Blue Origin Blue Moon in Big Issue due to NASA Artemis Problem….
Here is Blue Origin's Blue Moon lunar lander, a human landing system for Nasa’s Artemis 5 mission to the Moon.
It has a staggering price tag of up to 7 billion dollars—more than double the cost of SpaceX’s 2.89 billion dollar Starship HLS.
But, it might never even get off the ground.
The potential cancellation of the Artemis program’s core infrastructure has set off a chain reaction, jeopardizing missions from Artemis 4 onward. And that spells serious trouble for Blue Moon’s future.
For Blue Origin, this could be the ultimate setback. Not only have they chipped in ""well north"" of the contract value, but this lunar lander was supposed to be a cornerstone in their long-term vision to compete with SpaceX in space exploration.
Let’s break it all down in today’s Techmap episode!
Blue Origin Blue Moon in Big Issue due to NASA Artemis Problem….
It all began in 2021, when Blue Origin grabbed headlines by launching a high-profile lawsuit against NASA. The root of their frustration is that NASA had decided to award a sole-source contract to SpaceX for developing the lunar lander under the Artemis program, despite initially planning to fund two competing landers.
As a key player in the National Team, Blue Origin protested the decision to the Government Accountability Office. However, the GAO sided with NASA. Refusing to back down, Blue Origin escalated the matter by filing a lawsuit in the US Court of Federal Claims. But in November 2021, the court dismissed the case, effectively giving NASA the green light to move forward with SpaceX.

Let’s be honest: Blue Origin’s failure wasn’t exactly shocking. NASA was working under tight budget constraints, and the agency had to make a cost-effective choice. Blue Origin’s proposal came with a hefty $5.99 billion price tag—significantly higher than what SpaceX offered.
But this wasn’t just about money. SpaceX’s Starship promised something extraordinary: a massive, fully reusable vehicle capable of transporting a substantial payload to the lunar surface. For NASA, that kind of capability, combined with cost-efficiency, was simply too attractive to pass up.
Even more compelling was SpaceX’s momentum. In 2021 alone, the company completed a record-setting 31 launches, delivering everything from military satellites to Starlink components. They landed a rocket for the 100th time and flew a single Falcon 9 booster 11 times, showcasing rapid innovation and reliability. These achievements instilled confidence in their ability to build the even more ambitious Starship and meet NASA’s Artemis 3 schedule.
