Hello and welcome
In today's video, I'm going to talk about the new Leica M11-P
Yeah, a digital camera
Before I get started, just a heads up
This is not going to be a review on the camera itself
I'm pretty sure there's other people out there who will do a really good job at that
But it's more about my personal experiences with it and why I currently have one
Now, for those of you who know me
You'll know that I don't really use digital cameras for taking photographs
I've been shooting film for exclusively 7 years now
And it feels like it's the only thing that works for me
Obviously, I own a digital camera
Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to film all these videos or digitize negatives
But I don't really use a digital camera to take photos
I've been thinking about how to structure this video
And I assume I will scare off a few keyboard warriors slash tech nerds
Who got super excited about the M11-P
But what I really wanted to talk about was why I currently have an M11-P
And how it might make sense in an analog way
So a while ago, there was this exhibition in Vienna
It was called Mining Photography
And it talks about the cost of photography and its ecological footprint
Before digital photography
The photo industry was obviously all analog
And that meant the demand for photosensitive materials
Raw materials and chemicals was incredibly high
There was a time where Kodak was actually one of the biggest consumers of silver
And they even had their own cattle farms to keep up with the high demand of gelatin
The question that I asked myself is
Even though film is a niche today and the ecological footprint is much smaller
Compared to 50 years ago
I was wondering can I still go on shooting film today
And obviously this is a really big question
And I haven't been able to figure out an answer for myself just yet
The reason that I started thinking about this was
That I was faced with the decision that in 2024
I would be photographing a pretty large photo documentary
And for the first time, I was thinking about doing all of this digitally
Rather than on film
Now in terms of ecological footprint
Digital cameras still produce a lot of waste
Especially the production and lifespan of batteries
And then if you take into consideration
That a lot of people buy new digital cameras every 6 months or every year
Just like people buy the new iPhone every time it comes out
One of the main reasons why I use film as my medium in photography
Is the tactile experience that comes with it
I consider myself a printmaker just as much as a photographer
Because whether it's developing paper in photochemicals
Or typing on a typewriter
I want to work with something that's tangible
Taking into account the ecological footprint of this though
Is definitely a bigger topic
One of the issues I had with digital photography
And that's probably something that I'll always have to some extent
Was that all my images, they just sit on a hard drive
And even if they were printed out
They were kind of just numbers to me
It almost seemed unholy
Now at this point of the video
Some of you might be nodding and agreeing
With some of the points that I'm making
That these things about film
Are all things to take into consideration
Even though it's a niche
Some of you might be upset
Because I haven't talked about the M11P enough
But stick with me just for a bit more
The reason why I never really could express myself
With digital photography was
I never thought that it was something bad
Or something that has no place in this world
It's just not something that's for me personally
But ever since I got the M11P
I started thinking slightly different about all of this
The big feature of the M11P
Apart from all the photographic things that it can do
Is something called content authentication
Which essentially means that you have a feature
That when you take a photograph
There is a signature that's embedded into the file
That kind of proves that
That photo was really taken
And I guess this is here to counteract against
Things like producing images with an AI
This means that you kind of have something
Like an original
Which is almost like a negative
And I know you can make copies of negatives
But I guess it's a cool attempt to go into the direction
Of producing something that's authentic
In a world where we kind of need
Authentic things right now
Another thing that I find really cool
Is that the M11P
And I think the M11 also had that
Has built-in storage
And that really is either great for
Either having a backup
Or if you just forget to take an SD card
You just take photos directly onto the camera
I think that's pretty forward thinking as well
So that's very nice
Something that actually caught me quite off guard
While using the M11P
Was having to switch on the camera to use it
And the lag time
It took until it was ready to actually take a photo
Obviously someone who isn't used to
Taking photos with a digital camera
Might stumble with this
But I assume that
If you are like a pro street photographer
And you use a digital camera
Then you probably just have your camera on all the time
And all the power saving settings are off
So your camera is just always ready to go
But it was funny
Because it really did catch me off guard
And there were a few shots
That I literally couldn't take
Because I was just waiting for the camera
To switch on
Again, one of those things
If you shoot digital
You're just gonna shake your head at this
But one of the things that I enjoyed so much
About the M11P
Was that I simply could switch
From black and white to color at any instant
I know this might sound bizarre
To people who shoot digital
But when you only take photographs on film
The choice between black and white and color
Is quite a constraint
I can't just switch films as I feel like
Unless I carry more than one camera body
Of course
And just being able to do that
Just being able to take a photo
And then think
I don't know
Maybe it would have been nicer
In black and white or whatever
That was kind of interesting
Because the thought process behind it
Changed completely
And I don't really know
If having constraints is sometimes a good thing
Or sometimes it's a bad thing
But this was definitely an opportunity for me
To kind of get rid of all these constraints
For most of my work
I use my film Leica M
Because I really appreciate
The lenses that come with it
Especially the early 35mm semi-lux
Which was my first lens
That I had on my M
And then the 50mm Summicron dual range
Which has this beautiful close focusing feature
And I just really enjoy these two lenses
Now obviously
Because these lenses are old film lenses
All their characteristics shine on film
But they kind of seem like flaws on digital
Ultimately I don't really have much to compare
To the M11P
Because the last camera that I actively used
The last digital camera that I actively used
For taking photographs
Was the Canon 5D Mark III
And that was a completely different approach
To photography
And I kind of miss that actually
It was a really great camera
And it always reminds me of the digital rev days
With Kai and Locke
And some really good memories with that thing
But anyways
The Sony A7 III that I use
I use for making YouTube videos
And I use it for digitizing my negatives
With my Valois setup
And I don't really use it for taking photographs
Because there just isn't anything great
To the camera to take photos
It's not very inspiring as a tool
And obviously some people might disagree on that
But it just never really worked for me
And all the other digital cameras that I used
The whole workflow
It just did not seem right
Now the project that I mentioned
That will happen in 2024
Will be a large photo documentary
And my key concern is
It will probably be completely crazy
To shoot it all on film
Because it will be something like
50 rolls per week if not more
And yeah
That's gonna get really expensive
Given the price of the M11P
Which is currently I think around 9000 euros
Maybe it's just a bit more
I could buy around 700 rolls of Tri-X
For the same price
And 700 rolls is approximately
What I shoot in the span of 4 years
So I guess it's a bit
You gotta weigh your odds
And see what kind of works for you
But it's also an interesting thing to think about
Now obviously the Leica M11
And all the other Leica M bodies
Are extremely expensive
Compared to normal digital cameras
But all of this got me thinking about
Cameras like the Leica M8 or the M9
Which have all sensors
But really render colors very nicely
Completely different to
The overengineered cameras
That are coming out today
Or at least it seems like that to me
At the end of the day
The thoughts that I'm having
Aren't only about
The ecological footprint of film
And the rising prices of film for example
Or the ecological footprint of digital cameras
It's more about
How much do I still want to invest
Into photography
On a monetary way of course
Now in my head
Most of these questions distill into
What does photography mean to me
And I think that would catapult this video
In a completely different section
So I'm just gonna leave that be for now
So before I end this video
I want to mention a few things
That I really enjoyed
In the couple of weeks
That I've been able to use the M11P
I pretty much actually enjoyed
Taking photos with it
Especially because it's an M system
And that's a system
That I know very well
Even for me who has long been
Out of the loop of digital cameras
I didn't have to do much apart from
Adjust the metering mode
To highlight weighted
And perhaps reduce the EV to minus 1
Or sometimes even minus 2
And I've been taking photos in RAW
With JPEG
And I've really just been using
The JPEG files for most of the time
Another thing that I really enjoyed
Was that I was able to take
Photos of things that
Aren't actually so easy to take on film
Like the night sky
In the Austrian countryside
Or just use the live view
To get into places
Where I usually might miss the framing
With a film camera
Now the afterthought of the M11P
For me is that
It's an insane camera
The image quality is superb
And having the choice between
I think 16, 30 and 60 megapixels
Is extremely useful
The fact that I can attach
My current M lenses onto the M11P
Means that I would actually save some money
If I happen to buy one
Because I wouldn't have to buy a new lens
But because of its modern sensor
My old lenses would be put into a test
That they really weren't meant to withstand
So for someone who really enjoys grain
Or wants to project their slides onto a wall
And wants to see prints come out of nothingness
In a bath of chemicals
Then the M11P might make me feel like
Something is missing
The thought that I've had since quite a while
And that'll be the last thing that I say in this video
Is how many more technological advances
Will photography need
A good 35mm negative
Will yield an 8x10 inch print
It is actually big enough to
Just hold with both hands in front of you
There's enough detail in there
To see everything sharp
And the grain just adds a lot of
Beauty and texture
To the actual print
And the photograph itself
So where will our technological innovation
In photography lead to
Just recently
The newest iPhone came out
With the top of the line model
Having a 48 megapixel sensor
48 megapixels in your pocket
What'll be next
My old mentor actually told me that
The future of wedding photography
Will probably be taken over by drones
That are AI controlled
And will just hover around the entire event
Taking photos of everything
Filming everything
And compiling all of that
Into perfect results
It's a scary thought to think of photography
Turning into this pinnacle of perfection
If that's what you want to call it
That we won't have to intervene with anything
That we won't need to learn anything
Or have any sort of skills
But technology will just completely take over
And finally that makes me wonder
Does all this innovation
And all this technological power
Truly benefit us
Or is it just a way to make money
Thanks for watching
Take care
