Once upon a time, in a colourful garden full of flowers, fruits and shrubs, there was a
little fly named Sticky. Her tiny body shimmered with blue sparkles under the sun and her transparent
wings glistened like tiny crystals. Sticky was curious, restless and very kind. She always
wanted to help all her friends, even when she was tired or had other plans.
Every morning, Sticky woke up early to the cheerful songs of the birds and the whisper
of leaves swaying in the wind. She would fly out to visit her friends, Clara the ladybug,
Hugsy the bumblebee and Celeste the butterfly. But that day, something different was about
to happen.
Sticky! called Clara as she saw her arriving. I need your help cleaning my little spots.
They're all dusty.
Sticky looked at Clara's red wings, which indeed had yellow pollen dust on them. Nearby,
a bee buzzed around the flowers, spreading even more shiny dust.
Well, okay, said Sticky, even though she had really wanted to go collect pollen with Hugsy.
She picked up a tiny clover leaf and carefully began cleaning each black spot on Clara. As
they worked, a butterfly flew by and dropped rose petals that floated above their heads.
Sticky got distracted for a moment, watching the shapes they made in the air. But Clara
called her again. When they were almost done, Hugsy came flying in fast, his fuzzy body
covered in golden pollen.
Sticky! Sticky! I need your help carrying this pollen to the hive. It's too much for
me, he panted, showing her two big pollen balls stuck to his legs.
Sticky sighed. She was already tired from helping Clara, but she didn't want to say
no.
Of course, Hugsy. Let's go, she replied, even though her little tummy was already growling
with hunger.
She wiped her tiny feet and took flight alongside her friend.
On their way to the hive, they passed through a sunflower field swaying toward the sun.
Sticky marveled at how tall they were, but her wings felt heavier and heavier.
When they reached the hive, Celeste the butterfly flew down, looking very worried, flapping
her big blue wings.
Sticky, I need your help finding my flower necklace. I dropped it in the field, she said,
her voice trembling.
Sticky was exhausted. Her little wings could barely keep moving, but she looked into Celeste's
sad little eyes and couldn't say no.
All right, let's go, she said with a small tired smile.
They flew for hours searching for the necklace among daisies, poppies and violets.
Every flower was a world of its own, and hidden treasures could be under their petals.
Finally they found it tangled among some roots.
Celeste hugged her tightly.
Thank you, Sticky. You're the best friend in the world.
But when Sticky tried to go home, the sun had already set.
The sky was painted orange and purple.
She was so hungry and tired that she barely made it to her leaf bed.
She fell asleep without dinner, hugging a tiny dewdrop like it was a pillow.
The next day, Sticky woke up with aching wings and a buzzing in her head.
When she looked into the dewdrop mirror, she saw her little eyes looked dull and her wings
were wilted.
Why do I feel so bad, she wondered, watching her reflection fade in the drop of water.
Just then, Mrs. Dragonfly appeared, the wisest creature in the garden.
Her long wings shimmered with all the colors of the rainbow, and her eyes sparkled like
emeralds.
Hello, little Sticky, she said in a gentle voice.
I heard you helped everyone yesterday, but tell me, did you help yourself?
Sticky lowered her antenna, confused.
I didn't want my friends to feel sad if I said no, she confessed.
Mrs. Dragonfly smiled and placed a little leg on her shoulder.
Saying no doesn't mean you're a bad friend, Sticky.
It means you're taking care of yourself, too.
If you don't rest or eat, soon you won't be able to help anyone.
Your wings are precious, and they need care.
Sticky looked at her in amazement.
Really?
I can say no, even if they ask for help?
Of course you can, the dragonfly affirmed.
There are times when we must put ourselves first, and that's okay.
Your friends love you for who you are, not just for what you do.
That day, Sticky decided to try something new.
When Clara came asking her to help clean her spots again, Sticky took a deep breath as
a butterfly danced beside her.
I can't today, Clara.
I need to rest my wings, but I can help you tomorrow.
Clara smiled and sat on a leaf.
That's okay, Sticky, rest up, I can wait.
Then Hugsy came, carrying his pollen.
Sticky, can you help me again?
Sticky gently fluttered her wings and perched on a branch.
Hugsy, I can't carry pollen today.
I'm too tired.
Maybe Celeste can help you?
Hugsy nodded, his buzz humming brightly.
Sure, I'll ask her.
Finally, Celeste flew up to Sticky.
Sticky!
I lost my necklace again!
Sticky smiled as she gazed at the pink clouds passing in the sky.
Celeste, today, I need to take care of my wings, but I can go with you tomorrow.
Celeste gave her a big hug, wrapping her in her soft wings.
Thanks for telling me, Sticky.
I can look for it by myself this time.
That day, Sticky rested on a large lotus leaf, ate a delicious drop of honey, and gazed at
the stars beginning to shine.
She flew peacefully through the garden, feeling her wings light and her heart happy.
From then on, Sticky learned that helping is wonderful, but it's also important to
care for yourself, and that saying no every now and then is also a way of showing love
for yourself.
In that colourful garden, Sticky kept being a great friend, but now she was also her own
best friend.
The end.
Sticky the fly discovered that helping others is beautiful, but that it is also very important
to help oneself.
She learned that saying no once in a while did not make her selfish, but brave and wise.
What about you?
Would you dare to say no when you need to take care of yourself?
