Behind the Build: Christmas Treehouse | Treehouse Masters
Hi everybody, Pete Nelson here from Treehouse Masters on Animal Planet, Friday nights at 10.
Look, today we are in the high country of North Carolina and we have just completed
our buddy Mike, who's a carpenter. You know Mike, his treehouse. We all came together and we're
building and we have finished his treehouse. I want to show it to you right now on the count of
three. Are you ready? One, two, three. Huh? Can you believe this? It's always fun to show off
how these things are staying in the tree. And in this case, we're using five beautiful, big,
mature tulip trees. This beautiful tree has two tabs, the standard limb, or SL as we're calling
it, holding up kind of a beam and brace setup. And then we've got these massive, massive glulam
beams. This is going to hold up 550 square feet of joy. This is the entry obviously. And one thing
I'll point out right away is this beautiful bark siding. This is the same bark that's on the very
trees that are holding this up. Now, the inside. I love it. Look at this. We are ready for Christmas.
We've got our Christmas tree fully decorated. We've got stockings hanging by the fireplace.
Right next to us is the kitchen. Look at this kitchen. I mean, full refrigerator. We've got
plates, glasses. We even have Christmas cookies. Look at that. We ate the gingerbread. We had
gingerbread man, but see, last night we did the big reveal as it's called, and we decimated the
poor guy. I think it's a little overkill to have a four-inch thick walnut countertop, but you know,
Mike, he deserves one. Grace and his buddy, the metal fabricator, created a profile of the New
River watershed, and it's to scale. So these mountains actually exist with their elevations
wrapping all the way around the kitchen. That's pretty neat, huh? All right, let's go upstairs.
Here's the bed that Mike actually made. He did a beautiful job. Okay, there's one more spot that I
want to show you. Probably my favorite place in the whole tree house. It's outside. Come on.
Look at this space. Big, open. It can be windy, rainy, snowing. It doesn't matter. You're covered,
right? I mean, this beautiful tulip tree holding things up. Look, bam, bam. This is black locust.
This very tree was growing about 30 feet from here, and we noticed it there. Black locust is
a great material. I mean, it lasts forever and ever, and this was standing dead, so we just
chopped it down. Alex made a beautiful post out of it. I love how we had some friends that were
good siders. They used all this barn wood to create this little pop out for the composting
toilet. Look at that. This is a real deal composting toilet. Gosh, look at this. This whole place. I
mean, this is what it's all about right here. I mean, this is it. The forest. You're up in the
trees with the birds. Hey, thanks for coming out today. Loved touring Mike's Christmas Treehouse
with you. It was really one of those great experiences for us. I mean, he's one of ours.
We got to know some great new craftspeople. Hopefully, some of them will join us on
other builds, and hopefully, you'll tune in to Animal Planet's Treehouse Masters.
Don't forget. Thanks for coming.
