Once upon a time in a sunny meadow filled with wildflowers and whispering winds, lived a busy
little ant and a cheerful grasshopper. All summer long, the ant worked hard. She marched
back and forth from her tiny hill, carrying seeds, crumbs and bits of food to store for
the cold winter ahead. She hummed a quiet little tune as she worked, her heart full
of purpose. Nearby, the grasshopper played his fiddle in the sun.
Come dance with me, ant, he laughed. But the ant shook her head kindly. I'd love to, but
winter will be here before we know it.
Every day the ant worked. Every day the grasshopper played. He bounced in the tall grass, sang
with the breeze and said, there's plenty of time to worry later. But soon the wind
grew chilly. Leaves turned golden and drifted from the trees. The grasshopper stopped playing,
his belly rumbled and snow began to fall. He hopped to the ant's little hill, shivering
and tired.
Ant, he said softly, I didn't get ready for winter. I'm cold and hungry. May I come in?
The ant looked at him for a moment, then smiled. Come inside. There's always room for a friend.
She shared her warm home and her food. The grasshopper learned to be grateful. And the
next summer he still played his fiddle. But he also helped the ant gather food.
They worked and played together. And when winter came again, they were both ready.
And every night, as snow gently fell, they sat by a tiny fire, sipping tea and humming
to the music of the fiddle.
