Trevor Robinson
Trevor
Trevor
Jeanette
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor
Jeanette
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor
Chris Bob
Trent
Trent
Trevor
Trevor
Jeanette
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor,
Trent
Trevor
Trevor
Trevor
Goobergandra
But before that happens, the building needs waterproofing, which isn't cheap.
It's hit me nearly $100,000.
So, yeah, waterproofing, it's hurting.
I can tell you, it is hurting.
Trevor is paying for the house using savings and superannuation.
And he didn't plan for this pot of money to take such a pounding.
But the one thing you can't afford to scrimp on with an underground house is waterproofing.
He doesn't want water inside his house.
He doesn't want it coming in through the back wall.
He doesn't want it coming in through the roof.
We've been doing it long enough.
We're pretty confident.
But, yes, you can get a leak.
Other trades, after we've finished, have to be really careful of what's happening to the membrane.
Because if they puncture it, we won't know about it
before it gets buried underneath all the earth and the grass and all of that.
To create a rainproof barrier,
the roof has been coated with a water-repellent sealant.
On top of that,
hundreds of metres of 8mm-thick bitumen membrane is being laid.
To create an impenetrable seal,
every edge is melted at 400 degrees Celsius and stuck together.
I nearly got blown over there.
Gee, that was a good gust, wasn't it?
It's just too windy.
It's causing a few problems.
The torch is not getting enough heat to melt that properly.
But if we can't get that,
we're sort of losing the effect on what the membrane's supposed to do.
It's not too bloody windy. That hat stayed on.
I don't think we should do any more.
Tricky weather conditions like this
have caused the waterproofing to drag on for five months.
And Trevor's patience is wearing thin.
It's just so frustrating, you know.
I'm starting to become a pessimist,
which pisses me off because I'm usually an optimist.
In an attempt to speed things up,
Trevor has decided to stay on site,
camping out in his makeshift shed
with just the basic creature comforts.
Most times it's just me on my own.
By and large, I'm pretty self-sufficient.
I'm doggedly independent.
Life doesn't stop just because you've had an accident
and you've got a severe disability.
Life goes on.
And Trevor's dedication to the project is paying off.
His dream of a home that works for him,
not against him, slowly coming together.
There are not too many houses that I can drive into the land route.
And I think that's fairly specky.
So this is the guest bathroom.
This is going to be wheelchair accessible.
I've got lots of mates in wheelchairs.
They can come here and stay as well.
Now we go through a sliding door,
a wide sliding door.
I designed this place so it works for everyone.
It just makes good sense
to make a house wheelchair accessible
because you never know
when you're going to have an accident
or you're going to have a medical condition
and you're going to end up in a wheelchair.
So just common sense.
I mean, for everyone,
just make their places wheelchair accessible.
Autumn is settling in across the Gubagandra Valley.
Trevor's love for this stunning place
is what drove him to build Underground.
He doesn't want to spoil what Mother Nature created,
and that makes today's task very important.
I am so glad to fill in a hole.
It is just brilliant.
It's taken a long time to get to this.
I only wish Jeanette was here,
but she's unwell at the moment,
but she would have loved to have been here for this
because this is essentially the summit
of all our stress,
all the hard work,
all the saving,
all the design.
Now it becomes an earth house.
Before, it's just a concrete block.
But once all this lovely topsoil goes on,
it will be an earth house,
a true earth house.
Trevor's really keen to get it covered.
We've only got today to get the soil in
because there's supposed to be
about 30 mil of rain tomorrow.
There's a load of rain coming in
and it gets all sticky and boggy,
so we can't work, yeah.
So we've got to get as much done
as we can today, yeah.
Scotty's really good at what he's doing.
Have a look at the levels.
They're just spot on.
He just uses it like his hand.
He doesn't go in bull at a gate.
He uses that bucket
like a surgeon would use his hands
during an operation.
He's got such a deft touch.
The challenges of my job
are to get the material in
without damaging anything,
keep everything nice and level
so as we can get the water
and that to run off evenly.
This is the first earth house
I've ever worked on, yeah.
Now the design's, yeah,
something different,
but it should be good, yeah.
I don't like the look
of the clouds coming over here.
It's getting pretty dark,
so we've got to get this in
as quick as we can.
The boys are working frantically.
That rain's coming in pretty quick.
It's all hands on deck.
What can I say?
That is exactly what I wanted.
That is exactly what Jeanette wanted.
With a bit of grass on there,
it will blend in.
And it's just...
I can't...
Words fail me.
I've said a lot,
but words fail me.
It's brilliant.
Here we go.
NASA, we have landed
on the moon.
Yahoo!
And just before, the heavens open.
The dirt is on the earth house.
You see the photos?
I did see the photos,
and it looks awesome.
Yeah.
I'm really pleased.
Look, I tell you what,
I only wish you were here.
Yeah, I know.
It just looks great.
It's one hurdle.
One hurdle?
One milestone.
Sweetie, you don't sound well.
Ow.
I'll let you get back to your suit.
Love you a lot.
Love you too.
Love you.
Bye.
Damn, I wish she was here
to the earth house.
It's been 14 months
since Jeanette and Trevor
started building their underground home.
For most of that,
it's been like swimming upstream.
Hard work.
Might want to go up there,
Toddy, good boy.
That's it.
But today marks a milestone.
Watch the ground there.
The windows are going in,
the house close to lock-up.
I think it's fantastic.
It's a bit unique.
Gubaganda River below us.
Hills all around us.
What a spot.
Every time I come here,
I'm blown away
by how beautiful this landscape is.
Who wouldn't want to live here?
Look at them.
Holy doly.
Aren't they awesome?
A work of art, eh?
Yeah, they're awesome.
A work of art.
You don't know until it's actually in
how effective it's going to be,
but yeah, I think it's a great contrast.
The concrete block work,
what's the thinking around
the colour and the finish on that?
Watch this space.
You haven't made up your mind yet?
No, no.
You'd better make your mind up soon.
It's crazy they haven't given
the exterior finish more thought,
especially as they're desperate
for the building to blend in.
But what is encouraging
is how well the inside
is going to work for Trevor,
who'll have the best view
from a toilet I've ever seen.
I've got to spend a bit of time
on the loo of a morning.
It's part of being a paraplegic.
I just want to have something
that I can look out there and say,
wow.
I'm in.
I'm convinced.
We've got some rye grass
and white clover seed in there.
So it's a mixture?
Mixture, yeah.
Is it a local grass, the rye grass?
It's a local pasture, yeah.
OK, so it should strike well.
It should strike well.
The building will tend to disappear, yeah?
Yeah, it'll just look like a pasture.
Looking at the paddock,
I think it's awesome, yeah.
So how do we do this?
Pull the trigger
and wind the handle by looking at it?
Yep.
So pull the trigger.
Excuse me for a minute.
I'll just get the seed out of my pants.
No, stop.
Don't come near me with that.
OK.
It's a dangerous weapon.
Where do I go?
Off you go.
Oh, hang on.
You've got to pull the trigger as well.
There we go.
How's that looking?
Doing my best, Jeanette.
Hopefully my patch grows as well as everyone else's
as this green roof is the crown
on top of Jeanette and Trevor's underground haven.
So when this house is done,
how will it and will it transform your lives?
When I leave Canberra and I get here,
you feel just the...
you just relax
and it's going to enable us to really relax.
I think it'll become the hideaway
that our, you know, saviour, I suppose,
you know, to escape from everything.
It's now a year and a half since work started on the earth house
and for the most part,
Trevor has rolled with the punches during construction.
But an unexpected blow has floored him.
He needs surgery on his back to stop his spine from collapsing.
It's a necessary but life-threatening procedure.
It scares the shit out of me.
And I think that my...
I've been trying to mask it from my family
on how much it's worried me.
It has a failure rate of about 30%,
but I've got good faith in the surgeon.
It's worth the risk for his quality of life.
I would not want to see him living a life
stuck in a bed, twisted,
because that's the reality if he doesn't have it.
I'm sure he's going to fly through the surgery.
He'll be dog-determined to get out of hospital.
Currently, I am almost leaving a half-finished job
and I hate that with a passion.
I want to be out there and see it all the way through.
I only wished I had finished Fig Haven or the earth house
and then I could recuperate in it.
You know what I mean? Nothing would be better.
It's nearly two-and-a-half years
since I first visited Jeanette and Trevor
at their 15-acre property on the Goobagandra River
in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains.
It's raw, rugged country, but restful, chilled.
The perfect place for Trevor to heal
after his, thankfully, successful back surgery.
But with so much on their plate,
I'm hoping he and Jeanette
got their earth-covered retreat finished
and, most importantly for them,
made it one with the landscape.
Oh, my goodness, it gives nothing away.
So I just don't know what to expect.
When the hillside recovers
from marauding excavators and the grass regrows,
Jeanette and Trevor's earth house
will be well and truly camouflaged,
swallowed up by Mother Nature.
Wow, guys, this is extraordinary.
Congratulations.
You've got the world at your feet here.
The mist going through the hills,
the river roaring.
It's brilliant.
Jeanette, do you love it?
Yeah, absolutely.
I think the house is super dramatic.
You just don't expect something like this.
You just see the little green toupee on top.
It's not a box sitting on top of the ground.
Where's the wool shed gone?
Ah.
Ah, the wool shed.
Remember that?
Look, it became too unstable,
so we pulled it down bit by bit
and stacked it all up the top,
ready for a rebuild.
And tell me, how's your back after surgery?
Pete, I've got more hardware in my lower back
than Bunnings has.
So I'm still in the rehab phase.
It's a journey, isn't it?
It's a long journey.
Though we're better for Trevor to recover
than this futuristic concrete cocoon.
It's solid, robust, perhaps indestructible.
Very sensible in an area prone to bushfires.
But this toughness is tempered by softening touches.
The angled path of the windows
meandering like the river below,
mirroring the landscape they both find so revitalising.
What a cool pad.
And the good thing is
this just feels so intimate.
Ah, look, it is.
It feels as though the earth is hugging you.
There is a density to this building.
You can feel it around you, you know.
It feels like a very comfortable bombshell.
It feels very comforting,
and it feels secure, and it feels safe.
And best of all is that view,
which is just absolutely knockout.
It's awesome.
But the other thing about it,
the scale feels right.
You can see clearly
from one end of the house to the other
in one go, you know.
The open plan must work so well for you.
Oh, it does.
It's got to be just nice, clear.
Wheelways, I suppose.
Wheelways, yeah.
Navigation for me.
I can do speedies up and down
from bathroom to bathroom.
Not that you're going to.
The big thing about an underground house
is the leaks coming through the roof.
Have you had any?
Not for the bloody amount of money
that we spent on waterproofing.
I can tell you that now.
No, we've had none.
Not a leak, not a...
No, nothing.
That's reassuring, isn't it?
Yeah.
You sleep better at night
if there's no leaks.
But forget talk of leaks and rain.
Sprinkle snow on the hills
and you could be
in a decadent alpine retreat.
The earth above and heated floor
creating warmth.
The natural palette of timber
and off-form concrete
full of texture and character.
Come on through to the kitchen.
And to see Trevor move so effortlessly
around his new home is a joy.
This kitchen looks really tailored.
What is there about it
that makes it particularly useful?
I can get a wheel under here.
I can cook there.
There's a sink there.
I can see out to the beautiful valley.
Tell me about this wall.
This looks quite extraordinary.
Two mountains, is it?
Yeah, two mountains.
With a valley in the middle.
And the valley in the brown down the bottom.
It's recognising the geography that we're in.
So open the door
and our valley just goes nice and small.
And all the joinery lines up.
I do admire the thought that's gone into that.
It's also a bit of a secret entrance
to another bedroom.
Yeah.
Isn't it?
'Cause you're not aware.
It doesn't look like a door at all.
It's very clever.
And there are more neat tricks.
Ones that make this compact space feel big.
A mirrored splashback
pulls those breathtaking vistas
deep into the home.
And how good is the infinity-edge deck
with nature's swimming pool below?
Talk about connection to the elements.
That's one hell of a bed you got there.
That's nothing compared to this bathroom.
What a ripper.
This is no ordinary bathroom.
What is it about this room that's so special?
Pete.
I look out there
while I'm doing my morning ablutions.
I wheel a little bit forward
and I have a shower there.
And I'm looking at the river.
I'm looking at the mountainsides.
Yeah, just nature.
It just looks great.
It sounds like you've been reborn
with a room like this.
Bathrooms are the worst thing
for wheelchair people
because they're always tight and small.
And here, I don't have any problem
with that whatsoever.
This is so based around Trevor's condition.
Does it compromise your use of the house in any way,
having such a tailored house to wheelchair access?
No, no.
It makes the house a lot more free-flowing
because it's open, it's spacious, benefits everyone.
Here, Jeanette has her mountain views,
the privacy she craved,
and most importantly,
the peace of mind that Trevor can live here
in safety and comfort.
No restrictions, no compromises.
Well, congratulations on a remarkable house.
This is no normal build.
Huge effort, enormous effort
given everything that's going on in your lives.
I'm just so impressed.
Thank you, thank you.
We keep pinching ourselves
on just what we've achieved
and, you know, how it's turned out.
For me, being an outsider,
it was an incredible partnership.
I mean, you must be mutually so proud of each other.
Yeah.
I mean, initially,
I only finished work in September last year.
So up until then, Trevor did all the... everything.
And then when Trevor had his surgery,
I had to take over.
And I really had to catch up.
I'm very proud of her.
Very, very proud of the job that she's done.
It's so different to anything else that you build today.
And hence, you know,
it's very hard to get a fixed price
on something like this,
which is so...
You started off at $600,000.
Yeah.
I know where you're going with this.
Where did it end up?
Well, $1.25 million.
It's about double.
Yep.
Wow.
Look, we were kind of realistic initially
that when we started breaking ground
that this was going to cost a little bit more
than what we expected.
Well, you saw how much concrete was going into it.
Yeah, the concrete was the initial...
Okay, so this is going to be significant.
This is not a normal house.
You haven't done it easy.
I mean, this is so... so one-off.
And you've gone for a high-end finish everywhere.
Look, it's all been tailored.
Yep.
We didn't want to compromise on quality and on finish.
So do you think this house has changed your life
and will change your life going forward?
Yes.
Yes, without question.
Without doubt.
No two ways about it.
Love you.
You too.
Jeanette and Trevor
wanted to surround themselves with nature,
with its power to nurture body and soul.
But their underground house
also promises to be a magnet for love and laughter.
And isn't that the best medicine?
For Trevor, dreaming big has never been a problem.
Whether it's flying ultralights or building an earth house,
he's been fearless,
persevering with confidence and remarkable determination,
with, of course, the substantial help from wingwoman Jeanette.
Best of all, and despite their massive challenges,
it's been worth it in the end.
Trevor went in search of freedom,
and here he's finally found it.
