Synopsis:
Josef Strauss's Polka française "Feuerfest" was first performed on March 13, 1869, at a company party at the old Viennese Wertheim company:
The entire workforce—directors, workers, clerks, and carters—had gathered in the flower rooms of the Horticultural Society on the Ringstrasse, which was still under construction, to celebrate the sale of the 20,000th iron cash box. The cash registers were considered "fireproof" – the company consistently emphasized this quality of their product in its large-scale advertising campaigns – and thus the title of Josef Strauss's dedicatory composition was a natural choice. In the coda, the blacksmith's hammers of a bygone era still echo today.
