Debussy wrote this waltz in 1910, which does not really fit into the composer's stylistic development. It tends too much towards salon music to be harmonised with the other works of these years, especially the demanding first volume of the Préludes. At most, his early piano pieces can be regarded as salon music.

Debussy's humour
It can be assumed that Debussy was not entirely serious about this composition. Debussy's humour, which can be found again and again in his work - for example in the middle section of Golliwog's Cakewalk from Children's Corner - is quite close to satire. Even the title of ‘La plus que lente’ hints at this. A ‘valse lente’, a slow waltz, was very popular with listeners and dancers alike at the time and was renamed ‘La plus que lente’ by Debussy, meaning ‘the slowest (waltz)’.

A further reference can be found in the version for salon orchestra that Debussy himself made. He himself described this orchestration as ‘à la Bierstube’.

There are also several indications in the musical text itself that this is primarily a parody. The conspicuous accumulation of rubato writing, ritardandi and the like is reminiscent of salon music composed in the Romantic spirit. Debussy also winks, so to speak, in the theme itself.
