The Ear

This is the remarkable human Ear. I attempt to explain the outer, middle and inner ear, and how nerves connect with the brain to convert sound to the sensation of hearing. The ear has a second function also - for the detection of balance and movement.
We developed the ear from bones that initially were found in fish and early reptiles. What we think of as a fish tongue, actually became the tympanic membrane in mammals. In humans, we are super-evolved the ear to help us with all the survival advantages of upright gait, and hearing itself has become super specialised to hear speech and to enable communication.
