Elon Musk revealed this about 1st Starship Flight 9 Booster REUSE but Exploded After...
Surprising—many of us felt that jolt when Booster 14, the very first Starship booster to fly twice, met its unexpected end. In countless ways, B14’s mission surpassed every expectation. It tackled problems that had tripped up its predecessors and showed real leaps in performance. Yet even with all that progress, it still fell short of a flawless finale.
So what exactly went wrong? Which moments cemented B14’s place in history? And, crucially, how will the triumphs and setbacks of this flight shape the next chapter of the Starship saga?
That’s what we’re unpacking today on Great SpaceX—so let’s get started.

132 days—that’s how long it took between Booster 14’s two flights. In that time, B14 became the first Starship booster to be reused, a historic milestone for SpaceX’s rapid reusability ambitions. It had previously achieved the most successful landing of any Starship booster by utilizing the Mechazilla arms catching method, making its re-flight even more highly anticipated.
But there was more to this mission than just making history with reusability. B14 was assigned a series of challenging test objectives, including active flips, a landing at a higher angle of attack, and even a planned two-engine landing burn. These ambitious tests were likely the reason why the booster was scheduled to land in the ocean, where failure would pose less risk to infrastructure.

Unfortunately, we never got to witness B14 make contact with the water. Just moments before the intended splashdown, something went wrong.
The first signs of trouble appeared at T+00:06:15, when SpaceX initiated the landing burn. This maneuver re-ignites a cluster of 13 middle and inner ring engines to slow the booster for a controlled descent. However, it was immediately clear that one of the middle engines had failed to light.
While one failed engine during a landing burn isn’t necessarily catastrophic—Booster 15 on Flight 8 still managed a successful landing under similar conditions—it does reduce the deceleration efficiency, which is critical during the final descent.
