Honored to be here with Grammy nominated pop sensation,
by the way, and just an all-around woman
who has showed us, honestly, the way
of how to live your life and fight for your truth
and be strong and be badass and be amazing.
I mean, you have so many hit songs
that we've been rocking out to lately.
It is the one and only Kesha, everybody.
Recession pop.
Oh yeah, welcome.
Well, and I realized that one of your hits
came out in 2008, and that was also a time of recession.
And so what do we need to know about recession pop,
which is attributed to your new album as well?
Okay, so I used to be a telemarketer,
refinancing home loans.
No.
So I think it might have been my fault.
You were the call that set everything,
Dom, no effect in motion.
So my bad.
But it just happens that I think when I put out bangers,
it coincides with people needing to party really hard.
I mean, just what the doctor ordered,
I believe they said.
Ready to rage.
Just what the Kesha ordered.
I mean, you really create songs
that are defining of a moment
and become the soundtrack of our lives.
Do you know when you're working on the song
and doing the beats and laying everything down
and doing the vocals and you're putting it all together,
is there a moment where you're like.
It's gonna be a recession.
It's gonna be a recession banger and a hit.
Honestly, no.
Because you make songs.
So I teach songwriting
because I feel like it's so cathartic, it's so therapeutic.
But once you release it into the world,
you just, it's not yours anymore.
It's not up to me, it's up to all of you.
And it is timing, it's divine, really.
How does your mom.
Did she teach you about writing?
Did she show you a method or a way?
Yeah, so my mom is a songwriter,
but she was a songwriter for Dolly Parton,
Johnny Cash, Iconic, Amazing.
So yeah, and I grew up in Nashville
and I had purple hair by the time I was 10.
And was your mom like, it's cool, you can have purple hair?
Yeah, she was like, go crazy.
But then I had a hard time in school, let's say.
Oh my God, me too.
You did too?
Yeah, I didn't make it.
Well, the basic bitches had no idea what to do with me.
How did your mom realize that she had this talent?
She's just been writing songs since like the 80s.
She actually made a record in the 80s,
it sounds kind of like Kate Bush.
It's been like lost in time.
And on my own record label, Kesha Records, that I started.
Yes.
I will be releasing her music as well.
Really?
Yeah.
I cannot wait to hear her music.
So good.
And Kesha Records, to me, your record label
is an incredible example of taking the things
that you've experienced and been through
and writing literally like becoming the human pen
and writing what is, I don't wanna say your history
because we're in it now,
but I just, let me speak more directly
because I don't wanna speak in metaphors.
You've been through stuff, you experienced difficult things
and what you decided to do was to take
those life experiences and protect other people with it.
Yes, exactly.
And have such admiration and respect for that.
And everything I hear about your records
and how you wanna conduct your tours
and how you wanna make sure people
have a safe, healthy environment.
Did that come from the things you've experienced
and what you wished you had had for yourself?
Oh, 100%, absolutely.
I want my legacy to be protecting
and creating a safe space for all people and artists.
And I want that to be like my dying legacy, yeah.
Taking, making sure your mic's not covered.
Oh yeah.
Sorry, keep talking.
Oh, you're in the engagement ring top.
Oh my God.
This is made of engagement rings
of all the men who tried.
Oh my God.
This is so cool.
That is rad.
I'm also, I'm like really into witchy stuff.
Have you always been?
Did you find that along the way?
Oh my God, the whole time, the whole time.
And so now I'm manifesting a sugar daddy and a yacht
and maybe like a couple sugar daddies.
I would like at least 40 husbands.
By the way, there are men who have said that
and they're not shamed for it, so why not?
I'm so excited for your album and your tour.
I've been down to getting.
Oh my God, no, keep it with me.
Oh my God, Kesha's new album, Period,
which I like, that says everything,
is out July 4th, which is Independence Day,
which has a lot to do with the album.
Being an independent, being fierce, being brave.
Absolutely.
So July 4th, everybody.
And-
Thank you.
