The Little Lakes Valley Trail to Gem Lake hike starts at the Mosquito Flat Trailhead at the end of Rock Creek Road, about 10 miles in from Highway 395 in Bishop, California. The trail starts at an elevation of over 10,000, so it’s a good idea to spend a day or two acclimating, if you’re not used to being in higher altitude. During the 7+-mile hike, you will experience an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. Also during the hike, you’ll lay eyes on some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ve probably ever seen!

This is one of the most popular hikes in Inyo National Forest. Because of this, you’ll want to get there early to secure a parking spot in one of the lots. The parking lot at the trailhead fills quickly, so be sure to arrive early to avoid parking in the smaller second lot, which will add a quarter mile to your hike, each way. Parking along the roadside is prohibited. Something else to note is that Rock Creek Road is open seasonally, due to weather conditions, so if you’re planning to visit in the late fall or winter months, be sure to check road conditions before you head out. Another tip for this hike, besides the obvious – bringing plenty of water... you’ll want to make sure to pack layers. At this elevation, weather can change quickly.

All in all, one of the most spectacular hikes we've done anywhere in the world! Highly highly recommend!
