What's up everybody, BT here
We all know that Nikon just a few days ago announced
That you can get a KX or a Raptor X
In a Nikon Z mount
And since the red Nikon
Acquirement announcement was made
I have been thinking
Pining for a Komodo X with a Z mount
If they ever make it, I'm gonna do it
So when they announced it and they announced
Not only could you just buy a Komodo X
And a Z mount
But you can send your pre-existing KX
In for a mount upgrade
I was like hell yes
And registered as fast as I possibly could
But after about a few days of strong deliberation
And talking to a few friends that also had KX
I've come to realize that right now
It's just not the right decision for me to upgrade
And there are a few reasons why
And that's what we're gonna talk about
First reason being
I'm just not ready to buy
Mount specific glass yet
This has an RF mount
And at the time I also had a Canon R5
A Canon R5C and a C70
So I had cameras that all shared the same mount
And so it made sense to buy mount specific glass
I had the 15-35mm
70-200mm
And 51.2mm all RF
And that made a lot of sense
I can put them on here
I can put them on my C70
I can put them on my R5C
They all worked
But at some point
I sold all of the mirrorless cameras
And so now they only worked on this camera
But after some testing
I realized that these Sigma ART EF lenses
Actually performed better with autofocus
Than my RF lenses
And for what I was doing
I wasn't doing intense autofocus things anyway
I'm just sitting at a desk talking
Or maybe I'm slightly moving in and around the frame
From like 10 or 15 feet away
But I wasn't doing anything crazy
No sports
No wildlife
Nothing like that
And so for the cost and the performance
It made more sense to invest in these
And get rid of the RF glass
So right now all I have are
PL universally adaptable
Leica M universally adaptable
And Canon EF which is universally adaptable
So my current workflow isn't mount specific
It will work on everything
But bigger than that
I'm totally satisfied with what I have right now
Now to expand on the lensing
Yes, the Nikon Z
Dramatically opens up a lens catalog
You've got Nikon Z
You've got Nikon F
But again because of the flange distance
Now you have anything for Sony E mount
That can be made
And we're not talking just Nikon and Sony
We're talking about all the third parties
That make glass for each of those mounts
Tamron, Sigma, Viltrox
They're all doing incredible stuff
However, I'm still happy with what I have
I guess the second thing would be the cost
Talking about lenses
The cost comes into it
Yes, while the update
The conversion to go from the Canon RF mount
To the Nikon Z mount
Is the cheapest RED has ever offered
Like that's the cheapest update
Slash upgrade they've ever offered
It's still 1600 bucks
That's a lot of money
And with the lenses that I have
I would have to get different adapters
For all of those to work on
And that's going to cost me anywhere
From like 2 to 600 bucks
But let's be honest
If you're doing this conversion
You're thinking I can't wait to get the autofocus
So that means you're now going to have to buy
Nikon Z or Sony E glass
To get that autofocus
And even if you buy something like
Those super cheap Sigma contemporary primes
Or maybe even those super small
And super cheap Sigma zooms
For the Sony E
You're looking at another
Grand to 2 grand in new glass anyway
And I just don't find myself going
I need autofocus so bad right now
That I need to invest
Almost 3000 dollars between mounts
Adapters and new autofocus capable glass
And even though it is kind of separate
The Nikon mirrorless ecosystem
Is a part of this decision
It doesn't really make much sense for me
To convert this to a Nikon Z mount
And buy a bunch of Z mount glass
Without also getting a mirrorless body
However, none of the bodies
Are substantially better
Or work better in my workflow
Than what I already have now
With my Lumix S5 Mark II
I rented a Z8
And it's a really good camera
And it is the better camera
But it's not so substantially better
That it makes sense for me to lose all the money
Going from that system to the Nikon system
Not to mention that
The Z8 and the Z9 and the Z6 Mark III
They don't have RED RAW in them already
I think once that happens
Me moving over is a more likely decision
It's more probable
And because of that
Then it makes more sense
To also convert this to a Z
Or just buy a Z KX
And also buy the glass
To necessitate those mirrorless bodies
And then finally kind of a wacky reason
But one that really isn't talked about
And you should probably know is
If you have a Stormtrooper
Your camera is certainly not going to look the same
You see when you send it in to be converted
They have to change out this front plate obviously
But they're not offering any Z mounts
In the Stormtrooper colorway
They're all black
So you're going to have an Oreo in a way
That the front mount is black
And then the rest of the camera is white
But what I found out through talking to RED
Is that's not just the case
If it was just one plate
I don't think it would be that big of a deal
Because the mounts on the lenses on it
But this plate
This power on and off vent plate
Is also being changed to black
So these two plates would be black
And then the rest of the camera would be white
And when I asked RED like
If they could just change it over
And they were like no we can't
RED Nikon if you're watching this
I've talked to a few people
That aren't doing their upgrade
For literally just that reason
I'm not but it is a reason
And I would strongly consider
Maybe going back and looking at this
And making the change
You would make a lot of us early investors
The people that really invested early
Into this camera system
It would make a lot of us really happy
I got this question a lot
A bunch of Komodo OG users
Asked why the OG wasn't getting a conversion
They feel left out once again
And it's simply power
The Nikon Z mount actually draws power
And it draws more power
Than what those little BP batteries
Can actually give the Komodo OG
It's also the same reason
Why they couldn't put the monitor on there
But anyway yeah
The mount requires power
And the OG can't supply that power
And so the OG is never going to get that mount
Sorry just thought you should know
Anyway I know it's a short video
It's a quick video
But I just wanted to weigh in
Because people were asking me to weigh in
That is why I am not upgrading currently
But will I be
Yeah probably in like a year or so
It's kind of weird to say
But it's cool to say
I think over the next two or three years
Lumix and Nikon are going to make
The biggest waves in the camera world
As far as I can see
Those are my predictions
And I'm super stoked for it
Anyway that's it
If you have any questions at all
About the conversion
The price
Any details
Anything like that
Please let me know down in the comments below
Until the next one
I'll catch you later
Peace
