Welcome to the Big Island of Hawaii, a paradise of diverse landscapes and unforgettable experiences.
Today we're taking you on a five-day adventure that will showcase the best this incredible
island has to offer.
So sit back, relax, and let's dive into the wonders of Hawaii's largest island.
Our journey begins in Kona, the sun-soaked outdoor capital of the Big Island.
After picking up your rental car at the airport, head into town to drop off your bags.
If you're visiting between December and April, consider booking a whale-watching cruise or
for the more adventurous a manta ray night dive.
These experiences are truly magical, so be sure to book in advance.
As the day winds down, make your way to one of the beautiful West Coast beaches.
Kua Bay and Hapuna are local favorites, but if time is short, the King Kamehameha Beach
right in the heart of Kona is perfect for a quick dip or some light snorkeling.
End your first day with a breathtaking sunset and a refreshing mai tai at one of the beachfront
restaurants on Ali'i Drive.
Day two kicks off with an early start.
Jet lag works in our favor here.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast with ocean views in Kona or venture south to the charming coffee
shack in Captain Cook.
Don't forget to savor some fresh Kona coffee.
It's world-famous for a reason.
Next we're heading to the Puʻuhonuaʻohonaunau National Historical Park, also known as the
City of Refuge.
This sacred site was once a place of sanctuary for those who broke ancient Hawaiian laws,
offering them protection from punishment.
Today, it provides a fascinating glimpse into ancient Hawaiian culture and rituals, with
reconstructed temples and royal grounds.
Just a stone's throw away lies Two Step, one of the island's premier snorkeling spots.
Remember to treat this area with respect.
It's not just a tourist destination, but a place of great cultural significance.
As we transition to day three, it's time to say goodbye to Kona and hello to Volcano
Village.
The drive takes about two hours, but don't rush.
There's plenty to see along the way.
Consider stops at South Point, the southernmost tip of Hawaii, or Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach,
a favorite nesting spot for sea turtles.
Once in Volcano Village, drop off your bags and head straight to Hawaii Volcanoes National
Park.
Start at the Visitor Center to plan your exploration and catch the informative park video.
Must-see attractions include the Thurston Lava Tube, a massive underground tunnel formed
by flowing lava, and the Chain of Craters Road, offering stunning views of the park's
volcanic landscape.
For hiking enthusiasts, the Kalawia Iki Trail offers an unforgettable journey from lush
rainforest into an otherworldly caldera landscape.
Day four presents two exciting options.
The first takes us to Kalapana and the Puna District, where you can witness the raw power
of volcanic activity firsthand.
Once home to one of the world's most beautiful beaches, Kalapana now showcases nature's constant
cycle of destruction and creation.
As you explore the Puna Coast, don't miss the new black sand beach forming near the
old one.
It's a rare opportunity to see geology in action.
Alternatively, you could spend day four exploring Hilo, the island's largest town.
Start with breakfast at Ken's Pancake House, a local institution, before wandering through
downtown shops and galleries.
If you're lucky enough to visit on a Wednesday or Saturday, the Farmer's Market is a must-see
slice of local life.
Nature lovers shouldn't miss Rainbow Falls and the boiling pots along the Wailuku River.
As night falls, we're heading up to Mauna Kea for some of the best stargazing on the planet.
The visitor center offers free stargazing programs, but for the full experience, consider
booking a tour to the summit.
Mauna Kea is a sacred site for Native Hawaiians, and its summit, which reaches nearly 14,000
feet above sea level, offers views that stretch across the Pacific.
Just remember, you'll need a 4WD vehicle if you plan to drive to the top yourself.
Our final day takes us on a scenic road trip to Waipio Valley.
As we drive counterclockwise around the island, we'll pass through Hilo and along the stunning
Hamakua Coast.
Don't miss the four-mile scenic route just outside Hilo.
It's a winding, magical drive that showcases the coast's beauty.
Further along, Akaka Falls State Park offers a chance to see Hawaii's most famous waterfall.
Our journey concludes at the Waipio Valley Overlook, where you'll gaze upon the Valley
of Kings, a site of immense cultural importance to Native Hawaiians.
This lush, remote valley was once home to Hawaiian royalty and is known for its dramatic
cliffs, waterfalls, and black sand beach.
It's a fitting end to our Big Island adventure, a place where natural beauty and rich cultural
heritage intertwine.
As we wrap up our five-day exploration, we hope you've fallen in love with the Big Island's
diverse landscapes, rich culture, and aloha spirit.
From black sand beaches to starry summits, from historic sites to vibrant towns, the
Big Island truly has something for everyone.
