Hello How did I start this last week? Did I say hello or hi? When you think of the word summer What images do you have in your head? I think of a lot of outdoor activities Whether it's outdoor cinema, concerts, parks, picnics, beach hangouts And also outdoor dining And I thought of some other summery things Such as the warm morning light As well as the warm evening light I did go back to some places I photographed before But because of the changing of seasons I think I got different results this time Something I noticed is that a lot of photographers They do this thing called a warm-up shot As someone who has never done that This picture kind of made me realize the importance of it Mainly because number one This picture was taken in a hurry If I saw this person noticed me with the camera He seemed a little uncomfortable And because of that I wasn't in a hurry I took one picture and just walked away But going back to the warm-up shot I was able to get an idea of the lighting I have not shot this early in the morning in a long time This was around 7.30 And I simply didn't know what kind of lighting to expect So overall not bad But at the same time the composition could be so much better Maybe if I asked this person Hey can I get a picture of you You can just continue reading And I could photograph it from different angles Maybe even from the inside of the cafe That would have been really cool I think I would have been more mindful of How I captured this person Because I was here pretty early in the morning It was very empty Not a lot of people were there But I really wanted someone to sit in the light Drink their coffee and enjoy the morning That didn't happen So I decided to take these pictures as a reference But at the same time I'm kind of enjoying this serene quietness Slowness of the morning here When I exported this picture I thought it's so overexposed But then I remembered why that happened I wanted to show the people on the right And also showcase the interior of the cafe Through the left window In order to do that I had to brighten up a little bit And because of that The exterior of the building was washed out If the exterior was nicely balanced out That meant the people on the right And the interior on the left They were not going to be seen Of course I could take two pictures Maybe photoshop them in It's a learning experience I just need to take my time Play around with the camera some more And figure out what kind of setting Works best here So I can get the best of both worlds Every Friday in the summer LACMA LA County Museum of Art They have a live jazz night I've never been Only seen pictures of it And I thought That sounds like a fun summer activity And because I want to take A lot of summery pictures I decided to head over there After work on Friday But on my way there I came across this diner Because of the glare And the reflection on the window I decided to use my hand To create a shadow Or some kind of a blocker While I was experimenting With different shadow angles I realized I could kind of create That double exposure look Because of the reflection of the palm trees In the other building across the street This picture kind of has A little bit of the double exposure look And also I like how light it looks Compared to the completely blocked Cleaner version of the image The image on the right With a little bit of reflection It feels a little hollow And I think it does a better job Of showing how empty And abandoned this place is I hesitated including This portion of the video Because I simply do not like Any of the pictures that I took here Number one It was so crowded That the images that I had in my head Were not coming out properly And number two Because of the crowd I didn't have a lot of flexibility When it comes to Capturing certain moments The mood The scenery And all the little details I want to take pictures of Someone's picnic basket Someone pouring a bottle of wine Friends laughing together So many little details that I think I want to hear the word summer Those things did not happen here I saw those things But I couldn't photograph them This picture is a hot mess Too crowded Too dark You can't even see The person on the left very well But you know what I'm here to own up to my Terrible pictures And learn from them Honestly This would have been better If the focus was on The couple instead Maybe not The entire set of images From this place And of course We can't leave LACMA Without taking this picture But hear me out Lady on the left Another person on the right And the couple right there If the two people Came a little closer to the front Then if there was another person Preferably a couple Standing in the empty area That would have been a fun picture It's one person Two people One person Or if I had one person per Aisle That would have been a good picture too But this ended up being Just another cliche LACMA picture With no story Yeah I hesitated Including this entire set here I photographed Venice Beach A couple months ago But I wanted to come back here And see how I can Rephotograph it In a summary way This girl made my entire video She made me forget about Whatever happened at LACMA She was sitting there With her own helmet Watching all the skateboarders And the way she was Just watching them Was so pure That I had to get pictures of her Her holding onto the helmet And watching all the people What a great memory for her But I couldn't decide Which picture I liked The first one of the skateboarder Who is about to go And the second one Where the person is in action You can still see that the girl Is looking at both people I don't know I like them both But if I were to choose I think I will go with the second one No I like the first one I'll go with both To me this is The definition of summer Early summer night at the beach With your friends Getting your pictures taken If I were to create A summer 2023 short form video Of all the pictures That I took this summer I think this would be the cover For the last two to three months I've been playing around with motions And because I knew The background was going to be still And people were doing a lot of activities I wanted to incorporate A little bit of texture Intimate pictures This slide over here The picture on the right What I wanted to do Was to focus on the person on the bike And pan to the right By doing that This person will be in focus And the background will not be That was my idea Clearly I need more practice But I think I want to take more shots In this style When I'm back in New York, Tokyo Or even Hong Kong Just like how you cannot leave LACMA Without taking pictures of the urban light You cannot leave Venice Without taking a picture of this sign The first few minutes I got to the sign The lights were not on But as soon as I turned around I heard people say The lights are on So I turned around Got this picture It's very simple It almost looks like a stock image And because I've been Playing around with textures I thought I would slow down my shutter speed And play around with different lights Now they both are very cliche I'm sure a lot of people Have taken similar pictures But I wanted to show you Two options that I got Option number one on the left Very clean red and yellow lights I like this because The lines are very clear And the colors kind of match The rainbow light of the sign However on the right side Because the lights are more subdued And there's a bit of white haze from a car It seems a little colder And with the person standing on the right It has a different feeling A little cold A little lonely But I think if I were to choose one I'm gonna go with the left picture Overall trying to capture summer Was a little more difficult Than I thought it would be I'm not sure it's because I had so many expectations in my head And they didn't get executed properly Or it's simply because I wanted to go to these familiar places But capture something a little different But like I mentioned during the video We're all learning It's a learning process Maybe I'll do another summer video this year And see how that one goes Or maybe I'll do one in a different city We'll see Anyways I think I'm gonna do Another Ricoh video next week So I'll see you then
