In this freestyle ski tutorial, I teach Nico an intermediate skier plus camp guest how to slide rails on skis. I strongly recommend you first learn to slide flat boxes from the video below or join a camp and we will teach you a similar progression.
G'day fellow skiers, today I've been teaching one of our camp guests, Niko, how to slide tubes.
How has it been for you?
Well, quite challenging.
The biggest challenge actually is to overcome your fear and just to go for it and stop thinking
too much and focus only on one thing and then eventually it starts going well.
Good.
So let's watch what we've been doing now.
I need it to land perfect.
Like, removing the weight from the front leg, with the hands down and pretty low.
Pretty good, but a little wonky.
So wind up.
Oh, do you see how much weight you have there?
So you have to extend that leg and bend the front leg a little bit.
So you end up more perpendicular.
Try one more time.
Ah, way better.
Do you feel okay?
Yeah.
You're a wild man.
As you approach the rail, have a gentle amount of wind up.
Then you release it as you pop.
As you notice here, I didn't fully extend the legs, but that's fine.
You don't want to be too high up in the air.
Land on the rail perpendicular to it, so that you have a fair amount of pressure on the front foot.
Then you can drop the heel of the front foot down, set off the rotation to straight again.
Good luck.
Good try.
Nice save there.
How could you have done that better?
I don't know, it was too quick.
It was too quick?
It just happened in your head?
A tip, if you feel that way, next time, really visualize before you drop in.
And think about how you're going to pop and what it's going to feel like.
Because then you can do it in slow motion.
And then you'll be more ready and the time will flow a little bit slower in reality next time.
Good one.
I could tell you weren't really visualizing.
Yeah, you might be right.
So this is how I do it.
It's on this tube.
Now I'm closing my eyes.
I'm picturing how I'm skiing in towards the tube.
Arms are far out, I wind up.
Have a nice pop.
I rotate with the whole body, 90 degrees on it.
Boom, I land and I look at the end of the feature.
Pop off.
So that took like five times as long time at least as doing it.
Did you close your eyes with me there?
No.
Okay, you try it now and then you go.
Good luck.
So reality versus visualization, which one was better?
Both were shit.
Because if you can't do it in the mind, you can't do it in reality.
So we got a similar feature here.
I'll try it one more time.
Can you try correcting the mistake you did there in your mind?
Do you know what the mistake was?
Put too much pressure on the back.
Yeah, it's the same thing.
You just learn kind of straight up.
I need you to move so you become more perpendicular.
You got to roll that knee forward.
I believe in you.
I think you'll get the next one.
Okay.
If you get it right in your brain first.
Do you also want to come and crash on your hip like Nico did?
Sign up in the link in the description.
See you then.
Ciao.
Yes.
So good.
So that went pretty well.
Yeah.
Check it out.
It's a wider stance that's saving you.
Can you see that you're still like a little bit heavy on the back leg?
Really well done.
First of all, in the pop, you don't need to sink down so deep.
A little quick tip on sliding steeper boxes, tubes, and rails.
Is that almost everyone, it's human nature to always stay vertical.
And when we slide boxes, tubes, rails, all of that good stuff.
We got to overcome that and commit down the hill.
I chuck that edge into the snow there.
And if you check this out.
This is the position I want to have.
So that the legs are both about evenly bent.
Because if you stand like this with a really bent uphill leg.
The likelihood of falling over on the hip is massive.
So what you want to do is that you bend the front leg.
And extend the uphill leg.
Until you reach this cool position here.
And then you will just slide away.
Since Nico is struggling a little bit with the position.
I'm pulling him to step onto it.
Because then you can really feel that position where you're perpendicular to the rail.
Pretty good.
Yeah.
How do you feel?
Good.
I think you were better that way.
But you kind of had the feet too far forward.
So you're a little bit on the toilet like such.
But otherwise, pretty good with the balance there.
Yeah.
Happy.
When there's a gap onto a box like this.
It can help you to feel safer and also do it kind of right.
By lifting the nose.
If you think you want to lift the toes inside of your boots.
You're a little bit less likely to pop off the noses.
And dive them down into the box and cause a nasty crash.
Just have that in mind.
And then you can wind up lifting the toes.
Thank you for coming on the show and learning in front of all of you.
Thank you for the excellent coaching you did.
Yeah, dude. No worries.
And give it a like and subscribe.
And we'll see you in the next video.
