It was a quiet night, and Little Rabbit Pip and Little Bear Barnaby were settled in their beds.
The stars twinkled gently outside their window.
Little Bear Barnaby was watching the stars and noticed some looked like tiny dots.
“Are all the things in space big, Pip?” Little Bear Barnaby asked sleepily.
“Professor Hoot the Owl told us about some things that are not so big,” Little Rabbit Pip whispered back.
“He talked about space rocks.”
Some of these space rocks are called Asteroids.
Asteroids are smaller than planets.
They are mostly made of rock, or sometimes metal.
Professor Hoot the Owl said many Asteroids live together in a big ring, like a belt, between the planets Mars and Jupiter.
This is called the Asteroid Belt.
There are lots and lots of Asteroids in the Asteroid Belt, some big, some small.
Some Asteroids are just tiny pebbles.
Some are as big as a small town!
Professor Hoot the Owl said Asteroids also orbit the sun, just like planets do, but in their own paths.
Sometimes, an Asteroid might travel outside the Asteroid Belt.
Professor Hoot the Owl said they are usually very far away.
They are just quiet rocks traveling through space.
Thinking about the Asteroids, those gentle space rocks, made the vastness of space feel a little less empty.
It was like there were tiny islands of rock floating in the dark.
Little Rabbit Pip imagined friendly little space beetles riding on the biggest Asteroids.
Little Bear Barnaby felt peaceful knowing these ancient rocks were just quietly doing their journey.
They weren’t scary or fast.
Just slow, steady travelers.
Their cozy room felt grounded and safe.
While the distant Asteroids floated quietly far away.
Little Rabbit Pip closed Little Rabbit Pip’s eyes, picturing the rocky Asteroids in their faraway belt.
Little Bear Barnaby hugged Little Bear Barnaby’s pillow, feeling the quiet stillness of the night.
The soft glow of their night lamp was a warm, steady light, unlike the traveling Asteroids.
Sleepiness settled deep within them.
May your dreams be as peaceful and still as the journey of a distant Asteroid.
Sleep well, little friends.
Goodnight.
