TRUCK CAMPING in Real SASQUATCH COUNTRY | The LOST Coast & Humbolt Redwoods | Van Life

On the road again, folks.
I'm about two hours south of the city of Reno, Nevada,
which used to be known as, or probably still is known as,
the biggest little city in America.
However, I don't think it's very little anymore.
I will be meeting up with a friend there
who will be joining me on my next couple of adventures,
which I'm very excited about.
It's a beautiful bluebird day
with snow-capped mountains all around.
I am currently on the 395 North in California.
My route took me through the historic little town
of Gardnerville, which I found very charming and quaint.
I love driving through these old towns of the West.
To me, the drive is just as much a part of the adventure
as the destination.
Pick this guy up in Reno, woo-hoo!
To the coast of Miss Catherine.
What happens?
We were about to head over Donner Pass,
named after the Donner Party,
who were a group of American pioneers
who migrated to California
in a wagon train from the Midwest.
Delayed by a multitude of mishaps,
they spent the winter of 1846 and 1847
snowbound in the Sierra Nevada,
and they had to resort to some pretty drastic measures
for survival.
I recommend looking up the story
if you haven't heard it yourself.
We were rolling into camp just before sundown
at the Richardson Grove Campground in Humboldt County,
which we found had first-come, first-served camping.
Wow, this trunk looks crazy
because it looks like it's twisted all the way up.
Well, good morning.
Just sitting here enjoying my coffee
next to a ginormous redwood tree.
And believe it or not, this is not even that big
in comparison to some of the ones that are around here.
So, I'm gonna go ahead and get some coffee
There are huge, huge trees here.
This place is so beautiful.
It is known as the Emerald Triangle,
and that consists of Trinity, Humboldt,
and Mendocino counties.
It is definitely Squatch country, as in Sasquatch.
I mean, if Sasquatch does exist and lives someplace,
this would be a place where it would live, for sure.
Just driving down the roads,
I always expect to see one running across the road
or coming out from behind one of these trees.
So, who knows?
Fingers crossed, maybe this will be the time
I finally see Sasquatch.
This is the Richardson Grove Campground.
It's a California state park.
We rolled in last night, and actually coming here
was a completely last-minute decision.
And that's one of the beautiful things about this lifestyle
is you can just pick up and go on a whim.
And this was certainly on a whim.
I did not expect to be here.
I did not expect to drive this far yesterday.
I wasn't planning on coming all the way here
to Humboldt County.
We thought we would stop and camp along the way,
but I felt pretty good,
and we still had a lot of daylight left,
so we rolled in here, but we got here just at sunset.
So that's why I didn't really film anything last night,
because not only is it dark in here during the day
under the canopy of these trees,
but it was really dark last night.
The reason that we're in this area
is we plan to do some backpacking.
That won't happen in this video.
This video, we're just gonna explore the redwoods.
We may go to the ocean.
I wanna take you to a charming town
a little bit north of here,
and then maybe a little hike
through some of these ancient redwood trees
and kind of explore the area.
Anyhow, I think we're gonna get packed up
and get ready to roll.
What better place is there to start the day
with my favorite emerald drink
than in the Emerald Triangle of California?

We've just driven the Avenue of the Giants,
or a small portion of it,
and the thing that you can't grasp
is the scale of these trees.
Unless you have somebody standing right next to one,
you really cannot see how large they are.
They're just ginormous.
We are parked here at the visitor center,
and we're going to do a little hike here
through the redwood trees.
We paid for the state park camping yesterday,
so you are able to visit any state park,
and I think that's anywhere in California,
until sundown tonight,
and using that same permit that we got for the camping.
So for that fee, which was $35,
we can visit any of the state parks nearby,
or anywhere that we would be able to drive to,
and visit before sundown tonight.
Many of the coast redwoods grow over 300 feet in height.
Over 100 of the 137 known trees over 350 feet tall,
all coast redwoods occur in Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
It is home to the fourth tallest measured living redwood.
I'm going to take a little walk down to the Eel River here.
We're making a stop here
in the very charming tiny town of Miranda.
I've stopped through here every time
that I've been in this area to eat at the Avenue Cafe.
The food is amazing, they make amazing pizzas.
Everything I've had there has been very good,
and it's very squatch friendly,
and it's hearty here.
