Annie's Canyon Hike is a natural hidden gem in Solana Beach, California. Couple a trip through this unique sandstone slot canyon with a visit to the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Nature Center, in nearby Cardiff-by-the-Sea, for an adventurous day out with the kids in North San Diego County.
To access Annie's Canyon, park along North Rios Avenue and take a stroll along the Gemma Parks Interpretive Trail for about a mile, while enjoying views of the San Elijo Lagoon. If you simply want elevated views of the lagoon, head left and follow the path of switchbacks. However, if you’re feeling adventurous - head right and wind through the narrow sandstone slot canyon to access the metal rung ladders that will take you to an overlook with sweeping views of the lagoon.

Once done with the hike, drive a few minutes away to the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Nature Center. This interactive center is free to visit and offers an in-depth look at the ecosystems surrounding the lagoon. Inside, you’ll find exhibits about native wildlife, hands-on nature displays, and panoramic views from the deck. Outside, there are short trails that loop through marshes and upland habitats. Have your kids pick-up a scavenger hunt card from the front desk, explore the center and trails, and complete the tasks to earn a Junior Ranger badge! It’s a great way to get kids engaged with nature while having fun.
