Game Over! NASA SLS is in Big Problem'', even Lunar Gateway...
The era of the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, and NASA's Lunar Gateway dream seems to have reached its bitter end.
Recently, the Trump administration released a "skinny" version of the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026. As predicted earlier, funding for some of NASA's expensive programs which had once devoured tens of billions of dollars each year is now facing a death sentence: ruthlessly cut and even completely eliminated.
So, what will be the future of the Moon mission?
Will Starship be a useful solution for NASA?
Let’s find out on today’s episode of Alpha Tech:

Released on May 2 by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the preliminary “skinny” budget allocates $18.8 billion for NASA equivalent to NASA’s 1980 budget ($18.925 billion adjusted for inflation) representing a nearly 25% reduction from the $24.9 billion appropriated in the fiscal year 2025 continuing resolution. While the proposal offers high-level funding details, a comprehensive budget is expected later in May.
NASA’s acting Administrator, Janet Petro, emphasized the agency’s commitment to its mission despite the cuts. “This proposal balances investments in lunar and Mars exploration with critical science and technology research,” Petro said in a statement. “I’m grateful for the President’s support and eager to collaborate with the administration and Congress to advance NASA’s ambitious goals.”

The budget prioritizes human missions to the Moon and Mars, with over $7 billion allocated for lunar exploration and $1 billion in new funding for Mars-focused programs. A key objective, as stated in an accompanying fact sheet, is to “refocus NASA funding on beating China back to the Moon and putting the first human on Mars,” ensuring U.S. leadership in space exploration through innovative and cost-efficient approaches.
However, NASA is also facing deep cuts and the cancellation of many programs within its “Moon to Mars” and science initiatives.
Let’s take a closer look at the budget allocation.
