Eugen Franz, Prince of Savoy (18 October 1663 - 21 April 1736), was one of the most important generals of the Habsburg Empire, whose position with great power he significantly expanded. In the war against the Ottomans (1714-1718) he secured the Austrian supremacy in Southeastern Europe. In addition, he exercised in other high state offices. As a builder and art collector, he was one of the most important patrons of his time. After the purchase of this property outside the city wall, he first constructed the "french garden", and commissioned the famous Baroque architect Lucas von Hildebrandt (see also Baroque in the Wachau) to build his summer residence: the "Lower Belvedere" (1714). The "Upper Belvedere", was then added as a palace for his festivals, receptions and political activities in 1720. After his death, his heiress, Victoria Princess of Savoy, sold all the estates of Prince Eugen to the House of Habsburg (also "Schloss Hof", his hunting lodge, built in 1725). Therefore, it is not surprising that under Josef the IInd of Habsburg - Lorraine the "Upper Belvedere" became a public art gallery. Today, the "Lower" - and the "Upper Belvedere" are museums. The "Upper Belvedere" is with its "Klimt collection", especially with the image "The Kiss" a special magnet for tourists. The whole area (both castles with the garden) and also the view - "nomen est omen" - over Vienna are today UNESCO - world cultural heritage.
