In this video, I share a hard truth that only 10% of people will accept - true success requires sacrifice, not balance. Looking at icons like Narayan Murthy, Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, and every successful founder I've known personally, I've observed that none achieved greatness through a balanced 9-to-5 approach. They devoted years, sometimes decades, to their singular obsession, often at great personal cost.
But this isn't about glorifying mindless hustle culture. The real question isn't whether to sacrifice, but what's worth sacrificing for. The most successful people didn't wake up every day thinking about money - they were driven by purpose. That purpose made their struggle meaningful. Don't waste your hours hustling for appearances or money alone. Choose your sacrifice wisely, and make it for something that truly matters to you. Work-life balance might be a myth, but balance for the right purpose can become a beautiful reality.

90% of people won't like this video.
They'll say, what nonsense is this?
But I'm making it for you.
I'm making it for those 10% who can relate to this video.
Who know that a bitter truth is being told in this video.
The truth that I've seen in many successful founders.
I've seen it in many fellow batchmates.
And the truth that I'm well aware of.
The myth of work-life balance.
Try to look at the world carefully.
You can adopt any language of success.
The success that is financial.
The success that is professional.
There are many professional successes
that don't succeed financially.
Let's say the best scientists of the world.
The best doctors of the world.
The best lawyers of the world.
Lawyers actually earn money.
There are many people who succeed professionally
but never get a reputational success.
People don't even know them.
There are so many Nobel laureates
that we get to know about them only when they win.
So, you can adopt any language of success.
You will find one clear common thread.
They didn't live their lives according to work-life balance.
It wasn't like, let's go home at 6.
Let's get up at 9.
Saturday and Sunday have come.
Now we'll chill.
No.
Their lives were very different.
And we know how much imbalance they had in their lives.
Towards some one thing that they were obsessed by,
that they devoted their entire life to
and for a prolonged period of time.
It wasn't just a matter of a few days or weeks.
It wasn't even a matter of a few months.
For years, for decades,
they put their lives behind one thing.
The balance that they couldn't define.
When Narayan Murthy said...
My request is that our youngsters must say,
this is my country.
I want to work for 70 hours a week.
Every Indian should work for 70 hours a week.
He wasn't just saying it.
They have lived their lives.
They spent hours and hours to make Infosys.
They don't go home.
They had no idea when the PTA meeting would be held,
or what the numbers would be.
And I'm not glorifying this.
I'm just telling you the truth.
To reach a certain level,
if you look at every person,
they haven't lived a life of balance.
So let's first understand that
the myth of work-life balance
doesn't exist in success.
Sacrifice exists in success.
Sacrifice.
Sometimes, a huge sacrifice.
A sacrifice that people might think
wasn't worth it.
But that was the only thing that got them to the point.
Look at the athletes.
Look at Tendulkar.
Did he have a normal childhood?
Did he have a normal life?
Did he chill with the kids,
go to parties, go to the movies? No.
He just played cricket.
Look at Leander Pace.
Listen to Roger Federer.
Look at Messi.
Look at anyone.
Everyone has done the same.
Look at the film stars.
I worked with Shah Rukh Khan in Nearby for a brand campaign.
He was working at 3 a.m.
as if it was 12 p.m.
Completely in it.
The entire staff and crew were tired.
They were exhausted.
They had been up for 12 hours.
And that guy was still at it.
Akshay Kumar would have woken up after an hour.
Because he wakes up at 4 a.m.
Because he goes to bed at 8.30 a.m.
And his sacrifice was on a different level.
He said, I'm not going to be part of something
that maybe requires me to be up
at 9.30, 10, 11.30 in the night.
I made that sacrifice in my life.
As a family, we all go to bed at 9 or 9.30 a.m.
And that means saying no to a lot of social events.
A lot of social dinners.
We don't even remember, as a family,
when we went out for the last time after 8 a.m.
We don't go out.
When we go out, it feels like a different experience.
Delhi looks like this at night.
There's so much crowd on the streets.
No, there isn't. Whatever the case may be.
And that's something that I have to do.
And I want to do.
To get to where I want.
Which is control over my time.
Which is success for me in my life.
Without a sacrifice,
no person can achieve success in any field.
Whether it's a sacrifice of time,
relationships, money,
enjoyment, obsession,
or pleasure.
It has to be there.
I've seen the startup founders very closely.
And all the unicorn founders that you know of,
whom I know personally,
not all, but several of them,
have worked very, very hard.
They've worked very hard.
They haven't gone home for a few days.
They've gone to the office,
they've set up a mattress and gone to sleep.
The next day, they wake up and get back to work.
And you'll be like,
what's the use of such a life?
And yes, maybe it's not useful.
And that is your personal choice.
But what you can't complain about
is that I didn't make a sacrifice.
That person made a sacrifice.
But why didn't I get what he got?
Because that sacrifice was the only way
to get that thing.
There is nothing that people get
simply because of luck.
Your hard work, your sacrifice
defines your luck.
So, what's the real choice?
And this is where the video
where 90% of the people have said,
I don't want to listen to this, bro.
You have to chill in life.
There should be a balance in life.
I don't want to regret when I'm 80.
I want to be the regret minimization framework
that Jeff Bezos has.
I don't understand what he wants to say.
But the 10% who are still connected,
who really want to see what success means like,
what is the choice?
And here is what the choice is.
You have to make a sacrifice.
You have to struggle.
You can't escape that.
The question is,
what is worth struggling for?
Which struggle is worth struggling for?
What is the pain in life
that is worth it?
Because there will be pain.
There will be pain.
When you go to the gym
and start lifting for the first time,
you feel the pain.
Your whole body aches.
But some people are like,
that's worth it.
For the first time in many years,
my body is awake.
I can feel different parts of my body.
This pain, this soreness is worth it.
But 90%
who have left this video,
they are like,
it's hurting so much, we won't go tomorrow.
I won't let you go.
What do you want to do?
Do it next year.
Do it next month.
Do it next week.
Everything is procrastination.
But those 10% are like,
I am ready to fight and struggle for something that's worth it.
So if you are in a job
where you show up every day
and you know that struggle is not worth it
because you could have put that struggle in your business,
in your startup,
in your freelancing career,
in a new job,
in a new company,
then make that decision.
Make that decision.
You are stuck in a relationship,
in a toxic relationship
and you are struggling.
You are making sacrifices.
You are away from your friends,
you are away from your family,
you are away from yourself.
It's not worth it.
But you are like, you know what?
I am willing.
I am willing to sacrifice for a relationship that's worth it.
And I will find that relationship.
I am looking for that relationship.
I want to find that because that is worth sacrificing for.
So don't look for a comfortable life in life.
You will get a beautiful life only through struggles in life.
The question is, which struggle is worth it?
So when a lot of people talk about hustle culture,
I get upset.
Because hustle is glorified so much
that you are working for hours,
you have no clue how much time has passed,
you are away from your family,
you are not spending time with yourself,
you don't have time to cut your hair,
you don't have time to eat at the right time,
you don't have time to sleep at the right time,
you are sleeping for 4 hours,
you are sleeping for 3 hours,
and it becomes very glorified.
All this is nonsense.
Because if that's not making you move forward,
but simply draining you physically, mentally, emotionally,
then it's not hustle.
It's stupidity.
But the same struggle
towards the right thing can change your life.
So don't waste your hours to make money.
Narayan Murthy, Shah Rukh Khan,
Leander Pace, Sachin Tendulkar,
Messi, Mughesh Ambani,
they didn't wake up every day to make money.
They woke up to do the best thing in their lives.
Somebody wanted to become king of Bollywood,
somebody wanted to become the best cricketer in the world,
somebody wanted to build the biggest business in the world.
These are all personal motivations.
Nothing to do with money.
Money is an outcome,
which they know that if we reach there,
we will definitely come back.
But what they are driven by
is their purpose.
And that purpose makes their struggle meaningful.
So hustle,
not because you will make money from that.
Hustle, not because it looks cool in front of your friends.
Hustle, because it's making you
move towards where you want to go.
Hustle, because that's who you truly are.
Work-life balance is a myth.
But this balance can become a reality,
a beautiful reality for the right purpose.
The choice is yours.
