Following Jayavarman VII's reign in around 1200, the Khmer Empire begins its gradual decline, and by the 15th century the only inhabitants of the once great city of Angkor are the Buddhist monks living in Angkor Wat. Exactly how this transformation happened is disputed, but it was probably a combination of Thai raids, changes in religion and climate, plague, neglect of infrastructure etc.
