
ENGLISH LANDSCAPE PAINTING 1

A sequence of paintings by Benjamin Williams Leader, who was born in the city of Worcester in 1831. Leader painted throughout his long life and enjoyed considerable commercial success from an early age. He worked in the British Isles and in European countries. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1889 and was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1898. He exhibited at the RA until 1922, when he was 91 years of age. His work can be seen at the Tate Modern, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
The music is the Andante second movement from Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Bucolic Suite", composed in 1900 and recorded for the first time on an Albion Records disc CDLX7289. It is played by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Martin Yates.
