Dog Swap Drama! Mangos First Haircut & Lennys Big Operation - Rescue Vet with Dr Scott

This week on Rescue Vet I call on my friend for a favour Hello That's quite the look, isn't it? As Mango gets his very first haircut Good boy In the ultimate dog swap I wondered if you could detesticle him Yes, yes, again, a very good vet return As my boy continues to settle into family life Hi guys, Dr Scott Miller here Becoming my sidekick in everything I do I'm Dr Scott And this Is Rescue Vet It's spring in Chobham And with the sun finally making an appearance in the UK There's only one thing to do And that's enjoy one of mine and Mango's favourite pastimes A run Hey buddy, good boy So I'm in the park and Getting to run with Mango which is super awesome It's one of my favourite things to do Now he's fully grown, his joints are ready to roll He's really hairy And as a result he gets a lot of dirt A lot of brambles caught up in his coat Because it's a rescue I don't know exactly what breed he is So I've just sort of waited While grooming him to see If he's grown really And then we can sculpt accordingly But for now, enjoying a run Last summer I really hurt my back I had two slipped discs at the same time I could barely move and I was in hospital for a week And it was a very painful process But I really wanted to run with this guy But of course I was waiting until he was fully matured To make sure it was okay for his joints But now I'm back to full health Just being very careful about things But I absolutely love running And so does Mango We're such good mates, we're so close It's a real moment of kinship Where we both feel free Unhindered by life We're just running, enjoying the moment Seizing the day And that's the bit I absolutely love And to see how much joy this dog has In running around in the wilds of Surrey Is amazing And it just makes the run all the more joyful Mango and I have been together For nearly ten months now And I honestly just can't think Of life before really Because we're just really bonded It's been really nice Because it's been a difficult time Personally in a lot of ways But people go through tough stuff But it's just a reminder of Dogs and how awesome they are And that he has given me so much unconditional love And he's just such a sweetheart And fun and funny and silly And joyful All the things that you need when you're feeling a little low And so when I feel a little down Now we just go for a run Mango and I now are pretty much inseparable He comes everywhere with me I was on a photoshoot yesterday, he was there He comes to the practice He comes to pick up the kids on the school run with me And then yes, we are that coupling Which means that he does sleep with me every single night As close as he possibly can Sometimes this close I feel slightly less whole when he's not around And I think he loves his daddy So he's pretty needy So when the Dogs Trust first got in touch about Mango They said, oh he's three And then just before we went to go and see him They said, oh no, he's one And he had his adult teeth So that means he's older than six months, nine months maybe But it's hard to say definitely But I think he was definitely at the younger end Because he just kept growing He's now probably a third bigger than he was And also he had very short hair And now it's just gone, poof, out it goes So he is well and truly floofed up big time He's, yeah, at least another five kilograms or so than what he was He was very thin when I first got him Definitely a bit malnourished You could really feel his ribs But now he's got a nice covering there But he's just a bigger boy He's way bigger than I ever imagined he would be But he's perfect And now, well, I mean except for all the excess of fluff Because it's quite long now And I think someone needs to have his first haircut What do you think? So we've just finished a run Absolutely beautiful day But even still, have a look at Mango's feet Excuse me, I'm just going to embarrass you Look how disgusting they are So really long and furry And the nails, a bit muddy as well So he definitely needs some grooming And I know just the person to call But you're leaving the hair though Because that is magnificent Seeing as it's my canine son's first haircut Hi Mango The dreaded pose There's only one person I trust Caroline, aka the love mud dog lady And judging by the swamp I've just hosed off Mango's feet Let's hope she lives up to the name Hello That's quite the look, isn't it? It spins and everything I'm like cooking Oh my gosh It's not only that But it's like the stuff in your hair And this is the whole thing It's like you're obsessed with grooming Yours or dogs? It's one or the other I'm not grooming dogs It's myself with the beautification You're quite the vision Quite the vision indeed Anyway, you're taking my breath away But I need to talk professionally with you Professional to professional In that my dog Mango Is quite scruffy I can't hear you very well Oh yeah, no worries It's because you're under a fan Is it embarrassing to be on the street looking like that? Are you okay? A little bit I'm regretting it Well honey, I won't keep you too long But my dog Mango, rescue dog He's just grown into himself But I'm struggling with his coat It's sort of grown in every direction And he just needs his first groom So I couldn't think of anyone better to ask In order to get him sorted Oh, I love him That would be amazing Yeah, he's very floofy From recent pictures, isn't he? Yeah, he is It's just kind of grown from every spot And because I'm not sure What he's growing into Is he a working Cocker? Is he a Show Cocker? Is he a Springer Spaniel? I don't know He's just a Mango He's just a Mango, that's right So we just need to kind of He needs to have the edges trimmed off But he's got really furry feet He loves getting muddy So they're always disgusting He's got some little mats behind his ears So there's loads of things I need you to help me with So I didn't know if you'd come up to the practice And help me out I would absolutely love to I'm just suddenly thinking Just since you've asked I might need your assistance with something It's along similar lines actually With snipping Lenny needs his balls off Oh, okay So like a quid pro quo situation? Yeah, yeah, exactly, yeah I'm thinking, yeah Mutual snipping of dogs Yes, yes Just my cut's probably the harshest cut of all Yours is a beautiful haircut So, okay, yeah, deal It doesn't make sense really It does, doesn't it? No one wants that That makes you look like a professor If Lenny had any idea what the deal was He'd be the nervous one Hello Hi How you doing? This is Lenny Hi Lenny Hey you Hello, how are you? You alright? Yeah, good, you? Very well, thanks Very well Let me put this down You can see he's got very, very fluffy You are very floofy He is, he is, yes Hello Lenny Hello Bud, nice to meet you He's not quite as fluffy Oh, look at him, both gingers Hey Yeah, oh look Oh, this is going to be so much fun Yeah There's going to be accessories, glitter Oh God No, no, no No I'm nervous enough Don't turn him into some sort of freak, please No, we're going to look gorgeous, aren't we? He is just really adventurous now He just loves being outdoors But he loves mud This coat's a magnet, isn't it? For leaves and everything He's like a sponge Yeah Like when I wash him off after jumping in the river Like half the river comes off with him You know, so That's not ideal No, so he really does need to be trimmed a bit But I suppose what I've been doing is Waiting for him to sort of finish turning into whatever he is Because I don't know exactly what he is Because he's a rescue So he's probably a mixture of a number of spaniel breeds Yeah But now he's got to this point There's just a few bits that need tweaking So first of all I'd say the feet's the main one And you can see they look absolutely gigantic But when you bring it back His feet are sort of, toes are back here Yeah, we call them Grinch feet when they're like that Yeah Grinch feet, spaniel Grinch feet And he's getting a few little mats as well in between the toes Just really the sides bit So you can see they've got this sort of short coat The undercoat And then this feels to me like a sort of immature coat That maybe needs to sort of go away But I don't know how you approach that Excellent grooming term Yeah Yeah, so this is like the spaniel fluff But this will just tease out So this is going to come out beautifully And then reveal this lovely dark golden coat So it's hand stripping But we'll see how much we can do He's never been done before Seems like he's doing alright at the minute There's various tools I can use But yeah, just to try and get the bulk of that fluff off Right And then just have a really good tidy Okay, alright And we can't focus just on Mango alone No Because Lenny, his, well his time has come But for a different reason Less fun I think Yeah, Lenny's not quite sure why he's here He's just a bit excited and stressed But yeah, I wondered if you could detesticle him Yes, yes Again, a very good vetry term Well done I will castrate him I knew it, I knew it Yes, that's absolutely fine And it's good that we both trust each other So they'll both be in safe hands today And they're both losing something They are, they're going to be a lot lighter Both of us And then I just, you know, snip happens That kind of applies to both, doesn't it? He's all grown up He is He's an adolescent He is, he is So he's getting his first haircut downstairs Which I'm weirdly nervous about But then Caroline's equally nervous Because we're about to neuter her boy So, yeah You've probably got the worst deal I think so But it'll be quicker So, swings and roundabouts, you know So first of all Just going to do some handling You should be fine with handling really With what daddy does, isn't it? Hey? Just want to check for Okay, so we've got knots under the armpits And under the ear There we go, big old Knots, we'll get all those off first So, he's got Kind of the spaniel fluff As I would say We don't quite know what breed Mango is He looks like a spaniel But he's quite large So he might be a mix of spaniels Or crossed with something else But this fluff It just strips It's dead coat that we'll just strip out So, we're just going to strip as much as we can I'm using a blunt Coat King So I don't cut the coat And it'll give a more natural finish It will reveal this lovely gold colour That we've got And get rid of this, like, second Like, force field of fur That he's got round This fluff It can be caused by If the coat has been cut Or clipped But we know he hasn't been so Well, we think he hasn't been so far It can also be when they're spayed or neutered It can change the hormone levels in the coat And then cause this Fluff As we call it Don't we? We're just Because he's an unknown breed We're just winging it a little bit Aren't we? So we just get as much as we can off Using a Coat King And then a stripping stone as well You ready? Good boy Let's run that way Oh, I can't think about Lolly Having his balls off, bless him It's nice, it's comforting That he's just upstairs Lovely Think she'll approve of your Breeding, then? Probably not Your mum might not be too pleased Almost certainly not Yeah Messed up your haircut I didn't even think about that She's probably done this amazing Like, award winning groom And I've just made him look like A patchwork quilt Oh well He'll agree back Try not to think about it It's probably good that I'm busy Like, imagine if I was just sitting outside I'd be like, oh, my Lenny But no, he'll be fine He's in very, very good hands Yeah And I'll be here when he comes round Which will be lovely, actually I wonder how Mango's getting on If he's Being a good boy for his first haircut Probably the longest he's been away from me Since I've had him Bless him They all look fabulous There's just so much fluff here And you can see him And that looks like popcorn I mean, I don't know I don't definitely know what that is I didn't realise Mango was getting That involved in our movie nights Turns out he's been saving snacks for later That is one big Mat under the ear With every dog Certainly Spaniels I just take that section off Because if it's not there It's not going to get tangly and knotty So we don't get to this stage So, right How do you feel about clippers? Have we met clippers before? Oh Hey What's that? That's different, isn't it? You can sit down, that's fine Just make sure he's alright with the clippers first And check them Mango's cautiously getting used to the clippers Lenny's blissfully unaware of his And honestly He might prefer it that way I'm second guessing every clip I do now I think probably Vets groom his worst nightmares Yeah, I'd say so Just pair them with food Look Noise and food So he's then distracted with the food And you're pairing it with something positive It's not even just short back and sides It's short everywhere In patches Do a nice square Yeah, we do a very nice square That's right Sometimes we stretch it to a rectangle I don't know if Vets are known for their Bleat clipping What are you trying to say? It's very neat You've done a good job, yeah I pride myself on my clipping technique, actually I'm not as good as yours, but you know Better than yours isn't as good as Caroline's So who are we to judge? I'm always quite careful about squirtions as well I know, sweetheart I know What am I doing? I know what am I doing Good boy Here we go What on earth is that? What is it? That feels lighter, doesn't it? So we have got a gap there So I'll try and blend all of that later But there's nothing you can do with that There's no dematting or tangling And you certainly don't take scissors to that area Because it would cause all sorts of trouble I know, I got it off I thank you Hey You're welcome You don't want to eat it That very silay you did really good Well done, sausage Shall we do the other one? Come on then Looks like Mango wasn't the only one Hiding a little something in his fluff I'm not sure what would SS on him Wouldn't it look nice? Sticky and crusty Definitely wee Nice Sometimes they have a sort of strange opening To their prepuce, the kind of cover of their penis But his is fine I think it's just all the hair At the end there Sort of directing the wee in the wrong direction So Yes, I'm not going to say I'm grooming his penis But I'm just giving him a little sort of manscaping Manscaping Think Mango might be glad he's not signed up For any manscaping today Mate, no one wants a wee covered dog So just a bit of a manscape Yeah That's what you need Yeah His testicles look absolutely pristine Beautiful So now just his willy needs sorting Okay Charged a lot of money for that sort of book Mango, I wonder how Lenny's getting on I wonder if Lenny's still with baubles or without baubles I'm sure he's okay It's a good job you were here to distract me Isn't it? I'm sure he's fine I didn't think I'd say that But I'm just evening up his penis Just to make sure it looks nice Okay Yeah Five years of uni This is what it's come down to My culmination of my entire career is Trimming a dog's penis hair Great Can I have this paw, sweetheart? Yep, fine We'll wonder how little Mango's getting on What if he's I am, I am I'm just wondering what sort of look he's sporting As long as he doesn't mess with his hair too much I think that's the big thing Because I understand everything else We need to remove any of the bits and pieces That are getting matted But I don't want him to lose his fro No Yeah, he's got very fluffy feet, hasn't he? Yes, you can come in now All done It's done very well The one thing I do have to admit to Is, first of all, clipping Not to your standard Second of all You did need a bit of manscaping here Because he had a lot of urine That was sticking to his underside And it's not because of an abnormality To his penis or his pepuse Because I checked that and it's fine I think it's just the hair It's kind of wickering Yeah, I never knew whether to leave that hair On the end of the line Yes, so I've gotten rid of it So you can tell me if it's effective or not But now he has a nicely maintained Manscaped area Beautiful, that's a bonus, isn't it? That is just an insane amount of fur to come off a dog It's a process, isn't it darling? You'll look good at the end, won't you? Oh, there we go Oh, good boy Good boy There's enough hair on the floor to make a second Mango But the real one's still loving all the attention Next up, blow dry and styling And I can't wait to see the results I'm so excited to see Mango Because I haven't had him by my side Normally he's literally stuck like Velcro right beside me But today he's been with Caroline for quite a while actually I feel I've had the better deal today In that I did the neutering pretty quickly Caroline's been slaving over a Hot Cocker Spaniel For the last two or three hours But I really can't wait to see what he looks like I hope he still looks like my baby I'm a very proud dad He's such a gorgeous dog And I'm sure however he looks He'll still be the same boy I just hope he doesn't come out wearing something ridiculous Caroline's known for tiaras and blooming glitter So, don't want any of that I just want my dog back looking vaguely sane Right, go find him Go find him Mango, here Hi, hi Wow, oh you look great He's gorgeous Have you missed your dada? Oh my gosh Caroline, you've done a beautiful job He's so lovely And he smells Rhubarb Amazing I know, he smells like cake You've done a cracking job mate It looks so good He's, wow He looks like a show dog He's ready for the arena I know, it's like crafts We've just missed it Oh my gosh It just shows how much work goes in You've been in there for ages Yeah, and it was such a big job as well He's like, don't mess it up It's a really big job Because he's never been done No So, because he is, you know I've mostly stripped him Still we need some more doing down here And down there But it's for the first session And we've got the bulk of it done And he did so good Didn't you? Oh, thank you so much I feel like a bit of a negligent dad if I'm honest Because, you know When he was growing And then he kept changing I was like, well what do I groom him into? You know So I've just tried to brush it But not limit his lifestyle And what he wanted to do But, you know He loves the water And he loves the forest So he just gets muck And even though we wash him all the time And brush him Unfortunately, those little lumps Were getting a bit beyond me Yeah, so under the ears And you'll notice there's a couple of gaps Under the armpits as well But they're really common area That's completely bald Yeah, but actually It'll grow You get away with that, don't you? Yeah, because it's hidden Yeah, exactly And it'll never be this kind of bad again Yes Because it was the first time So now it's not there to get matted And that's the idea As an owner and groomer You have to work together Because you have to find a style that works for you That you like the look of Yeah But that is practical Yes Because you might want it more lovely And full coated And, you know But actually it's just too hard to maintain He still looks like him, thank goodness A little darker I know Like, yeah Yeah He's gone genre, isn't he? Came in blonde Yeah Slightly redder I think he looks He's so lovely And we kept the paws quite floofy Yes So Paws quite floofy But still a lot off But tidy Thank you I mean He'll be tired It's absolutely amazing Okay, I'm going to go and get your boy now Yes Thank you Come on then Come on Here he is Yay Hello, baby Here's mummy Hello Good boy Oh, hello, sweetheart How are you feeling? Yes, Aunty Caroline's sorted them Hello And then we had to clip behind his ears He had a few mats there Yeah But the most important thing I've got a new feeling, then He kept his crown in glory My little mohawk Can't miss that What we have decided to trim is the mutton chops I still don't appreciate Yeah, but look He looks so good with his beard, he was matching you Now he's all barefaced I can't grow a beard anywhere near his Like you And doesn't he look handsome? That's his first haircut as a big boy I know Eight months, can you believe it? Yeah Eight months since we've had him, Quinn Yeah, I know Since that day Amazing Yeah, it feels like eight years, you could say Does it? Well, it feels like forever a little bit, doesn't it? Yeah It feels like it feels hard to think that Exactly We had life without him Yeah, every time you get a dog After like a week, suddenly it feels like You've never not had the dog I think that they They maybe fill a void that you didn't know that you had Exactly Yeah Yeah, that's why I think we should get another Fill more of the void Oh, really? There's a lot of a void we need to fill Because it was 17, wasn't it? We needed, I only got the one So I did disappoint quite a bit, didn't I? No, that was See, I have 16 more I need to fill 16 more voids of love Yeah, exactly Exactly 16 more dogs, and I think that'll be an appropriate amount Yeah But I think he's matured into a really lovely dog He's got very tall And he's quite big And he's maybe not what we initially thought, but No, we thought he was going to be small, didn't we? Yeah Yeah, like look, look how tall he is Look at that Wow He's such a big boy now I know So when I first mentioned about calling him Manga You weren't too chuffed about that What do you think about it now? I mean, Mango It's a good, good name It was a good try Really good try Thanks Well, it suits him now, don't you think? Yeah, yeah You could have still done better? I could have done better We know this All my animals are named the perfect things You know that, you know that Yeah, you're Mango, aren't you? He's very Mango-y He's just a very summertime kind of dog Yeah Which makes sense with Mango See that? Oh my god I don't think I'll ever get bored of doing this I just I will Look at it And then in the breeze, it's just another level Look at that He's giving those 80s pop singers right now Oh yeah, yeah Exactly how you looked in the 80s Well, thanks I was about 12, but thanks 12, 40, same thing The Scott?
