Brutus, a 900-pound grizzly bear, was brought by Montana Grizzly Encounter to the Washington Sportsmen's Show at the fairgrounds in Puyallup.
So this is Brutus the bear. He is 15 years old. He was just a couple weeks old when we rescued him
and literally was holding him like a baby, feeding him a baby bottle when his eyes opened for the
first time. Brutus is a very laid-back, easy-going, just really sweet personality. We don't refer to
him as tame. He's not tame. He's a wild animal who's very well trained. We treat him like family
but respect him like a bear. Bears born in captivity have no choice but to live in captivity.
They're born with some instincts but all their survival skills are taught to them by their
mothers in the first two to three years. So we try to teach people to stop breeding them in captivity.
Unfortunately, you can go to exotic animal auctions and you can buy them and try to make a pet out of
it. Unfortunately, bears do not make good pets. Their main problem health-wise generally has to do
with teeth. They'll get abscessed teeth, cavities. People can learn to coexist with them. It's 100%
up to people whether they want to or not. You know, it does take some effort on our part
and honestly they truly don't want anything to do with us. But if we're leaving our dog food out,
our cat food, horse food, that's going to attract them. That's going to cause problems. 15% of their
diet is meat. The rest is, you know, grasses, berries, roots. They truly don't want anything
to do with us. And if you follow a few simple rules, you can really avoid any attack from a bear.
Everybody thinks that bears are big bloodthirsty killers. Watch this guy.
Watch him eat these grapes. Tell me how delicate he is. It's like one grape at a time.
This is his personality. He's very, he's just very gentle.
