So the Lumix S9 has been kind of released for a few months now
And finally being on the used market a little bit more and more
I want to kind of compare this camera versus the Lumix S5 II
And quick disclaimer, I obviously don't have the Lumix S5 II
This is the S5 II X
But I'm not going to be talking about the pro features that the S5 II X has
Because if you are looking at the S5 II or the S9
Then you most likely are not going to be needing those pro features
That the S5 II X is able to offer
But just want to throw that out there
So for the price, brand new for these cameras
The Lumix S9 is coming in around of $1499
Meanwhile, the S5 II is going to be paying you at $1799
So it's only going to be a $200 difference, brand new
But on the used market is where it gets more interesting
Especially because the Lumix S9
The reason that it had so much controversial opinions and thoughts about this camera
Well, there's probably a lot of reasons to a lot of different people
But one of the big factors was the price point
For $1500, you can basically almost $200 more
You can get the S5 II which has a lot more pro features on the camera
Let's see what it looks like now on the used market
So on the used market, it gets even more interesting
Because you can get the S9 or the S5 II
With only a $50 difference
And I do think over time
The S9 will be a little bit cheaper and cheaper
On the used market when there's more S9s just in the used market out there
I think this price will go lower in the used market than the S5 II
But the S5 II has just been out longer
So there's a lot more cameras on the market
Available in the used market for the S5 II
So aside from price, the biggest difference is
Obviously is going to be in the physical build
Obviously the S9 has a smaller overall body design with this camera
There's no grip whatsoever, you have no viewfinder
There's only a cold shoe instead of a hot shoe
So you can't connect the flash
You have no mechanical shutter
You only have a microphone jack
So there is no headphone jack
Your USB-C and you have a micro HDMI
But that's on your hand side
So you're not likely going to be plugging anything into that
On the bottom, you do have the normal battery
That the S5 II and 2X, the GH7
All the other Lumix cameras use this battery
But you only have one SD card slot on this camera
The buttons overall, I just feel like feel much cheaper
There's not as many function or custom buttons
Everything has a purpose on it
There is the new LUT button right here
Which has been pretty nice
I don't use it as how it was designed
But it's been a nice button to have
But overall, this is a much simpler camera
In comparison to the S5 II
Now the S5 II on the other hand
Is a much more beast of a camera
First off, it's fully weather sealed
Unlike the S9
You also have fans right here at the top
With the viewfinder, the hot shoe
You have your headphone jack, your mic jack
You have a full HDMI and a USB-C on this camera
There is a function button on the front
You have full white balance, ISO
All these dedicated buttons
You have a much higher quality dial on the back
Two SD card slots right here
This camera is overall
It feels like a much more professional camera
So if you handed both these cameras to a beginner
I would say someone picking up the S9
Would have a much easier and more enjoyable time
Picking up and using this camera
But if you handed this camera to a professional
Without a shadow of a doubt
They're gonna prefer the S5 II
At the end of the day
When you boil it down
Both these cameras recording internally
Have the exact same video specs
But the catch is
The record limits on the S9 is something else
Now there has been ton of test online
When people have hit record, stop record
And people are able to get up to
30 to 45 minutes of record time
On this camera on various different modes
So I think it was more of a protection point
They didn't, Lumix didn't want their cameras
To overheat on people obviously
But I think it would be nice
If there was some type of control
Where you can turn it on standard
Which has still the normal record limits
You can turn on low
So everything jumps up to
30 minute record limits
Or you can turn off your internal fan recording
And the camera will just go until it overheats
And needs to shut down and cool off
But the nice part is
When the Lumix S9 does overheat
You can actually still access some controls
So you might not be able to take videos
But you can still take photos
So it just really depends
What features need to get turned off
To let the certain parts of the camera cool down
But it is pretty nice
That you still can use this camera to an extent
Just not be able to access
All the video features
Or certain features on this camera
When it overheats
And I guess the last thing
I want to touch point on
On the Lumix S9
It does also have one more record setting
That the S5 II currently doesn't have
Which is going to be 4K light
Which is basically a 3.8K
Open gate 30 frames a second
This in part with the Lumix Lab app
You are able to actually transfer
Your video files
Directly from your camera
Instantly to your phone
And then upload them to social media
Or edit your videos on your phone
So for a content creator
This camera might be super useful
But I'll explain a little bit more about that
Later on in this video
Now the S5 II
The last thing I want to touch point on
This camera is
With a paid upgrade
You can get some of more of those
Pro features that the S5 II X has
Like the ProRes RAW
Recording externally in the monitor
But again I think if you're considering
Buying the S9 or the S5 II
You're probably not going to be worried about
Recording ProRes RAW
Or Blackmagic RAW
Via externally on a monitor
Not just yet anyways
Nextly is going to be
The image body image stabilization
Or IBIS
So Lumix has been known to have
Some of the best IBIS on the market
And currently actually the S9
Is the smallest full frame camera
With IBIS
This IBIS is the exact same
As the S5 II and 2X
This has amazing stabilization
In this camera
Granted it is worth noting though
Holding this camera
And just holding it
Because it has a grip on it
It's going to be a little bit easier
Getting handheld shots with this camera
Because it's just a little bit bigger
It's a little bit heavier
Meanwhile this one is a little bit smaller
So getting handheld shots
You still get super steady footage
With the electronic stabilization
Being able to go in high mode
Or the boost image lock stabilization
Theoretically you can get better
Image stabilization out of the S5 II
Just because it's a little bit heavier
Of a camera body than the S9
Now for autofocus
It's basically the exact same
Between both these cameras
They have the identical face detect autofocus
Though the S9 does have some improvements
On the autofocus
Of course with each generation of a camera
From the S5 II to 2X
There's been some slight improvements
Of autofocus
And then from the S5 II X
Now you have the S9
There's definitely going to be
Continuous improvements
As they develop more and more cameras
Later down in the line
So it's just ever so slightly better
Like for example
You do get face detect autofocus
In 1080 60 frames
And in some of the slow and quick options
You also have access now
To face detect autofocus
So little things like that
Have just slight improvements
Of the autofocus actually on the S9
Versus the S5 II
Now before I get into
Who I recommend each one of these cameras to
Let's talk about some of the key differences
Of both these cameras
Starting off with the S9
The first thing is the real time LUT functionality
So real time LUT has got
Kind of a big upgrade on this camera
Not only can you now apply two LUTs
To a color picture profile
You can also change the opacity
By 10% on each LUT
With the release of the Lumix S9
Lumix also released the Lumix Lab app
Which is a whole new app
Lumix developed that basically
Takes this camera and connects it to your phone
And you have full
Way more control with this camera
Not only can you edit your JPEG photos
On the app
You can create LUTs
You can send your LUTs to your friends
Send your LUTs to your cameras
You can instantly transfer your photos
And videos to your phone
You can also kind of set it up
So when you hit a photo
Take a photo
It'll instantly go to your phone
Or if you're using that 4K light
When you stop recording
That video file will automatically be on your phone
So I think this is great for people
Who want to create Instagram Reels
Or create TikToks
And they just want to level up their content quality
But they don't want to get something
Super chunky and big like this
And have to figure out how this works
And then connect it to your computer
Then send it to your phone
So for the content creators
That are actually editing videos on their phones
This could be a way to upgrade your quality overall
You can get that high quality footage
That Lumix is able to provide
You can shoot in V-Log
And use the real time LUTs
That are available via the app
Some of my own LUTs are actually on the app
So if you want to download
Some of my LUTs for free
Go to the Lumix Lab app
And see where Matthew Danew is
And you can get some of my favorite LUTs
Obviously the next key difference and advantage
Is going to be the size
It's super small
It's super portable
And you can fit this in your bag
A lot easier than you can fit
This big camera in your bag
Then with that
I do want to make a note
Again a lot of people complain
That there's no compact lenses
Sigma does have some compact lenses
But there's no pancake lenses
I think those type of lenses
Will come with time
Companies will develop them
It's just going to take a second because
There just needs more development
In the L Mount Alliance
So it's going to happen over time
There's going to be more compact lenses
For example the 18-40 Lumix lens
Will come out pretty soon
In this end of the year at some point
So and then hopefully also again
The firmware updates with time limits
Once those time limits get taken away
Or they're increased to at least 30 minutes
This camera also will be way more usable
For people that want to create YouTube videos
And just shoot you know 20 minute videos
Like this one right here
And then the last feature
I kind of want to add on
Is going to be the hybrid zoom
I literally went to the gym in the morning
The moon was looking so sick
And I took that lens
And here is what it looks like at 28mm
Here's what it looks like at 200mm
And then with the hybrid zoom turned on
Here's what it looks like at 624mm
Nextly let's talk about
Some of the key differences
About the S5 II
The first one is obviously
It's just a more professional camera
And the body design overall
You know the EVF
The shutter
The hot shoe
No record limits
The paid upgrade for raw video
You have the frame.io
Camera to cloud connection
And proxies that you can record on this
You have dual SD cards
The fan
Overall this is definitely
A better bang for the buck
Because of the professional video features
And then on top of that
The used market deals
Because this camera has been out
Much longer than the S9
There's a ton more S5 II's
Available on the used market
So you could probably find
A better deal for the S5 II
Than you can for the S9
In the used market
And save a ton of money
So finally some of my final thoughts
On the S9 versus the S5 II
If you are looking for
A professional camera
That you can do your photos
Or videos for clients shoots
Or you're just looking for
A really high end camera
Well then the S5 II
Is definitely going to be
The clear winner here
With the unlimited record limits
The fan
Dual SD cards
Proxies
This camera is going to be
Giving you a lot more functionality
Than the S9 does
But I will say
If you're looking for
More of a simplistic camera
An everyday carry
Something that is kind of like
The low key dad camera right now
Being able to take photos
With your friends
Or take photos
When you're with the fam
The S9 is
There's just something kind of
Really really nice about the S9
It's super simple
It's an easy camera for people
That are just wanting to
Upgrade their TikTok
Or Instagram real videos
This camera being able to
Connect to your phone
And shoot videos
And have them directly
Transfer on your phone
Is much much easier
And like I said
If you gave this
These cameras to beginners
I feel like the S9
Is going to be much easier
To understand and use
Because of the simplistic design
I would love to hear
Your guys comments in the below
Which camera are you
Thinking about picking up
Is it going to be the S5 II
Because it's a more professional camera
Or you're looking for
That everyday camera
Where you can carry around
And not feel like
It's much of a hassle to use
Love to hear your guys comments
In the description below
Anyways if you want to check out
Another video where I review
The Lumix S9
