It's messy, it's noisy, but it's local.
Man, that's good beer.
It's our second night in Hong Kong,
and I'm looking to find out how locals here
unwind, kick back, get their beer and food fix.
Tonight, we hit up two local spots
with decidedly different vibes.
Places that we thought would challenge us,
bring us out of our comfort zones,
and help us grow as people and travelers.
If you watch our videos, you have to know
comfort is not our style.
Let's dive in.
So where would a Hong Konger go
to kick off a night of good food with drinks?
Enter CFCs, Hong Kong's unique street food mega buildings.
Usually reserved for locals
and more experienced Hong Kong travelers,
CFCs, or cooked food centers,
were built in the 1970s to clean up the street vendors
as the economy began to boom.
Basically, wet markets were moved indoors
on the first floor of these massive buildings,
and street vendors were given the upper floors
to sell their dishes in a cleaner environment.
Now, there are iconic, albeit somewhat hidden zones
to find some of the best casual street food in Hong Kong.
Today, we're heading to the Pei Ho CFC in Sham Shui Po.
Opened in 1973 and famous
for its true-to-style local vibes.
Oh, thank you.
Wow, that's good.
Oh, she's so sweet.
Pig feet, steamed.
Let me try it without any sauce.
It's like just really strong black pepper.
Man, that's good.
It's so noisy in here.
It's crazy.
Oh.
Oh, ****, that's amazing.
Man, that's good beer.
This is very good.
It's good with beer.
It feels like a beer snack, for sure.
Wow, the cumin.
Oh, thank you.
Oh, the smell, Courtney.
Try this, smell this.
Wow.
Deep-fried pork ribs.
That looks awesome.
Dude, we got steamed pig trotters,
deep-fried, I've never had deep-fried pork ribs with cumin.
This is a revelation.
Korean people would love this.
This is a dish-over.
She gives me a thumbs-up like she's encouraging us
for being here.
But she's sweet.
I'm growing, I'm getting the vibe now.
It's a local vibe.
And this beer is really good.
Beautiful food.
That's beer food.
Yeah, wow, it smells so good.
Oh my God, that chicken smells so good.
I love that mara-mara.
Here's what's, when we ordered,
he said, do you want the small size?
I said, the small size.
This fried chicken might be my favorite thing.
Being uncomfortable with me.
It's just perfect, like this is a perfect beer food.
In my mind, this is like perfect beer food.
Wow, holy shit.
This might be the first place I've been in Hong Kong
where we might be the only tourists in here.
I don't see any tourists in here, do you?
Another beer, baby.
It's messy, it's noisy, but it's local.
That's what I like about Hong Kong.
That's what I like about it.
This is Hong Kong for sure.
So crispy and so perfectly fried.
Wow, wow, that beer is good.
This, this deep fried pork rib is amazing.
Wow, that cumin, with beer.
Deep fried galbi.
All the blogs of like people who live here
that talk about these food centers,
they always talk about how tourists never come here.
This is amazing Hong Kong cultural experience.
We entered, this was the most uncomfortable I felt
since we came to Hong Kong,
but once the waiter came,
I didn't feel uncomfortable anymore.
He said, like, can I help you with anything?
Like, he was gonna answer questions.
Like, I mean, but there are families here
and grandmas here, I don't wanna say that,
but it is overwhelmingly like old men, old Hong Kong men.
This is amazing.
Yeah, more beer?
Yeah.
Dude, she's so sweet.
Do you see her smile?
Yeah, I love her.
I'm not gonna lie, I kind of, when we first came,
before the waiter came, I wanted to leave a little bit.
Like, in my mind, I was like, I'm not comfortable,
I wanna go.
And then it changed when the server came
and the attitude was like,
I could feel that there was no animosity
that we were sitting here at all.
Because he didn't say, what do you wanna order?
He said, can I help you at all?
Like, he knew we were confused.
He could tell we didn't know what to do.
Honestly, it's this meal tonight,
it's almost like a lesson learned.
Honestly, this meal is making me fall more in love
with Hong Kong because I do feel like an intruder,
but at the same time, they don't care.
But there's, like, they're happy
that I'm intruding on their party.
Whereas I've been in countries
where that's not the case at all.
But in a country like this, where I am a tourist,
I am a fat American tourist, we intrude
and I don't know how to feel
until a sweet, kind gentleman offers to help.
This meal was kind of like a learning moment for me.
I don't know how to feel about it.
It's like an emotional process, I guess.
Stopped ranting now and I mean, it's an interesting thing.
After drinking many bottles of beer, talking,
we realized we had a choice to make.
Either order one more dish here
or move on to the next place.
Well, luckily, I heard of a legendary noodle shop
not too far away, it's open until 4 a.m.
A joint practically built for the drunken stupor
of a younger crowd to have a heaping bowl
of oily broth and noodles to stave off
the hangover pangs the next morning.
This, my friends, is Man Ki Cart Noodle.
Get in line and tell them what you want.
Use your noodle, your protein, your veggies, your broth.
Seriously, this is like the drunken noodle version
of ordering a Subway sandwich in Hong Kong.
After countless bottles of beer, I was ready.
There's ours.
Hello, I'll get a chicken with two and this one.
Okay, beef, yeah?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Beef, you have beef?
Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And this one.
Yeah, fish balls.
That's good, that's good, thank you.
Dude, it looks so good.
Dude, this is a greasy bowl of really tight hangover good.
Very good.
This is good?
Okay.
This one?
This one, garlic.
Oh, nice.
Okay.
And this one is the garlic oil.
Okay.
It's really good for the noodle.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, I'm gonna try that.
You want some spring onion?
Oh, sure, yeah, sure.
Thank you.
Garlic, garlic oil.
Oh my God, it's greasy.
With the garlic, with the garlic.
Wow.
So good, very delicious.
Yeah, amazing.
Thank you so much.
More flavor.
Level up.
Yeah, yeah.
You can see why this is a 4 a.m. place.
This is like end of the night.
Kill your hangover place.
Mm.
I don't know what this is, but it's good.
Good place though, right?
4 a.m.?
This would be like late night drinking
before you go home and stop drinking.
Very cool.
