Mozart - Piano Sonata No. 8 in A Minor K. 310 I. Allegro maestoso

Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, K. 310, is one of only two piano sonatas he ever wrote in a minor key. It’s a work steeped in the Sturm und Drang (“storm and stress”) spirit—intense, dramatic, and full of restless energy. From the relentless drive of the triplets to the abrupt dynamic shifts, the first movement surges with emotion and contrast.

Composed in 1778, the sonata was written during a time of deep personal loss—just after the death of Mozart’s mother while they were in Paris. That grief seems to permeate the music, surfacing in its turbulent moods and urgent, impassioned voice.

Though technically demanding, this movement is not just about virtuosity. It requires a performer to shape phrases with expressive nuance, navigate tension and release with control, and bring out the raw emotional honesty that lies at the heart of the music.
