Rifts among the growing number of BRICS nations are casting doubt on their plan to dethrone the
dollar as the world's reserve currency. Our Washington correspondent Luiz Adoro Martinez
has on the story. During this week's ministerial meeting of BRICS nations in Brazil, the group
issued a joint declaration calling for a more inclusive and sustainable global governance.
It is not in the interest of Brazil or our BRICS partners to live in a fractured world.
We need to strengthen multilateralism and cooperation as tools to address contemporary
challenges. Under the motto that Brazil adopted for its BRICS presidency,
strengthen global South cooperation for more inclusive and sustainable governance.
BRICS, a multilateral group of nations originally conformed by Brazil,
Russia, India, China and South Africa, added additional members in 2024 and 2025 countries
like Iran and the United Arab Emirates. But the expansion of the multilateral group of nation
has also created drifts ahead of their annual summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this July.
We discussed the role of BRICS in promoting peace, resolving conflicts peacefully and
overcoming global crises. There were clear statements about the need to strengthen the
role of the United Nations, especially highlighting the urgency of reforming the Security Council
in order to make it more representative, legitimate and effective,
particularly with greater participation from Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Member nations like Egypt and Ethiopia reject the group's intentions to reform the United Nations
and expand the Security Council. And countries like Brazil have already said that they see
no possibility that the BRICS single currency could displace the US dollar as world reserve
currency, something that the Chinese Communist Party and Russia have openly promoted.
What I want from this The Hague Summit is it has to be a splash. It has to project
NATO at the world stage, not only being from history the most successful defense alliance ever,
but also going forward. On the other hand, Secretary General of NATO Marco Rutte has
called on the Western alliance to generate a significant impact ahead of their annual
summit in June that will take place in The Hague, Netherlands. We know that North Korea,
China, Iran and Russia are working more and more collectively because happening in Ukraine,
North Korea, China and Iran are actively supporting Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
President Trump has warned BRICS nations that it would face strong tariffs if they conspire to
undermine the US dollar. Countries like Russia and the Chinese Communist Party have now opted
to strengthen bilateral relations with allied nations. The latest example of that is the
Chinese Communist Party hosting the Taliban-led Afghan foreign minister and the foreign minister
of Pakistan this week in Beijing. Reporting from Washington, D.C., Luis Eduardo Martinez, NTD News.
