Nick Jonas chatted with “Extra” ahead of his big Broadway opening night for “The Last Five Years.” Reflecting on whether being on tour with the Jonas Brothers or doing Broadway is harder, he said their last tour — which covered give albums in a three-hour show — was good training for the “marathon” that this play is for him and co-star Adrienne Warren. He also talked about how the show explore those moments when we can get “lost in the sauce” while chasing our creative dreams, noting that it’s important to have a supportive partner, as he does in wife Priyanka Chopra. Nick shared that they and daughter Malti Marie have been enjoying walks in Central Park and said the quiet family time helps him reset from the intensity of being on stage.
And I kept thinking, what a demanding role this is.
I mean, what's more demanding, doing this show, or being on the road with the road?
Very challenging. This is quite the marathon. It's so extraordinary to watch.
The show has so many fans. And the themes really resonate.
The themes of two artists chasing their dreams and trying to make a relationship work.
Is that something that drew you to this role?
And how do you and Priyanka manage to make that work yourself?
It doesn't matter if you're a musician or an artist or a writer, an actor.
I feel like if you have that creative bone in you, you can look and say,
okay, that's me and Jamie at this moment. That's me and Cathy.
I think one of the things that I have always loved about it is that idea that
sometimes we get lost in the sauce and we're just in the moment and
kind of lose ourselves as we're chasing our dreams.
And I think the important thing is to have a partner who supports that
and sees the good even in the tough moments when you get lost in the haze of creativity.
And I certainly am lucky to have that.
You guys are a couple's goals, and what a beautiful family you are.
When you're not on stage, are you girls and you enjoying time in New York City?
Is there anything that you like to do while you're in town?
Well, we're loving just nice walks through Central Park.
That quiet family time is such a good reset from being here at the theater, as you saw when you saw the show.
It's pretty intense at times.
The schedule, eight shows a week, is a lot, but it actually allows for me to have time with them
and be in one place, which when you're on the road, you don't always get.
So it's been a nice change of pace.
That's really wonderful. And lastly, it's an incredible Broadway season that you are now a part of.
Have you had an opportunity to take in any other shows while you're here?
You know, it's been tough because we were in rehearsals and previews,
but I got to see my friend Michael Park's show Redwood, which was fantastic.
Idina Menzel's obviously the best living legend.
There's so many shows on my list I want to see.
And hopefully on a random night off on a Monday night, I'll be able to do that.
And certainly when we finish our run, I'll be seeing all the shows on my book list.
Always great to see you. Congratulations again.
Thank you so much.
