bathroom is Jeremy's little bathroom.
Melissa, who promises to be real for this time.
I'm going to say your opinion on all this.
Go ahead.
That has its own little ventilation.
And then, as you come out of the toilet,
we are going to have a fan in here with a mirror.
Originally, we were going to try and get some kind of natural ventilation up here with a fan,
but with the 8-foot high ceilings and the height of the fan and the mirror,
there was no space for it.
So, we just did it in the bathroom.
And then, as we come up here,
we are going to do a large personal shower.
We are going to do it in the bathroom.
And it has shower heads so that we can celebrate family reunions here.
Not family reunions, but family reunions.
What do you mean?
What are we talking about, Melissa?
We all make decisions in the shower.
Is that what we're calling it?
Yes.
We make decisions in the shower.
Anyway, it's a double-headed shower.
We built our own shower inside the mini house,
so we have some experience with
that type of thing.
I'm very excited about this.
We're going to work with the kids,
so it's going to be a lot of fun.
Welcome to what we usually call children's rooms.
We have two daughters.
Our 15-year-old daughter will probably be 16 when we move here,
so she's considering the idea of staying in a tiny house inside the barn.
We'll see what happens.
Anyway, in this room, we have a standard-sized closet.
It will have a couple of sliding doors so you can access it.
Nothing special.
A typical bedroom closet.
On the other end, we're thinking of putting blinds
if we have the two girls in the room.
If not, this will be Kira's room for her alone.
She can look through the glass sliding door,
which may be the best perspective of our views from inside the house.
Interestingly, they have great views.
It gives the focal point of our view of the mountain to perfection.
I don't know how they ended up having the best part of our view,
but they did.
We should change the rooms.
Do you want to live in this little bedroom?
A little later.
I'm not going to move the walls.
We could give Kira the bathroom.
I think she'll like it.
It's done. It's done.
I'm not going to do this again.
So when exiting the girls' room,
we'll go ahead and go to the room next door,
which is our vestibule.
That is good knockers, y'all.
Thank you.
I'm learning a lot.
So, I never had a mother who saw a white lady
that I knew living on a farm,
A garage bill?
Yes.
When we're done with the house,
we're going to put a garage.
I don't know if it's going to be used or not,
but it's probably going to have a living space upstairs.
It's going to be another really great construction,
but we don't have it yet,
and we're not even going to start with it
until the house is nice and clean.
In the meantime,
we're probably going to park our cars there,
and we're going to go through here with the lights,
No problem.
We can access the vestibule,
and then we can access the guest room
or the children's bathroom through this door.
So, on this side,
next to the refrigerator,
there will be the washing machine and the dryer.
Well, it's actually just a walk-in room
that will have a washer, dryer and a sink,
and it will also give us access to the bathroom.
This is our guest room or children's bathroom,
and as I mentioned,
it has access from the vestibule,
but you can also go through the main living room.
They're going to have a washing machine here,
and then a traditional mirror here.
Probably, I don't know if we're going to do it,
but we're just going to have a wardrobe
for all of their towels and things like that.
Toilet,
and then a standard bathroom and shower combination for them.
No double headboards?
No, not a double headboard,
for example,
a shower with tiles,
a shower in the vestibule.
We're just going to keep it simple,
and we also wanted to do a bathroom option
because it's good to have at least one bathroom in the house
to wash the dog
if one of the girls wants to take a bath.
So the last room we actually have here
to show you around the house
is going to be for our boys.
We have two little boys.
They're good boys.
They deserve a nice room
and they love to wash,
but they don't have a glass door like the girls do.
So the girls will have access
through this window of 1.20 x 1.50 meters, right?
They still have a nice view,
it's just not as nice as the girls'.
Apart from that,
it's a pretty standard room.
We'll probably put tiles
on the other end of the room.
And they also have access
to their own standard-sized closet
that will make room for the girls
with a couple of sliding doors.
Pretty simple.
They look great.
I would say that your backwards walking
doesn't look all that bad.
That's true.
Listen, a lot of practice.
A lot of practice, right?
Well, that's the meal plan for our house.
Yes, I hope you enjoyed it.
Now we're going to go to the living room
and show you some of the things
we've been working on.
Once again, we'll talk about
some of our plans for the future.
Once you are past the main entrance,
you will have stairs
that lead from each of the three sliding doors
in the front of our house
to the particular part
that Melissa was talking about.
Now, this particular part
of the patio,
I'm very excited.
The reason being,
I'm hoping to make my life's dream
of buying a house here come true.
We can use it all year,
whether it's summer or winter.
I don't see the time
for that to happen in winter.
We can sit here outside in the snow
or run around the main corridor
if we need to get warm.
I don't see the time.
I can't wait for that time to come.
In the front part of this patio,
we already have some boxes
set up for the lights.
It's very important for us
to have a covered area
because here in the north of Idaho,
it snows a lot,
it's very windy,
it rains a lot.
So having this here
is a whole lot of great news.
We can barbecue,
have fun
and spend time outside
no matter what the weather is like.
We're also going to use
the same mixed product
that we have inside
in the large part of the living room.
We plan to extend it
to the end
and place it in the lower part
of the front
just to keep it coherent
and give that feeling
of bringing the exterior
to the interior
and the interior to the exterior.
As I mentioned before,
once we're done
with our home build
and we're going to spot
a garage
because it would be
really, really nice
to have a garage here.
I don't know
if we're going to have a garage,
but we're definitely going
to have an open walkway
that leads to the living room.
So we're thinking
that we're going to use
the garage
with a small space
up above
because there are a lot
that don't want to live
up there
which is the effort
because they can have
additional room space.
So that build will be here
with a walkway
in the living room
and then we'll probably
put another walkway
that will lead
to the patio.
So here in the backside
of the house
we're hoping
to tuck away
a propane tank
because I don't know
exactly where it's going
to go
but it's definitely
going to go
in the back of the house
which is the reason
we have everything
set up the way
we do it.
You'll also see
that we have everything
installed and wired
for a heat pump unit.
That's also going
to be installed here
along the back wall
of the house.
Alright, there you go guys.
Hopefully that
is going to give you
a better sense
of how everything
is distributed
and located here
in the house.
We have a lot
of important plans
for the future
for the year
that's coming
more or less
including that garage
that Melissa
mentioned.
We also want to
get a solar installation
on the south side
of our house
at some point
so lots of
important things
to expect.
Yes, lots of
important plans
and a lot of
work ahead
so stay tuned
to see how
everything develops.
See you guys.
