Zhongli Quan, one of the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian) in Taoist tradition, is a legendary figure from the Zhou Dynasty (c. 1122 B.C.), a period when Taoism and Confucianism shaped Chinese philosophy. Unlike gods, the Eight Immortals were ordinary people who achieved immortality through Taoist principles.

Zhongli Quan studied Taoism, alchemy, and magic under Li Tieguai, the first Immortal. His path to immortality began dramatically when his house collapsed, revealing a sacred book with instructions for eternal life. Following these, he ascended to heaven on a cloud, becoming an Immortal.

A key tale involves his wife and a test of loyalty. While mortal, Zhongli helped a widow dry her husband’s grave to remarry, using his magical fan. His wife criticized the widow’s actions, prompting Zhongli to test her loyalty. He faked his death, transformed into a handsome man, and seduced her. She agreed to steal his “dead” body’s brain for a potion, only to discover Zhongli alive. Ashamed, she took her own life, and Zhongli, grieving, burned their house, uncovering the immortality book—possibly hidden by Li Tieguai.

As an Immortal, Zhongli traveled, spreading wisdom with his iconic palm-leaf fan, which could resurrect the dead. Notably, he did not revive his wife, suggesting lingering resentment. He mentored Lan Caihe, an eccentric female Immortal known for her barefoot wandering and flower basket.

Zhongli is depicted as a plump, bearded, bald elder with a pot belly, symbolizing wisdom from countless lifetimes. Historical records from the Tang and Song Dynasties describe his mystical feats, like inscribing spiritual poetry or regrowing hair instantly, reinforcing his immortal status.

In the famous tale of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea, Zhongli used his fan as a raft, showcasing his unique powers alongside others who used ordinary objects. This story inspired the saying, “The Eight Immortals crossing the sea, each demonstrating their unique divine powers,” symbolizing individual strengths overcoming challenges.

Zhongli’s story intertwines immortality, love, betrayal, and wisdom. It highlights that immortality is not just eternal life but a timeless legacy. His journey underscores the pursuit of self-discovery, the testing of trust, and the power of individual talents.
