A flock of red knots has arrived in the tundra.
They travel a long way to breed.
Oh, a chick is just hatching out of its eggs.
The tiny red knot enjoys eating the precious prey and grows strong.
There's plenty of food in the tundra,
and that's what brings these birds all the way from New Zealand.
Scientists keep track of them to learn where they come from and where they go.
Very carefully, they check each bird's health and attach flags to its legs.
Now, we can recognize them anywhere in the world.
Red knots begin their long journey to South.
Climate change poses serious threats to birds in many ways.
Unpredictable weather patterns make their migrations even more dangerous.
One red knot tries to land,
but it gets caught in the mist net near the fish ponds and can't escape.
Other birds that land successfully face a world full of plastic.
On a site polluted by chemical farms and plastic waste,
there's nothing to eat.
No place to rest your wings here.
One more flight to the next site,
but the red knots spot the wind turbines ahead.
They decide to take a long way around to avoid the unexpected danger.
But it leaves them even more exhausted.
Finally, they arrive at a stopover site.
Clear seas and cleaner wetlands are waiting for the red knots to land,
but where do they go?
On the reclaimed mudflats,
the red knots are met only by the noise of landfills.
They try to find something to eat,
but their search quickly ends when a dog scares them off.
They can finally feed themselves in the safe spot they worked so hard to find,
but their empty stomachs from the long journey aren't easily satisfied.
Far away, someone in the city is watching the exhausted red knots.
People are taking action to share spaces with birds.
We can use dog leashes, reduce the plastic,
advocate for sustainable urban planning,
turn off unnecessary lights.
Let's manage the threats to migratory birds
and create bird-friendly cities and communities.
You can share with your community the threats migratory birds face
and the actions you can take to solve the problem.
Could our efforts help ensure a safe migration of red knots?
Time passes.
From a distance, the calls of red knots can be heard.
Red knot flocks are bringing their friends back to the cleaner habitats.
Now, red knots can spend their stopover and non-wading season safely
near our cities and communities.
The geographic routes that migratory birds travel each year are called flyways.
One of them, the East Asian Australasian Flyway, or EAAF,
stretches from Russian Far East and Alaska
to the East and Southeast Asia, down to Australia and New Zealand.
World Migratory Bird Day is a global campaign to raise awareness
about the importance of protecting migratory birds and their habitats.
To support this effort, the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership
and its global partners, the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals,
the Agreement on the Conservation of African Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds,
and Environment for the Americas,
to protect migratory birds and their habitats across the world's major flyways.
The 2025 theme, Shared Spaces, Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities,
invites us to reflect on how we share our environments with birds
and how we can build communities that support better coexistence.
There are still so many threats surrounding birds in this society.
How do you encounter birds? In which places and what actions do you take?
Let's start with small actions and create bird-friendly cities and communities.
