Fuji X10
Leica X2
Ricoh GR
或Nikon Coolpix A
Olympus VF2
Shink
你可以
Shink
Leica SF-24D
EVF
來自Olympus
Voodoo Magic
I use all those modes and we'll kind of get into why
For color, there are a few options in here as well
There are standard, vivid, natural, black and white natural and black and white contrast, high contrast
And then there are five levels within each setting of adjustment for sharpening, saturation and contrast
And now for what makes this camera a Leica
It is a wonderfully stripped down compact
That comes down to straightforward controls with physical dials, a minimal menu and a killer lens
This lens is really nice
And this is not a partnered with Panasonic kind of a Leica lens that you would find on the LX3 that I reviewed and love so dearly
This feels like a genuine, true, all Leica contraption
And in that regard, it is very unique
However, when I looked up the images for this camera on Flickr and DP review to see sample images
I was super honestly underwhelmed with what I saw
Nothing about the images really struck me as special or unique
Not the color, not the rendering
So I kind of felt like, I don't think this is going to be a great camera
But I ordered it anyway
I was definitely concerned
I was basically just getting a Sony NEX camera from like the mid 2000s
I do think that this camera probably shares the same sensor with one of the NEX cameras to be honest
Like a Sony early sensor
And it's not a fact, it's just a feeling
I say that because of some of the way that I see color rendered in this sensor with some of the greens and the yellows
I've read that some people prefer the image quality out of the X1
I cannot say that I know anything about the X1
I do know that the X1 does not take the EVF, which was really important to me
I also know that the focus on the X1 was supposed to be like abominable, like unusable
But again, I have no experience with the X1
So if you do, I would love your thoughts below
Especially if you shot both
Because I'm really curious about the X1 now, of course
I do love how the X2 looks and feels in terms of the ergonomics
It's just a wonderful camera to use
Again, it's just very simple, very streamlined
I love just shooting as completely all manual with these shutter speed dials and aperture dials
And then just my ISO is one button on the back that I can shift
Has manual focus and I actually use that a lot on this
Now it's not manual focus on the lens
Which I think is a huge mess
I don't know why
I guess just from an engineering standpoint, that was too hard
But it's available on the Nikon Coolpix-A
Which is a similar 28mm field of view compact
That came out around the same time
Or a bit later, I guess
But I just wish that the manual focus was physical
It's not though
It's something that you do as a wheel on the back here
Other ergos though
It is very compact
Much more compact than some of the other 35mm equivalent sort of compacts out there
Like the Fuji X100V
It is really nice to hold
But if I want to hold this one handed
And really shoot this one handed
Which I experienced first hand
When I first was using this with my girls
I really do appreciate the grip
The grip helps a great deal with one hand hold
One hand hold ability
If that's a term
The aperture is not on the lens either
But it is a tactile experience to shoot this thing
It is light
But it does feel sturdy and robust
In terms of its build quality
It does feel tough
And there is a very nice stiffness to the dials on the top
Which apparently was not the case with the X1
So they remediated that
And it feels really good
You feel like a solid click when you're adjusting things
And that makes it very easy to do
Without looking at the dial
You know how far a stop you have gone
When you're shooting to your eye
Wonderful Barnack influence design here
Very similar to like the Leica 3F
Which is such a pretty camera
And I just love the design
It's small, simple, compact
How many more times can I say compact
It has a very nice case and strap option
There's quite a few
I have a little baggy of them here
There's just like a half case like this
Which is quite nice
A full case like so
The one that I believe
All of the cameras shipped with out of box
Was this very cool
I actually really like this
Vertical case
So you lift it up like that
And I had a battery in here
But a vertical case
And then you have your straps here
So a lot of really nice options for carrying
Protecting and keeping the camera
I love 35mm as a field of view
I have been getting wider and wider
I do really like 28mm as well
But 35mm there's just
I know it's kind of vanilla
To a lot of people
But I just really like it
It's just enough containment
To feel focused in the frame
And yet wide enough to tell a story
So I don't know
I just really like 35mm
I still gravitate towards 35mm
The lens in here is really, really good
Like it handles flaring incredibly well
It's very sharp
It does have character
But it's like, it's interesting
It's character in certain circumstances
And I do feel like
I've gotten to know this camera
I've learned how to shoot it a little better
As I've progressed with my timing on it
And yeah, I really do like the lens
The lens does not extend with the lens cap on
So like when you turn it on
You'll get a little warning sign
That prevents the lens from extending
Which I love
This is like a weird little niggle factor
That does not occur
With a lot of my older digicams
Where you have a lens cap on
And you turn it on
It like pops the whole thing off
You might damage the lens or something
This one gives you a nice little warning
Take off the lens cap please
And I will turn on
Really nice little detail
And I'm glad they did that
However, unlike the Ricoh GR series
You cannot go into playback mode
Without turning on the full camera
AKA taking the lens cap off
Extending the lens
And then going into playback mode
That is a bit of a miss to me
I wish you could just playback your images
Without that whole process
I do think there's a very nice ability
To create separation
Depth separation in certain circumstances
With your subject being
Just the right distance from the camera
It doesn't happen all the time
But you can get some nice bokeh
With this lens
Obviously it's 2.8 on an APS-C sized sensor
So it's not going to be
Like razor thin depth of field
But for me it is kind of perfect
Because I'm not that person anyway
Nice color
Which is not something
I felt right out of the box
And we'll talk about color
At the end of this and my settings
But I right out of the box
Was like very underwhelmed
By the color actually
It felt completely generic
Completely boring
You have to kind of go in
And customize it
But if you do that
The color out of the JPEGs
Can get really nice
Different than what
I would usually gravitate towards
But I've really come around
To appreciating it
And I really like it now
The black and whites however
Are fabulous
Pretty much out of the box
I do really like
The black and white settings on here
Particularly the high contrast
Black and white
Which tends to be my aesthetic
The white balance on here
Is really good in auto
It does a fantastic job
Even in kind of mixed lighting
Circumstances
So that is really great
It's remarkably good at high ISO
Not something I was expecting to see
But the high ISO performance
Is really solid
I had no issue shooting this
At 1600 ISO
I would tend to gravitate towards
Black and white for that
And I didn't really like
Going beyond 1600
But 1600 no problem
And in fact I would actually
Intentionally put this
Even in broad daylight
To 1600 ISO
For a bit of a triax look
With the files
Really nice black and white
1600 ISO shots
And also color
Did not bother me
The detail also remains
At high ISO
Which is not something
I can say for most cameras
The manual control
And manual experience
Of this camera
Has to be like the highlight though
It's so wonderful
To be able to
Control your exposure triangle
At your fingertips physically
And then auto white balance
Is the way to go
Because honestly
Like even the presets in here
For daylight and shade
And all of that
They're not really accurate
Which is weird
They create kind of like
A weird color cast in my opinion
So auto white balance
Is pretty bang on
And so I just leave that
That's the only thing
I leave to chance
And the rest
I really just love
All the manual control
That being said
If you do want to put it
Into aperture priority
Shutter priority
You can do that
And it does a great job
There are some exposure issues
That we'll cover
In kind of my cons section
But overall
Just the manual control
Is what I love the most
About this camera
I didn't get to shoot
This much on the street
But I did a little shooting
At the Santa Monica Pier
With my kids
And I really enjoyed
How this can operate
As a street camera
I think it is a killer
Street camera
If that is what you want to do
Again in that case
You're going to want to shoot
At the high F stop
And do your zone focusing
And all of that
And this then becomes
Extremely responsive
The moment you press the shutter
You have released it
You've gotten your shot
It is so fun
It has a playback histogram
So you can just make sure
That you're getting
The right exposures
It has three stops
Of exposure compensation
If you did want to shoot
In kind of like
An aperture priority fashion
And yeah
So it's a really
It can be a really great
Street camera
Someone asked how responsive
That shutter button is
Because they have the X1
And they said that the shutter
And the shutter to capture
Release sort of moment
Was not good
And their experience
Like it was really slow
Much slower they said
Than their Ricoh GR2
I've had the GR2
I have the GR3
I think the response time
On the shutter here
Is totally decent
I never even thought about it
Or considered it
As like ah crap
I've hit the shutter
And now it won't release
It's snappy
But even more so
When shooting in manual mode
Now let's get into my gripes
With this camera
Because I definitely have some
So the shutter speed
As I mentioned is
Whole stops
Full stops
No third stop
Which is kind of annoying
Because honestly
The metering on this
Kind of requires
A bit of that third stop
You can offset that
By you know
Doing your aperture
In third stops
But why not just give it
To us on both fronts
So that we can control it
A little bit more
That's kind of the appeal
Of this camera
Is the full control
Minimum focus distance
On this is not great
It's like 30 centimeters
Or roughly like 11 inches
So no macro photography
With this
But I honestly don't
Shoot anything like that anyway
So doesn't really matter to me
But might be worth mentioning
If you are that kind of shooter
It does clip highlights
So this is getting back
To the metering
It clips highlights
It tends to overexpose
For whatever reason
So even though it's a
Modernish CMOS sensor
This is still a camera
That I would recommend
Like all my older digicams
To shoot underexposed
By one third
To two third stops
It also just betters
The look of the images
Because the color
When shot straight out of the box
At you know
Zero exposure compensation
Like when it's metering properly
Is like super flat
And extremely boring
When you underexpose
A little bit
It increases the contrast
And sort of enriches
The saturation
And just makes
A better looking image
To my eye
And then that's better
To get further
By going in
And sort of customizing
Some of your color settings
In the menu
Now I did mention
That the response time
On the shutter is really decent
But it is slow to focus
This is a slow focusing camera
It is not nearly as bad
As everything that I had read
Prior to purchasing this camera
Which was just like lamenting
How bad the focus was
It's not that bad
It's perfectly fine
So let me actually just
Do this really fast
Pressing the shutter
So it takes a moment
There's a little bit of lag there
It's not the end of the world
But it is slow to focus
And worse off
It can just be weirdly
And incomprehensibly inaccurate
Even in slow circumstances
So even when I'm like
In a circumstance
Where I'm doing
Like a still life
Or a landscape
Sometimes I hit the focus
And it just doesn't acquire focus
For whatever reason
It's just kind of an odd one
Even when I think I've nailed it
There is a red or green box
On the back
When you're focusing
To show you whether
It has locked focus or not
But I just found that
In certain circumstances
That shouldn't have been hard
It didn't acquire focus
So it's kind of a little bit
Of a weird like
Kind of live with it
Kind of situation
Also auto ISO on here
Makes no sense
Like Leica
You're a street shooting camera
Like that's kind of
One of the major things
You're known for
And yet when you go into auto ISO
And you set your max shutter speed
So like or sorry
Your minimum shutter speed
The highest you can go
Is 1 30th of a second
Who shoots at 1 30th of a second
As their minimum shutter speed
I don't get it
Like I want
125th of a second
250th of a second
1 500th of a second
No all you get is
1 15th or 1 30th of a second
Makes no sense
Why they didn't correct this
In a later firmware update
Beyond me
But there you have it
But the biggest issue
With this camera
And I kind of
Mentioned this already
But I do think
The images out of this camera
Kind of just lack character
That is out of the box
Again you can go in
And customize things
And improve things
But I don't see
That Leica look
Right out of the camera
Which I kind of was expecting
I do feel like
I've now come to a place
Where I'm finding
What I really like
Out of the camera
And I do notice the lens
Being differentiated from
Many of my other compacts
It is a settled
Nuanced thing though
For my color settings
My favorite has been standard
I go with my color
To the medium setting
Medium high
Medium low contrast
Which does like a weird
Slightly artificial thing
Where it lifts the shadows
But I kind of like it
And you can really see it
In some of these desert shots
Where the contrast was more high
It muddies some of the shadows
A little bit
But I kind of like it
Like I came to a place
Where I was like
Ah I dig it
I will play with the contrast
A little bit though
Sometimes I push it
A little farther
So I'll go to like more standard
Or even medium high
And with these settings
I get images
I am very happy with
Right out of camera
But the files in RAW
Have a surprisingly
Decent latitude as well
So you can really work
With the RAWs
To create looks
And rescue some of the shadows
It does not rescue highlights
As well as shadow
So again
Just underexposing a little bit
Will do a great service
To your post process
But it recovers shadows
Really really well
And I've said it before
And I'll say it again
Just shoot this entirely manual
It is such a fun
Small extremely capable
Discreet little camera
But with all this praise
Do I think this camera
Is worth the price
It is usually going for
On sites like eBay
Where I think it's like
Around 800 to like 1200 dollars
I don't
I can't justify that price
For this camera
I mean at those prices
You can get the Ricoh GR3
Which I have mixed feelings about
But again you can get
A lot of other cameras
For that price point
This is a Leica
You are paying for the name
And it is definitely
A beautiful camera
But it is a camera
You will miss shots with
I can promise you
It happened to me many times
All of that being said though
I have really bonded
With this camera
In the past 2 weeks
And my experience
With this camera
Has led me to kind of feel like
I mean I was fully
Just going to buy this
And sell it
That was my plan
I actually already
Sold it to MPB
It's like got a box
Waiting to ship
But now I'm
Kind of rethinking it
Because I really did enjoy
Shooting this
So I don't know
I'm a little bit on the fence
But for the time being
It will be sticking with me
And Leica
If you are listening
What are you doing
Just make this thing again
Like make a modern version
Of this camera
You would kill it
Make it at a more
Accessible price point
Not you know obviously like
Bargain basement price
Because that's not your brand
You're an elevated
High expensive brand
But make this somewhat accessible
And make it with good auto focus
Fixed focal length
Of 35 millimeters
To differentiate it from the Q
And keep it small
Like bare neck
And we have something
That will get my dollars
In a heartbeat
That's my plea
Don't make me
Do some stupid challenge
I really feel like
I crushed my desert vacation
So I did put together
My whole itinerary
In a link down below
If you are interested
In replicating it
In any fashion
Particularly if you have kids
It is a bit more like kid focused
But I have linked that down below
I also thought
It would be worth mentioning
That all the B-roll
From the vacation
Was filmed on my iPhone
Because I had absolutely
No time or energy
As a solo parent
To put into content creation
It really delivered
And I feel like
It's just another point
For the no bad cameras philosophy
So just remember
If you want to create
Don't let the equipment
Be a barrier
Use what you have
To express your own voice
And until next time
Be good
Be kind
And be present
To your own potential
That feels so woo woo
But like happy 2024
I love you
Thanks for watching
And I'll see you in the next one
