Well meet the Okapi, part zebra, part deer, but actually the giraffe. Yeah, nature really went
all out on this one. Today we'll explore the mysterious world of the Okapi, an animal so
elusive it was once thought to be a myth. So what exactly is an Okapi? At first glance,
this animal looks like a mix of different creatures. It has a reddish brown body,
zebra-striped legs, and a long neck. But don't be fooled, the Okapi is actually the closest
living relative of the giraffe. That's right, no zebra DNA here. Scientists first discovered it in
1901 and ever since it's been one of the most fascinating and mysterious creatures on earth.
Now let's talk about size. The Okapi stand about five feet tall at the shoulder and can be up to
eight feet in length. Males weigh around 440 to 660 pounds, while females can be even larger.
And check this out, their tongues are so long they can lick their own ears. They can even clean their
eyes. All right, where do these striped wonders live? You won't find them in your local zoo well,
maybe a few because they're native to the dense rainforests of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
They thrive in deep, secluded forests, making them super hard to spot. In fact, they were so
secretive scientists didn't even get a live photo of one in the wild until 2008. If there was an
award for most introverted animal, the Okapi would win hands down. Now, what's on the menu for an
Okapi? These guys are herbivores, which means they're all about that plant life. They munch
on leaves, fruits, fungi, and even charcoal from burned trees. And get this, they have sent glands
on their feet that leave behind a sticky tar-like substance to mark their territory. Basically,
it's like animal graffiti, but way less annoying. Enjoying the video? Please hit that subscribe

threats? Habitat destruction and poaching. With rainforests being cleared for agriculture,
and illegal hunting on the rise, their population is declining fast. Right now,
conservation efforts are in place to protect them, but they need all the help they can get.
The Okapi Wildlife Reserve in the Congo is doing incredible work to keep these animals safe.
So, there you have it, the incredible, mysterious, and totally underrated Okapi.
