Chaos and power outages in Moscow region due to unprecedented May snowfall

A heavy snowfall hit Moscow and the Moscow Region (Russia) in early May. 237 power lines were without power in the region, the regional governor reported. The most difficult situation is in the north of the Moscow Region, where a number of settlements are experiencing power and transport outages. As a result of the snowfall, ice formed on the wires and a large number of trees fell.
Restoration work is currently underway in 11 urban districts of the Moscow Region. These include Klinsky, Dmitrovsky, Pushkinsky, Sergiev Posadsky, Mytishchi, Khimki, Krasnogorsk and others. Experts have adjusted the forecast for the restoration time. Most of the de-energized houses will have electricity back by the end of this day. At the same time, there is power in almost all social institutions. Very often, repair crews have difficulty getting to the places where the accidents occurred.
This has become the largest accident in the region over the past 15 years. The consequences are comparable to the damage from the freezing rain in 2011. Some lines have to be built anew rather than restored. The inaccessibility of the sections creates additional difficulties.
Currently, more than 200 emergency crews are working in the Moscow region, eliminating the consequences of the bad weather, clearing roads and railway tracks. The most difficult situation remains on the Rizhskoye and Savelovsky railway lines, where train traffic has been suspended.
The regional authorities are monitoring the situation and urging residents to exercise caution.
