Aishwarya Rai Bachchan talks to Attika Choudhary about being a L'Oreal Ambassador, her many years being in Cannes and her latest film, releasing worldwide 'Sarbjit', (May 20). Find out Ash's favourite places in Cannes. Shot at the Hyatt Martinez, Cannes.
We're at the Martinez Hotel with AsianCultureVulture.com in association with E-Shopping Center for
the Cannes Film Festival 2016.
Hey guys, so we are with the beautiful Aishwarya Rai. She is in Cannes 2016 and she is part
of the laureate, well she is a laureate ambassador and as I know apparently she was the first
laureate ambassador. So let's find out how long has Aishwarya been coming to Cannes because
it's been a while and I was trying to figure out actually. How long have you been coming here?
You know, I stopped counting at some point in time but L'Oreal very sweetly reminded
me this year that it's 15 years with them.
Has it really been 15?
15 with L'Oreal and then I had come a year before with a movie with Devdas and then my
first year also as the jury member. So it's been a while.
Now, I was thinking what do I not know about Aishwarya Rai in Cannes because obviously
15 years is a long time and I want to visit some of the favourite places of Aishwarya
in Cannes. So tell me some of your favourite places I can go later on to see in Cannes.
Well, my visits have been obviously planned and organised. So not exactly the kind of
places you are looking for.
No.
But the beach is always great. The Palais for cinema and I mean there are lots of other
theatres as well but I've been spoilt with a lot of great cinema at the Palais, at the
theatres there and great dining spots, I mean great food.
So where do you like to eat?
And great ice cream.
Okay, I'm going to have some.
So yeah, and super bread. Yeah, I say all the wrong things for someone from showbiz
but you come here and you've got to enjoy the croissants and the bread. It's delicious.
You've got to eat food, you have to enjoy food. I'm sure in your modelling days you had to sort of...
I have, no. I've always enjoyed it. I've been a foodie. I've never been one who's...
I'm not a deprived soul when it comes to food.
No. So obviously you are here for L'Oreal. Now obviously you have your favourite make-up
brand. Every artist loves to have her favourite things in her purse. So when you're going
to the red carpet, what do you pack?
Well, again here when it comes to the red carpet, I'm spoiled by the best of the business.
I mean Charlotte is great with what she does for me. And she's really enjoyed her art
with me I think over the years where she's put them all out. Different combinations,
the kind of colours. Sometimes I wouldn't even... I'd wonder if it could be too much
or too different. And it just has evoked a wow every time. So I think she's... I'm secure.
Yeah.
She's brilliant. So that's kind of handled. Stefan is great with hair. That's handled.
So I really don't need to pack anything for my prep in terms of the red carpet.
But having said that, I am an actor. I am a L'Oreal brand ambassador. And I am a girl.
So I do love my mascara. I do love my skin care in terms of cleansers and moisturisers
and face wash. That's kind of... Hygiene is very, very important to me. I love this oil.
This is like really, really nice.
Really? Is that why I should use it?
Elnit is great. Elnit is just a fabulous spray. So that kind of works to keep it all in place.
Yeah. That's why you have amazing hair.
And a balm or lip colour.
Yeah.
I think mascara, lip colour, a little bit of concealer is always good.
That's your favourite.
That's kind of set. You've got the basics in place and get on with the day.
Sure. Let's move over to something a bit more serious because you're currently working on...
Well, you've actually just finished and it's out this week. And you play a very interesting role.
A sister of his. Tell us a bit about this film.
None of this as Dalbirji. None of this. That isn't the kind of cinema at all.
But again, there is a lot of use of makeup. But to create the character.
Because I age a lot through the films. So I'm just talking about the visual now
since we're in the context of the external appearance.
So there's a lot of use of makeup even for that. That's why in an artist or an actor's life,
makeup has a different value. It's not just about putting on colour for the day.
It's something that I really respect because it helps me create who I become
for a particular story or piece of cinema.
It's a story in a film where you cannot turn around and say,
Oh, I had pleasure essaying this part because there's nothing pleasurable about it.
It's a very sad story. It's reality. It's not fictional.
And so you feel an immense sense of responsibility depicting and telling the story
because I think the most gratifying moment was when Dalbirji felt
when she viewed the movie in the rushes and she said,
I felt it was me and that is our story.
And that was extremely important to me individually and to the team
that Dalbirji feels that such a sensitive chapter and sensitive aspect of her life,
their life, her brother's story be validated when eventually shared with the rest of the world.
So that to me was extremely precious as the actor on the film.
For 23 years, she struggled to try and bring her brother back.
And even after that, he was murdered at the end of it and she brought him back but not alive.
It took her 18 years to meet him the first time.
We also want to talk about hope because a lot of people,
when you are faced with situations that seem impossible, you can feel crushed.
Your spirit can be crushed and you can be bogged down and actually just give up.
She didn't. And I think that's a great message
because after 18 years, she did get to meet her brother.
She did get to go in and she took his wife and children there as well,
which holds immense meaning to them in the real picture.
Is that the Aishwarya Rai who doesn't give up and hope?
I guess we have that in common.
And at the end of 23 years, even though her reality was that she couldn't bring Sarbjit back alive,
even when you meet her to this day, there is an incredible light to this lady.
And here she is still continuing to work to give hope to other people
and to work for prisoners of war even in India.
The Pakistani boys or people who may be here in our prisons
and likewise the Indians in Pakistan, which is a huge positive message.
And I think it's a great reflection of a soul who didn't get embittered by her own reality.
And when you meet her, you see that.
You get to experience her strength and her light.
And yet there is a smile, there is a pleasantness to her personality
and incredible strength to her voice.
And I'd say I'm honoured to have had the opportunity to essay this spirit.
You got to listen to the female voice and the impact we do have
and we seek to strengthen in industries all over the world
and as well as on such platforms where our cinema is exchanged and shared with the global market.
So that's something which is ongoing and hopefully not too far ahead
where the larger change is seeping in, but seeping.
Everyone's waiting for the tide.
Aishwarya, thank you so much for joining us.
It was a pleasure to see you again.
All the best, looking fabulous.
Thank you.
Can't wait to see you on the red carpet.
Thank you so much.
