It starts out innocent enough, two strangers on a train, but what one man thinks is a chance
encounter turns into one of the most exciting, one of the most dangerous, and one of the
downright most sexy experiences of his entire life, all because he met a woman.
Hi, I'm Jake Hamilton here in Paris, France, talking with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie
about the new film The Tourist, and about why sometimes the best vacations are the ones
you never see coming.
Get ready, this is Jake's Takes.
It all started when I met a woman on the train.
I'm Elise.
I'm Frank.
That's a terrible name.
It's the only one I've got.
Maybe we can find you another.
Okay.
I have to be completely honest, I have been working up the courage over the last 24 hours
to try to ask you this question.
Because I genuinely with all my heart believe that you have the best dance sequences in
movies.
I love Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Brad is incredible, and there's a great dance sequence in this.
And it has been on my bucket list to be able to say to my grandkids one day that I danced
with Angelina Jolie.
As a woman, when you have a man in your life, how do you explain dancing with another man?
He's a young 22-year-old guy trying to impress his grandkids down the line.
All right.
Is there a way we can get this?
You can keep it low.
Awesome.
This is a great scene.
Are you leading or am I leading?
Because I feel like I'm leading.
I'll lead.
This is going so great.
This is like the greatest moment of my entire life.
It's all downhill from here.
Thank you so much.
You have no idea you've made my day.
I have a strange feeling that those two people over there are watching us.
I think you're right.
Really?
No.
I just had a bucket list moment.
I got to dance with Angelina.
Did what?
Angelina actually stood up and danced with me.
That was a bucket list.
I can finally, I can die a happy man.
That's a good one.
I didn't know if she was going to go for it.
She was kind enough to do it.
I don't know if I can ever be unhappy ever again.
Here's the deal.
The good news is that you won't have to dance with me.
That was actually my next...
No, because you've done it with Angelina.
Where are you going to go?
Life's downhill?
Yeah.
It's over.
All right.
Good to know.
It's over.
Awesome.
You have a fantastic scene with Angelina where you are a mystery novel fanatic.
You tell her what your mystery story would be between the two of you.
We're two guys sitting in a hotel room in Paris.
What would be our mystery story?
Our mystery story?
Mm-hmm.
Well, unfortunately, somebody would probably come around that window with a ball-peen hammer.
Which means one of us has got to die.
There's got to be a death by the end of chapter two.
Yeah, but the thing is, I would see your eyes kind of widen.
And you might panic a bit.
But you wouldn't say anything.
Which I would have wished you would have said something.
Look, the guy comes and clocks me.
Clocks me, knocks me out.
It's over with.
I like to think that I could defend you.
Would you do it?
I would do it.
Well, there's a rewrite there.
Frank!
Come with me.
Elise Ward and husband.
You're ravenous.
Do you mean ravishing?
I do.
All right, grab him.
Hello?
I need help.
There are two men trying to break down the door.
What kind of problem do you have with the door, sir?
No, no, no.
There are two men with guns trying to break in.
I've got to go.
Whenever you do a movie, is it ever frustrating that if you even have a conversation with someone off-set,
that a picture can be taken and things can be misconstrued?
Do you ever get tired of that?
Yes.
But you expect it and you just know how to deal with it.
You mostly ignore it.
Hypothetically, if you and I walked out of this hotel together and we were having a conversation,
would that happen?
It would probably happen, yes.
That makes me very excited.
Well, you're alone in Paris.
I am, which is unfortunate.
You've got to go to a very, very local Parisian cafe or something and try to get to know a Parisian.
Unless you want to invite me over for dinner, which I am more than free tonight.
Can you babysit?
I am an awesome babysitter.
I would do great.
I actually really do love kids.
They'd probably love you.
Why is everyone trying to kill me?
Alexander Pierce.
Stole big money from a gangster.
They think you are him.
The man's a criminal, wanted in 14 countries.
It's gone too far.
You were part of the plan.
This is exactly why she chose him.
To distract us.
I am sorry I got you involved in all of this.
Why are you involved?
The last time you and I talked, you ended the conversation and told me that the next time we were going to be together, we were going to shoot in an exotic location.
So, I got the call from Sony and they said that you wanted to see me in Paris.
You set this up, didn't you?
I did.
This is going well.
It is.
I love it.
Awesome.
And then you have this great line in the film where you say that women don't like guys asking questions.
Which, as a guy who makes his living asking questions, it actually kind of worries me.
So, how can I impress you without asking questions?
You have to just be extremely demanding and very, very masculine.
Oh, I am so screwed.
You have no idea.
Awesome.
But, you know, I have to say, one thing I love about your roles is that they're strong women.
And I love that no matter what kind of role it is, they have that one characteristic, which I think is incredible.
And I've talked to you a few times before and you're such a strong woman, which I love.
Do you make the characters stronger or do you think the characters make you stronger?
I think you bring, I tend to want to play people that I have some respect for.
And so I think you always want to, if it doesn't exist on the page, you want to add something about that character that you support.
And I support people that have some kind of strength, whether it be, like in The Changeling, I was fortunate enough to do a role that she had a very strong heart, emotionally strong.
But sometimes often just cool or strong or tough.
You know, I like people that have a fight in them.
You know, he will be with us.
You wish to report a murder.
Attempted murder.
That's not so serious.
Not when you downgrade it from murder, but when you upgrade it from room service, it's quite serious.
Of all the characters you've done, and I don't know, I feel weird saying this, but I feel like this character is the one that's the most weird, if only because he's the most normal of the characters you've played.
What is it, if that's correct, if that's a correct assumption, what is it?
That's exactly it.
Is there something weird about being normal?
Most definitely, yeah.
The thing that was intriguing, most intriguing for me about this film is the idea of normal.
What is considered normal, who is considered normal.
And you take this math teacher, let's say, math professor out of Wisconsin.
He leaves the country for the first time and he goes to Venice and he's had no great highs, he's had no great lows in his life.
And he's thrown into this absurd and violent horror show and has to deal with it.
So, how does Mr. Normal deal with that?
The idea of the guy who all he thinks about is this electronic cigarette or his mystery novels.
It's a very simplistic kind of existence and that was sort of what I was looking for.
Absolutely, it was perfect.
John, it's always a pleasure talking with you.
Absolutely.
Thank you so much, man.
Thank you.
Take care.
I don't regret it, you know, kissing you.
Woo!
Golden.
Woo!
I got a bridge!
