I got an idea, it's pretty simple
We don't need no fancy shoes
It's about time for together time
So here's what I thought we should do
We can sleep in and eat waffles
With maple syrup too
After breakfast we'll go walking
Into the afternoon
We'll hold each other as the sun sets
Zoom back to the club
Eatin' peaches
G'day friends
What you just watched was a short film I shot
Using this SIRUI 35mm 2.9 carbon fibre
Full frame anamorphic lens
That's a mouthful
It's hard to believe that this little lens
Could be so cinematic
So today I'm going to break down
9 things you need to know about this lens
I'll cover its standout features
A few quirks
And my honest thoughts after using it
So let's get started
Ok, first up is build quality
This lens is an absolute stunner
The carbon fibre construction
Not only makes it lightweight
But also super durable
It's a lens you can rely on
Whether you're shooting handheld, on a gimbal
Or even in tougher conditions
And honestly it feels like a premium lens
That you would usually pay twice as much for at least
Now this is a fully manual lens
Which means no autofocus, no image stabilisation
So it's all on you to get that perfect shot
While that may sound a bit intimidating
The manual controls give you unmatched precision
Plus it's a great way to really learn the art of filmmaking
And because it's manual
Everything you're going to miss focus on some of the shots
So shoot multiple takes and check in between
I was filming this scene with my Ronin-S
And I had to keep checking to make sure I had focus in my shots
Alright, let's talk about anamorphic magic
This lens has a 1.6 times squeeze
Which means you get that beautiful widescreen cinematic look
While using the entire sensor
There's no cropping required
So your final output is in full resolution
But while you're filming it looks like this
And of course we're going to talk about those blue flares
They're absolutely gorgeous
And that's what anamorphic lenses do for you
They give you that horizontal line of a flare in a light
You see it all the time in a Star Wars movie for instance
And whether you're shooting night scenes
Or dramatic backlit shots
The flares add so much character to your footage
Here's a few comparisons of this lens versus a wide angle lens
Since this SIRUI lens is a 35mm lens
I set the wide angle lens to 35mm as well
And this was shot on tripod
And you can see just how much more field of view you get on the SIRUI
Versus a wide angle
And of course you get those nice blue flares
This lens is available for full frame cameras
And comes in a variety of mounts including
Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and L mount
So no matter which one of those systems you're using
You should be covered
Just make sure to check compatibility before you buy anything
Also there are two types of lenses
One is a blue flare and one is a neutral flare
So the blue flare obviously gives you a nice blue horizontal line
And the neutral flare will give you more of a white horizontal line
But I'll put links to both of them in the description for you
In case you want to check it out for yourself
The minimum focus distance on this lens is 0.9 of a meter
Or roughly 3 feet
And while that's decent for most scenarios
You'll need a diopter if you want to get closer for tight shots
Also let's talk about micro jitter
Because this lens lacks stabilization
Handheld shots can show some jitter
Especially on longer takes
Using a gimbal or a tripod can help smooth things out
Now let's break down the dials
The focus ring is buttery smooth
And has clear markings making it easier to hit your focus marks
If you're using this on a gimbal with a standard LCD screen
On your camera
There's two ways I'd maintain focus
If you aren't using a follow focus system
Or having someone else doing focus for you
Number one is the way that everybody does it
By using the zoom function on your screen
So you can zoom in and get your focus
And then do your shot
But number two is basically line up your shot
You'll need to take notice of how far away you are from your subject
You can do this pretty quickly with a laser measurer like this
Let's just say you're 2 meters away from your subject
Just turn the focus dial to 2 meters on the lens
Then all you have to do is maintain that distance
If your subject is moving
Now the aperture ring doesn't click between settings
Which is perfect for smooth exposure adjustments during a shot
This is no clicking
See it's just silent
Oh I love that
And the aperture ranges from F2.9 to F16
Which is pretty decent
And both of the dials are geared with nice big meaty teeth
So they'll work seamlessly with follow focus systems
If that's the way you want to go
One feature that really impressed me
Is the minimal barrel distortion
Unlike many anamorphic lenses
The SIRUI 35mm keeps lines straight and true
Which is a big deal for architectural or wide shots
It's just one less thing you have to focus on in post production
Of course you can fix it in post if that was a problem
But it's nice to know you don't have to
And by now you're probably wondering
If there's anything wrong with this lens
Well there are a few quirks I need to mention
But before that let's cover one important setup tip
They can save you so much time and a lot of frustration as well
If you find that this lens isn't working right out of the box
Don't panic
If you're using this lens on a mirrorless camera for instance like I do
Then you'll find that you won't be able to take photos or video
And the buttons won't do anything
This is because the camera thinks that there is no lens attached
Because it's a fully manual lens
All you have to do is go into your camera's menu
And look for the setting that allows shutter release without lens attached
Enable that and you're good to go
All right let's talk about the downsides of this little lens
This little amazing little lens
First off the lack of stabilization means handheld shots
Are going to be very tricky
Second the minimum focus distance is a pain
Because you quite often find yourself moving in a little too close
And you ruin your shot like I did here
Also these lenses are not weatherproof
Like a Canon or a Sony lens is weatherproofed
They're only coated in a waterproof coating
At the front element area of the lens
So keep that in mind if you're going to be using these
In rainy weather or wet weather
And finally while the blue flares are beautiful
They can be overwhelming in certain lighting conditions
A little goes a long way so use them thoughtfully
So is the SIRUI 35mm 2 2.9 Carbon Fiber Anamorphic Lens worth it
For the price and the cinematic quality it delivers
I'd say absolutely
As long as you're comfortable with using a manual lens
The fact that this lens is currently on sale at $999 US
Down from $1299 it's an absolute steal
The footage it produces is amazing
And anamorphic lenses are usually thousands of dollars
So if you want a cinematic experience for a fraction of the cost
This lens is a winner
But what if you haven't got yourself a mirrorless camera
To use a lens like this on
Well you can click the video right here
To see three great choices for beginners on a budget
See you later
