Louvre
R5
或是《Live Long Day》
Montparnasse
Odessa
Montparnasse
Ripley
這只是
在Netflix
Patricia Highsmith
小說
Mr.Ripley
13次 Emmy獲得
Limited Series
跟著
Con artist
Tom Ripley
Scott
Magnet
Richard Dickey
Greenleaf
I'm not taking anything away from it. It's every single shot is beautiful. It's carefully carefully thought out
And put together
In a way that can be digested and obviously a lot of people like it but just for me
It's not necessary now because it's
When you go back and you watch films from the French New Wave like Breathless and Paris Belongs to Us
Every shot is just locked off
For the most part like I think
Breathless was breaking new ground because he was using wheelchairs and stuff to roll around and get the camera to actually move
But the camera itself
For the most part is locked off and the characters in the scenes are the things that are moving
Where is this film
Series
In my opinion when I was watching it is shot exactly like a modern film
We might have 3, 4, 5 cuts in a scene
Every cut should give you new information
It should be very intentional and it is and it's shot perfectly for in a current modern way
But these old films like Breathless that were in black and white
Because they didn't everything was shot on film
They didn't have
Limitless amounts of data
So they would be very intentional in what they shot and they would just let scenes play out statically like locked off on tripods
And the thing
The reason that I think they're easier to watch is because you're not just scanning the scene looking
You're just watching the people in the scene move
That's just an observation I made
My opinion
And also
Photography
If you want to look at some amazing black and white photographers
There's obviously Ansel Adams
Don McCullin
And Frank Hurley Frank Hurley wait
Frank Hurley
This book here
Is amazing
If you're not familiar with him get familiar with him
He's a lost treasure
My father-in-law gave me this book and I've flipped through it a couple times
The photography this guy produces is unreal for the era that he was in
I believe he was on an expedition to Antarctica
And he got some unbelievable images
So that was shot in 1913
That's when these images were produced
And you need to check this out
If you're looking for
Vintage black and white look no further amazing book check it out
Okay so in closing
I guess I'm just going to talk about
Why I like to shoot number one on film and number two I use black and white way more than I should
Like when you see a black and white image
Or I'm turning it into black and white I don't want to do it just because like I overexpose that
Or
Drag shutter or it's out of focus and not the way that I intended it to be
I don't want to just slap it in black and white and be like
I want every time I use black and white to kind of have a
Have a meaning
So drag shutter for example is a really good way to do this
It does convey kind of
Timelessness and nostalgia which is what you're aiming for in my opinion when you're going black and white
If you're going black and white you kind of want
You need to feel that nostalgia you need to come into the scene and it makes sense that it's in black and white
Not just
Every single photo black and white that's what I'm trying to say in this video
Is I love black and white
But when the whole thing is black and white it kind of takes away from it
It's like that with a lot of things in life
But yeah this is obviously
Open for debate
It's the whole reason I'm making this video I want to hear what other people think about this stuff
Have you seen Breathless like there's some amazing quotes in this film
Like when she goes
To the reporter
What's your greatest ambition in life and he says
To become a mortal
And then die
And
At the start where he says if you don't like to see the mountains of the city then just get stuffed
Yeah it's a really good film you should check it out
100% recommend
It's a bit of a slow burn
Obviously because it's like
What 60 years old at this point
But yeah
Still timeless classic
Yeah that's it for me man
Let me know what you think
Comment below tell me if you use black and white
Not enough or too much
I find there's not really ever a healthy balance
That's it
Back to work
Thank you
