I cannot explain to you how warm it is
in this greenhouse this morning. Let's
check the temperature together. Already
28.2 54% but he's not happy. What's
going on? It was about 50% yesterday. It
must be a combination of temperature and
this together. He doesn't even have a
face today. That can't be good, can it?
If he doesn't even have a face. Anyway,
hi everyone. Welcome back to my alotment
diaries. My name's Emma. These are the a
lotment diaries. And it's blooming hot
today. Uh it's going to be the hottest
day of the year so far. I think it's
going to be like 29° in London, so come
prepared in the most inappropriate a
lotment outfit. But it's so cool, this
dress. Like cool as in thin. Um it's
just it's from
uh a website called Nobody's Child and I
got it in the sale. They always put all
their dresses and stuff in the sale and
I always pick them up really cheap from
there and they're just beautiful. It's
um like a loose cotton and it's just so
breathable and nice and I can just move
in it and stuff. Just have to be careful
the way that I crouch down. Right, I'm
going to start by giving everything in
here a really good water. I wasn't here
yesterday and it was still quite hot.
Um, I've left the windows open and the
greenhouse is still standing which is
incredible. So, it didn't blow away.
Good news. The cosmos is doing so well.
Look at this cosmos. That is doing
amazing. That is fantastic. He's getting
really lots of leaves. A lot of you
might say to pinch them out. I wonder if
I should pinch him out. Pinching them
out is supposed to make more flowers,
but at the same time, I'm a little bit
worried about doing that
because No, you know what? Don't
overthink it, Emma. Pinch him out. Oh my
god, I can't believe I just did that.
There you go. I didn't overthink it. We
pinched him out. It's because you get
flowers on the side shoots of most
flowers. Actually, the flowers on the
side shoots. The idea is is that if you
pinch out the middle growing
bit, I don't think I can pinch those
out. They're a little bit early. Oh no,
maybe I can. Yeah, if you pinch out the
top, it will force the plant to grow
outwards. What basically happens, guys,
I'm going to tell you the science behind
this. Now, what basically happens is the
plant is growing up, right? He wants to
grow up and up and up. He wants to grow
up towards the light. He wants to go up
towards the sky. He's going up. He's
going up. I then suddenly come along and
pinch him out. And he thinks, "Oh no,
danger. Danger. I can't go up. If I
can't go up, where can I go? I can go
out." So then they start throwing shoots
out to try and avoid the danger. The
danger being me and my little fingers
pinching them out. And then they throw
out more side shoots and then you get
more flowers. And that is why I'm not on
gardeners world because that is the
extent of my explanations on stuff to do
with plants. But hopefully you found it
helpful. Right, I'm going to feed
everything in here. I'm going to water
it and feed it at the same time. So
let's do that first before we melt.
[Music]
[Music]
water. Right. And then we're using a
plant food. This is again the Andamat
one. Um, grow pure fruit and vegetable.
It is 100% organic, made for plants, by
plants, has a really good mix of lots of
good stuff in
it. We're just going to pour it in
because I think everything just really
needs
feeding. All needs some
[Music]
goodness, right? So, in really warm
weather like this, like really hot
weather, it's a good idea to water
twice. So, what I've done is I've
watered it all now. And what that will
do is basically wet the soil, but the
water might not get through to the roots
how I want it to cuz it might evaporate
before then cuz it's too blooming hot.
So, what we'll do is we'll leave that
for a little bit, come back to it a bit
later, and water it all again. And the
second water hopefully, fingers crossed,
will go through to the roots of the
plant. And then that will make sure the
plant gets a really good drink, which is
what it needs. I am
getting I didn't even notice I've got
tomatoes. How's this happening, guys?
It's mate. I was going to say I've got
some flowers, but behind the flowers,
I've got a little tomato
already. I can't believe it. Yeah, most
of them are getting flowers now. This is
amazing. This is just incredible. It's
so early.
[Music]
Right. Broad beans doing absolutely
incredibly. I mean, do I have any
yet? I don't have any yet, but I've got
lots and lots of flowers. And they're
huge. I mean, they're absolutely huge. I
know they're like a smaller variety, but
for a smaller variety, they've done
incredibly. They're they're really big.
Can't tell you how weird it is to be
saying this, to be saying like my broad
beans are doing great. I feel like this
year, everything I'm planting is
actually growing. Every seed that I'm
sewing is actually coming up and then
staying up. Like this did not happen
last year. Last year was just an an
what's it called? An anonym an anonym an
an
anonym. What is that word? Last year was
an anonyomy. Is that the word? Anonyomy.
You know it's like a weird offputting
crazy strange year that just came out of
nowhere and bits all in the bum. That's
how last year was. It was an
anonyomy. That's not the right word. I
sound really stupid. Um, also these
don't have any bugs on them. They don't
have any blackfly. So, normally with
broad beans, you have like quite a big
blackfly infestation on them, or I
always do because I planted these in the
autumn time, the bugs haven't got to
them, so there's no bugs on them for me
to do anything. So, I'm just going to
leave them. I might just give them a bit
more support cuz they are falling down a
little bit. Yeah, let's just tie them in
a bit more just in case a little weird
gust of wind decides to turn up and ruin
our parade.
ruin our parade. You know, ruin the
party. You know what wind can be like.
Always wants to get
involved. Right. I'm going to feed all
of my sweet corn that I planted out as
well. This is a Gold Crest variety of
sweet corn. I remember that. See, every
time I mention my sweet corn, I will
tell you the variety because it's the
only plant that I've remembered the
variety that I've sewn.
So, going to milk it. I'm going to give
it a feed cuz it is looking a little bit
sad. I don't think it's because of
nutrients, though. I think it's because
I took it straight from the greenhouse
and put it straight outside and plants
don't normally like that. Normally you
have to do something called harden
hardening out. So you take your plants
out of the greenhouse, put them outside
for the day, take them back in at night,
do that for a week or so, then you put
them in a sheltered place. You kind of
like ease them into their new
environment. I didn't do that. I just I
just took them all from the sanctuary or
the greenhouse and bunged them straight
outside into the wild and just said,
"Fend for yourself." So they are they
are still alive. Like I haven't totally
killed them. They're doing okay. They
will bounce back from this, but
obviously they are just I mean it's been
a bit of a shock. It's been a shock,
hasn't it, mate? It's been a shock. So,
all of them have sort of had a bit of a
bit of a shock. So, we'll see if we can
perk them up a little bit.
[Music]
[Music]
darling. Stunning. Haven't seen him
today,
but might turn up.
some of
these. Oh my gosh, you're sitting right
there staring at me. He's literally
sitting in the tree staring at me.
That's so creepy,
Einstein. That's so
creepy. I didn't know you were
[Music]
there. Came out of nowhere. Einstein
came out nowhere.
[Music]
thinks I'm telling him off. I'm not
telling you off. It's just that you
really scared me. Came out of nowhere.
[Music]
Right, it is a little bit of a flouncy
around day in the a lotment today. I
wouldn't normally film on a day like
this cuz I don't have tons and tons to
do, but you guys say that you enjoy
watching anything I do. Somebody left a
comment and said that they would watch
me just sitting in my a lotment doing
nothing. So, I don't know why I'm
bothering. Yeah, not sure why I'm
bothering to do all these camera angles
and make all this content. You just
watch me sitting here. I mean, that's so
easy. Anyway, I did bring a swing with
me today. It's a crazy Amazon purchase
that I made really late at night and I
just thought, you know what, I really
want to swing and um I don't know if I'm
going to be able to get it up today cuz
there's a lot of people here and I don't
want them staring at me and sort of
being like, what is she doing? But
there's the perfect branch for a swing.
It's that one. It's that one there. It's
really strong and it's the perfect
branch for a swing. And I just thought,
you know what? I could really, really
have a swing there just hanging down.
Light today is insane. I can't find
anywhere to stay where you can see me
properly. But hopefully you can see
this. The end of the rope is basically a
loop. So, you just loop it over a branch
and then you got swing. And I just
thought, how brilliant. I'm going to do
that. Might give it a go. Yeah, let's
let's do it. Right. Nobody's watching
me. Nobody cares. Come on, we can do it.
We need a chair.
It's a bit high. Oh no. I must have not
done the measurements right. Actually, I
didn't do the measurements at all. I
don't think I'm going to be able to sit
on that. But I will give it a good go.
[Music]
I mean, I'm not going to lie, it's not
very relaxing sitting on that. In fact,
it's probably the opposite of relaxing.
It's actually very, very scary. I sort
of quite like the way it looks. I wonder
if Einstein would use it if I put some
bird food on there. Anyway, it's too
high. It's too high. The rope is too
short. So I need to uh revisit the swing
idea. Still we
[Music]
[Music]
tried. Right. This is my sort of random
sweet pea teepee. Basically, I had extra
sweet peas left over, and I decided to
make a little teepee here to grow them
up. We thought they were dead. They're
not dead. They're actually doing
fantastically. This is just a message to
myself not to pull up sweet peas when I
think they're dying again. I'm never
going to do that again. I'm just going
to leave them because these have all
bounced back. It needs a bit of
TLC. So, we're going to start by giving
it a bit of a
weed because the weeds have really gone
crazy around this sweet PTP and they
just love it here. And it's really hard
for me to get in and weed. So, it sort
of requires specialist attention. That's
what it
requires. Which I do not mind doing as
long as the plant survives. Like, they
have to give something back. You know,
if the plants were dying, I'll be like,
"No, you're on your own. Sorry. It's
your own
fault." But because they're they're
thriving, they get my help. It's their
reward.
[Music]
Oh my god. Just stood in a red ants
nest. God, they were all on my
trainer. Just I just throw my trainer
across the a lotment. Oh my
[Music]
god. Oh my god. Why do I never see
anyone else throwing their trainers
across the a lotment plot in a panic?
Why is it just
me? Surely one of you out there is the
same as me. Please tell me you are.
Einstein, what do you think? Just came
over to check I was all right. You just
sat right next to me. Then you worried
about me or you just worried that you
won't get your breakfast anymore?
[Music]
Still can't find my
[Music]
scissors. There we go. So, we're making
it bigger now. So, we're just adding
more twine to it.
We'll use another bit of twine around
the bottom here to tie them all in
together. So, I'm not going to go around
tying them all in individually because
that would just take me hours. So, I'm
just going to wrap them in the
twine. Not being very cooperative, are
they? Not sort of going the way I want
them to go. I don't know why they're
being
so Well, let's not insult them too much,
eh? Because they might stop
growing. It's all right. I didn't mean
it, guys. Didn't mean it. You're lovely.
You're
amazing. Risking my life for red ants
now. And I got a skirt on. Oh
god. Nice
combination. Red ants and a skirt.
Right. That should keep them
all going the way I want them to go,
hopefully. Are you going to Yeah. Right,
there we go. Sweet PTP
sorted. Excellent. Also, I've just
noticed got loads of bites on my wrist
here. Does anybody know where these
bites are from or what creature might
have done this? I know it could be like
so many different creatures. They're
like little red dots and they're really
itchy and then they disappear and they
sort of come back again. It's very
frustrating, but I am used to being
bitten and scratched in the garden. But
it it would just be nice to know what's
biting me.
Right. This is my Clemetus that goes
over my
shed as you can see. I'm just wondering
if I can manipulate him to not go over
the windows. I sort of want him to go
around them. I don't know if that's
possible, but we're going to try. We're
going to
try.
So, I don't want to hurt him or
anything. I just want to, you know, go
this way. That's it. Go that way. These
plants, they tend to go where they want
to go, don't they? They don't tend to
listen to us all the time.
So, I've just snapped him off. I've just
killed him. So, he can't go up the
middle now. But he could still go up the
middle if you just go that
way. That's it.
Yeah, sort of. I think this is going to
be uncontrollable to be honest. Even
though I've bent it, I think it'll just
send shoots out this way cuz he wants to
go up, doesn't he? Doesn't want to go
sideways. But maybe we could sort of
avoid the middle bit of the window. Or I
don't know. Maybe I should just leave
him
alone. I've ordered some Zenia seeds. I
really wanted to grow Zenia flowers last
year and they just kept dying. Like they
kept getting wiped out by slugs and
snails, but I think this year they might
do better because obviously the
weather's better. So, I've ordered some.
They are arriving soon and I'm going to
sew them directly. Um probably in my
flower bed to be honest. Might pot on
and then put them around a bit randomly.
But um I've ordered those this year
which I wasn't going to do which is
quite a nice little surprise cuz the
weather's just doing its thing, isn't
it? It's just so good. I've got so many
strawberry flowers at the moment. It's
insane. Everything's doing really well.
So, I'm going to leave it there today. I
hope you've enjoyed it. If you have, do
subscribe to my channel. See you next
time, guys. Thanks for watching. Bye.
